Chapter 9 The Return to the Palace

Chapter 9
The Return to the Palace
The royal palace had not changed.
At least...
That was what everyone believed.
From the outside, it remained a masterpiece of white marble and golden towers.
The same enormous gates.
The same gardens.
The same statues of former kings standing proudly beneath the sky.
But Alexander knew better.
Beautiful places could hide the darkest secrets.
And this palace...
Had been built on silence.
The Sterling convoy moved through the empty road leading toward the palace.
No reporters.
No guards.
No welcoming ceremony.
Only darkness.
The government had been informed that Alexander was returning, but no official response had been made.
That alone told him everything.
Someone powerful was still controlling the system.
Inside the vehicle...
Eleanor sat beside Alexander.
For the first time in twenty-six years...
She was returning home.
But instead of happiness...
There was sadness in her eyes.
Alexander noticed.
"You don't have to do this."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"Go back."
"You can stay hidden."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
"I spent twenty-six years hiding."
She looked out the window.
"I don't want my daughter to spend her life running."
Alexander nodded.
"She won't."
His voice became firm.
"I promise."
Across from them, Father Benedict held the old royal journal.
His fingers trembled.
"There is something you need to know before we enter."
Alexander looked at him.
"What?"
The priest opened the journal to the final pages.
"The first King Sterling wrote a warning."
"What warning?"
Father Benedict read:
The greatest danger to a kingdom does not come from enemies outside the walls.
It comes from those who know every door inside.
Alexander was silent.
The words felt painfully familiar.
Michael.
The guards.
The advisors.
Everyone who had access.
The Palace Gates
The convoy stopped.
The massive iron gates slowly opened.
Alexander expected resistance.
Instead...
Nothing.
The palace was completely abandoned.
No guards.
No servants.
No officials.
Only cold hallways and empty rooms.
"This is wrong," Michael's replacement, Daniel, whispered.
Alexander looked around.
"They wanted us to come inside."
They entered the grand throne room.
The same room where kings had been crowned for generations.
The same room where Princess Eleanor had stood before disappearing.
Alexander stopped.
A memory returned.
He was ten years old.
Hiding behind a curtain.
Watching Eleanor argue with several advisors.
One voice had shouted:
"You don't understand what you've discovered!"
Another answered:
"If she reveals the documents, everything collapses."
Then...
A scream.
A crash.
And silence.
"Alexander."
Eleanor's voice pulled him back.
She was staring at the throne.
Something was wrong.
"What is it?"
She walked closer.
"That symbol."
Alexander followed her gaze.
Carved into the base of the throne was a small mark.
A black crown.
Not the royal crest.
The symbol of the Order.
"They were here."
Eleanor whispered.
"Long before we knew."
The Hidden Room
The journal contained another clue.
The golden key.
The hairpin.
And a phrase:
When the crown loses its shadow, the first king will speak again.
Alexander searched the throne room.
Nothing.
The walls.
Nothing.
The floor.
Nothing.
Then Lily's words returned.
"The bell guards the door."
But there was no bell here.
Unless...
Alexander looked upward.
The palace ceiling.
Above the throne was an enormous golden bell decoration.
Not decoration.
A mechanism.
He climbed onto the throne platform.
Pressed the center.
Click.
The entire wall behind the throne shifted.
A hidden passage opened.
Everyone froze.
Father Benedict whispered:
"The first king's chamber."
The Chamber Beneath the Palace
Unlike the White Tower chamber...
This room was untouched.
No dust.
No decay.
Everything had been preserved.
At the center stood a stone table.
On it:
A book.
A crown.
And a sealed envelope.
Alexander approached slowly.
The envelope carried one name.
To the Last Guardian.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Eleanor.
Not from the first king.
From Alexander's grandfather.
The former King Sterling.
The letter began:
Alexander,
If you are reading this, then the family has failed to protect the truth.
His hands tightened.
The letter continued.
I knew the betrayal was coming.
I knew someone inside the palace had joined the Black Crown.
But I did not know who.
Alexander frowned.
His grandfather knew?
Then why did he do nothing?
The next line answered.
Because the traitor was someone I loved.
A terrible realization formed.
The old king had not been powerless.
He had been protecting someone.
The letter continued:
Eleanor discovered the existence of the Guardian Trust.
She also discovered that the Order had been manipulating both families for centuries.
When she tried to expose them...
They gave me a choice.
Alexander stopped reading.
A choice?
Save the kingdom.
Or save my daughter.
His vision blurred.
His grandfather had been forced to choose.
And he chose Eleanor.
He created the fake death.
The false accident.
The disappearance.
Everything.
Then came the final sentence:
But I failed to protect the child.
Alexander looked up.
"Amelia."
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"No..."
Suddenly...
The hidden chamber lights turned on.
A projector activated.
A figure appeared on the wall.
Michael.
Alive.
Smiling.
"I knew you'd find it."
Alexander immediately turned.
"Where is Lily?"
Michael laughed.
"You still call her Lily."
The screen changed.
The little girl appeared.
But she wasn't alone.
Standing behind her...
Was an elderly woman.
Alexander recognized her instantly.
Victoria Ashcroft's mother.
Former royal advisor.
A woman believed dead fifteen years earlier.
Eleanor stepped closer.
"No..."
The woman smiled.
"Hello, Princess."
Her voice was calm.
"You should have stayed buried."
Alexander stared at the screen.
"Who are you?"
The woman answered:
"The last person your grandfather trusted."
A pause.
"And the first person who betrayed him."
She leaned closer to the camera.
"The truth you've spent your entire life searching for..."
"You are finally ready to hear it."
The screen flickered.
A document appeared.
A birth certificate.
Alexander looked at the name.
His blood turned cold.
Because it wasn't Amelia's.
It wasn't Eleanor's.
It was his.
Alexander Sterling.
Birth Record Altered.
Original Identity: Unknown.
The room became silent.
Eleanor looked at him in shock.
"Alexander..."
The woman smiled.
"Your entire life..."
"Was built on a lie."
The screen went black.
And for the first time...
Alexander wondered if he had been searching for the truth...
May you like
Or if the truth had been searching for him.
