Chapter 7 The General's Confession

Chapter 7

The General's Confession

Victor Hawthorne's slow applause echoed through the underground chamber.

The sound lingered against the ancient stone walls long after his hands became still.

Alexander instinctively stepped in front of Eleanor.

The old general smiled.

"Still protecting her."

"Just like your grandfather."

Alexander's voice was cold.

"You imprisoned her."

Victor shrugged.

"I kept her alive."

"Those are two very different things."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"No, Victor."

"They became the same thing years ago."

The Twelfth Hairpin

Victor reached into his pocket and held up the final silver hairpin.

Unlike the others, it gleamed flawlessly.

No scratches.

No signs of age.

"I've protected this for twenty-six years."

Alexander stared at it.

"It belongs to Amelia."

Victor chuckled.

"It belongs to history."

He gently twisted the top of the hairpin.

Click.

The silver ornament separated into two pieces.

Hidden inside was something Alexander had never expected.

A tiny golden key.

Barely longer than a thumbnail.

Eleanor whispered,

"I knew..."

"So the legend was true."

Alexander looked between them.

"What key?"

Victor smiled.

"The last piece."

A Secret Older Than the Crown

Victor walked toward the ancient fireplace.

Above it hung a faded tapestry depicting the first Sterling monarch.

He pointed to it.

"Your family has spent centuries believing they ruled because of blood."

He laughed softly.

"They ruled because of a promise."

Alexander remained silent.

Victor continued.

"Four hundred years ago, the first King Sterling hid something beneath this abbey."

"A treaty."

"A treasure?"

Victor shook his head.

"Far more dangerous."

He looked directly at Alexander.

"Evidence."

Alexander frowned.

"Evidence of what?"

Victor's expression grew serious.

"That your royal bloodline..."

"...was never meant to inherit the throne."

Silence filled the chamber.

Alexander stared at him.

"You're lying."

Victor calmly reached into a nearby cabinet.

He removed a weathered leather journal.

"This was written by Archbishop William Ashford."

"The man who crowned the first Sterling king."

Alexander accepted it cautiously.

Inside were handwritten entries nearly impossible to read.

One page had been marked with a ribbon.

He read aloud.

The child born tonight carries no royal blood.

His heartbeat quickened.

Yet to preserve peace, he shall become king.

Alexander slowly lowered the journal.

"No..."

Victor nodded.

"The Sterling dynasty began with an adopted child."

"The real royal family disappeared."

"The truth was buried."

Eleanor Speaks

Alexander turned toward Eleanor.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"For years."

"When?"

"The night I escaped."

Alexander felt betrayed.

"You never told anyone?"

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

Tears welled in her eyes.

"Because that wasn't the secret people were killing for."

Alexander frowned.

"Then what was?"

Eleanor looked at the golden key.

"That key doesn't unlock treasure."

"It unlocks proof."

"Proof of the true royal bloodline."

The Impossible Truth

Victor sighed.

"You still don't understand."

He slowly approached Alexander.

"Look at the little girl."

Alexander's heart skipped.

"What about Amelia?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"She isn't merely Eleanor's daughter."

"She's the last living descendant..."

"...of the original royal family."

The room fell utterly silent.

Alexander looked at Eleanor.

She couldn't meet his eyes.

"It wasn't supposed to happen," she whispered.

"I fell in love."

Alexander frowned.

"With who?"

Eleanor's voice trembled.

"A man whose family had protected the original bloodline for centuries."

Victor nodded.

"They kept themselves hidden."

"They married outside nobility."

"They disappeared into ordinary life."

"But fate has an odd sense of humor."

He looked toward the stairs, as if he could somehow see Amelia waiting far above.

"The two bloodlines reunited."

"In one child."

A Gun in the Darkness

Alexander suddenly drew the pistol Michael had insisted he carry.

He pointed it directly at Victor.

"Enough."

"You murdered innocent people."

Victor didn't flinch.

"Did I?"

"You ordered the attack on Thomas Reed."

"I ordered silence."

"You poisoned him."

Victor's expression darkened.

"I arrived too late."

Alexander hesitated.

"What?"

"The poison wasn't mine."

Silence.

Victor slowly reached into his coat and tossed a small evidence bag onto the table.

Inside was a broken glass vial.

Military markings.

But not Hawthorne's.

A different insignia.

Alexander had never seen it before.

Victor spoke quietly.

"There are others."

"I wasn't the only one searching."

The Hidden Enemy

Victor walked toward an old map pinned to the wall.

Dozens of names had been crossed out in red ink.

Some were familiar.

Royal advisors.

Judges.

Business leaders.

Even senators.

"They've spent thirty years hunting Eleanor."

Alexander studied the map.

"Who are they?"

Victor answered with a single sentence.

"The Order of the Black Crown."

Father Benedict had never mentioned such a group.

Neither had Thomas Reed.

Victor noticed Alexander's confusion.

"Because almost nobody survives long enough to learn their name."

He tapped the map.

"They infiltrated governments."

"Corporations."

"The military."

"And..."

He paused.

"...your own family."

Michael Arrives

A faint click echoed from the staircase.

Victor smiled.

"Your security team finally ignored your orders."

Michael rushed into the chamber with six armed Sterling guards.

They immediately surrounded Victor.

Weapons raised.

"It's over," Michael declared.

Victor laughed.

"No."

He slowly lifted both hands.

"I've been waiting for you."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

Victor looked toward Alexander.

"Ask him."

Alexander turned.

"Ask him what?"

Victor's voice became almost sympathetic.

"Where he was..."

"...the night Thomas Reed died."

Silence.

Alexander looked at Michael.

Michael's expression remained calm.

"I was securing the perimeter."

Victor smiled.

"Were you?"

He pressed a small button hidden inside his watch.

Instantly...

Every monitor in the chamber flickered to life.

Security footage appeared.

Date.

Time.

The morning Thomas Reed had been poisoned.

A man wearing a hood entered the cottage carrying breakfast.

The hood slipped for less than a second.

Alexander's blood turned to ice.

The face on the screen...

Was Michael.

The man Alexander had trusted for fifteen years.

Michael slowly lowered his weapon.

His calm expression vanished.

In its place appeared something far colder.

He smiled.

"You should've stayed out of this, Alexander."

Every Sterling guard turned toward him in shock.

Michael calmly aimed his pistol...

Not at Victor.

But at Eleanor.

May you like

The betrayal had been inside Alexander's own circle all along.
