CHAPTER 2: THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING The massive screen above the fireplace flickered. For a moment, nobody moved. The guests who had arrived expecting a luxurious evening of champagne and meaningless conversations now stood frozen, watching a family collapse in real time. Victoria Vale stared at the screen. The confidence she had carried only minutes earlier had disappeared. Because she knew. Whatever was on that footage, it was something she could not explain away. Adrian remained standing in the center of the hall. His expression was unreadable. That was what frightened people most about him. When Adrian Vale was angry, he did not break things. He did not scream. He did not make empty threats. He simply made decisions. And once Adrian made a decision, there was no turning back. The security footage began. The video showed the hallway outside the servants' area. The timestamp appeared in the corner. Three weeks earlier. Clara was walking slowly, carrying a small box of medical supplies. She looked exhausted. Her pregnancy was beginning to show, though she had tried to hide it beneath loose clothing. Then Victoria appeared. The entire room watched. Even the guests who had defended Victoria earlier looked uncomfortable. On the screen, Victoria stepped directly in front of Clara. The audio was clear. "You really thought you could hide this forever?" Clara stopped. "I don't know what you're talking about." Victoria smiled. That same cold smile everyone had seen tonight. "The baby." The hall became silent. Clara on the screen looked terrified. "Please..." Victoria moved closer. "Do you have any idea what people will say when they find out?" Clara lowered her eyes. "I never wanted to hurt anyone." "That is the problem," Victoria replied. "You think this is about what you want." The real Clara standing in the hall closed her eyes. She had heard those words before. Many times. Adrian watched the footage without blinking. Victoria noticed. She stepped forward. "Adrian, stop this." He did not look at her. "Continue." The footage continued. Victoria walked around Clara slowly. "You work in my house." Clara said nothing. "You eat because of my generosity." The words caused several guests to look away. "Do you understand what happens when people like you forget their position?" Clara's voice trembled. "I am not trying to take anything from you." Victoria laughed. "Not yet." The video showed Victoria reaching toward Clara's stomach. The entire room reacted. Some guests gasped. Adrian's eyes changed. For the first time that night, the calm mask cracked. He stepped closer to the screen. "Pause." The assistant immediately stopped the footage. The frozen image showed Victoria standing inches away from Clara. Her hand near the unborn child. Adrian looked at his wife. "What were you doing?" Victoria quickly answered. "I was just talking to her." "That is not what I asked." His voice became colder. "What were you doing?" Victoria opened her mouth. No words came. Because everyone had seen it. The fear. The threat. The way Clara had protected her stomach. Adrian turned back. "Continue." The video resumed. Victoria's voice echoed through the hall. "You need to leave this house before Adrian finds out." Clara shook her head. "I can't." "And why not?" "Because Mr. Vale deserves to know the truth." Victoria's face hardened. Then came the sentence that made everyone freeze. "You don't understand how this family works." Victoria leaned closer. "People like you don't become part of the Vale family." A pause. "People like you disappear." The video stopped. No one spoke. The silence was unbearable. Adrian slowly turned toward his wife. "Disappear?" Victoria immediately stepped forward. "That is not what I meant." "Then explain." "I was angry." "Explain." "I didn't mean anything by it." Adrian stared at her. "You threatened the mother of my child." Victoria's eyes filled with anger. "You are acting like she is innocent." Clara looked shocked. Adrian turned. "Why wouldn't she be?" Victoria laughed bitterly. "Because you don't know everything." The room shifted. Adrian narrowed his eyes. "What does that mean?" Victoria looked around. She realized she had lost control of the story. So she reached for the only weapon she had left. Doubt. "Ask her." Everyone looked at Clara. Clara immediately became nervous. Adrian noticed. "Clara?" She looked at him. "I..." Her voice disappeared. Victoria smiled slightly. "There it is." Adrian looked at his wife. "Enough." "No." Victoria shook her head. "You want the truth? Fine." She pointed toward Clara. "Ask her how she really met you." Adrian's expression changed. Because there was something in Victoria's voice. Something different. Not anger. Confidence. Like she had been waiting for this moment. "Clara," Adrian said quietly. "How did we meet?" The room waited. Clara looked down. Her hands tightened around Adrian's coat. "I was working at the hospital." Adrian nodded. "I know." Victoria interrupted. "But you don't know everything." Adrian looked at her. "Go on." Victoria took a breath. "She didn't just happen to be there." Clara's face became pale. "Victoria..." "No." Victoria smiled. "You wanted everyone to know the truth." She looked around the room. "So let them hear it." Adrian's eyes remained fixed on Clara. "Is there something you haven't told me?" Clara's eyes filled with tears. "I was going to tell you." "When?" She looked away. "I don't know." The answer hurt. Not because of betrayal. Because Adrian realized she had been carrying fear alone. Victoria stepped closer. "Tell him who you really are." Clara remained silent. "Tell him your real name." The room froze. Adrian frowned. "What?" Clara closed her eyes. A painful silence followed. Then she whispered: "My name is not Clara Bennett." The guests exchanged confused looks. Adrian stared. "What is your name?" She looked up. And for the first time, Adrian saw something he had never seen before. Not fear. Shame. "My name is Clara Whitmore." The name hit the room like a thunderclap. Several guests gasped. Because everyone in that room knew one thing. The Whitmore family. A powerful family. A family that had been enemies with the Vales for nearly twenty years. Adrian stepped back slightly. "You are a Whitmore?" Clara nodded. "I was." Victoria smiled. Now she believed she had won. "Interesting, isn't it?" She looked at Adrian. "The woman you brought into this house belongs to the family that destroyed yours." The mansion fell silent again. Adrian looked at Clara. The woman carrying his child. The woman he thought he knew. And suddenly, a new question appeared. Not why had Victoria hurt her. But why had Clara hidden her identity? And what was the real reason a Whitmore woman had entered the Vale mansion? Outside, thunder rolled over the city. Inside, the secret buried for years had finally surfaced. But nobody knew that Clara's hidden identity was only the first piece of a much bigger truth. A truth that would reveal who had really been manipulating the Vale family from the beginning. END OF CHAPTER 2 / Chapter 10 / 14

CHAPTER 11: THE GRANDFATHER'S CONFESSION

CHAPTER 11: THE GRANDFATHER'S CONFESSION

The mansion doors opened.

Slowly.

Almost peacefully.

As if the person entering was not a man who had been declared dead for thirty years.

As if he was simply returning home after a long trip.

Charles Vale stepped inside.

The elderly man leaned on his cane, his silver hair perfectly arranged, his expression calm.

Too calm.

Everyone in the room was frozen.

Adrian stared at him.

His entire understanding of his family had collapsed so many times that he no longer knew what to believe.

First, his uncle returned from the dead.

Then a hidden brother appeared.

Then his father spoke from somewhere unknown.

And now...

His grandfather.

A man who belonged only in old photographs.

"How?"

That was the only word Adrian could say.

Charles looked at him.

"I know."

He smiled faintly.

"You have many questions."

Adrian stepped forward.

"You are dead."

Charles nodded.

"That was necessary."

"Necessary?"

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Do you have any idea what your disappearance did to this family?"

Charles looked around.

At Eleanor.

At Richard.

At Lucas.

Then finally at Adrian.

"Yes."

A pause.

"That was the point."

The answer shocked everyone.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Charles, stop."

The old man looked at her.

"You still protect them."

His eyes moved toward Adrian.

"Even after all these years."

Adrian felt a strange anger rising.

Not the explosive kind.

Something heavier.

"Explain."

Charles sat down in one of the old chairs.

Almost like he had been waiting for this moment his entire life.

"Your family believes the story began with your father."

He looked at Adrian.

"It did not."

He tapped his cane lightly against the floor.

"It began with me."

The room became silent.

"I built the Vale empire."

Charles continued.

"But I made mistakes."

Adrian crossed his arms.

"What mistakes?"

Charles looked toward the family portraits.

"I believed power was the only thing that mattered."

A bitter smile appeared.

"I thought fear was stronger than loyalty."

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Because he knew exactly what Charles meant.

"You taught your children that."

Charles nodded.

"Yes."

"And they became like you."

The old man's expression changed.

For the first time, regret appeared.

"That is why I disappeared."

Adrian frowned.

"To escape responsibility?"

"No."

Charles looked directly at him.

"To see what would happen when nobody controlled them."

Adrian almost laughed.

"You abandoned your family as an experiment?"

Charles did not deny it.

"I wanted to know if the Vale name could survive without me."

"And?"

Charles looked down.

"It became worse."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew it was true.

Charles turned toward Richard.

"You wanted power."

Richard looked away.

"Your father wanted justice."

His eyes moved to Eleanor.

"You wanted to protect the family image."

Eleanor lowered her head.

"And Adrian?"

The old man looked at him.

"You were the only one who still believed family meant something."

The words surprised Adrian.

But he refused to show it.

"Why come back now?"

Charles became serious.

"Because the person who destroyed this family is still free."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You said it started with you."

"Yes."

"Then explain."

Charles leaned forward.

"When I built this empire, I made enemies."

"Who?"

"Many people."

He looked at Clara.

"Some of them became friends."

Clara understood.

"William Whitmore."

Charles nodded.

"William was one of the few honest men I knew."

Adrian looked surprised.

Charles continued.

"I trusted him."

"Then why did everyone think he betrayed us?"

"Because someone needed a target."

The room became still.

"Who?"

Charles looked at Richard.

Richard immediately shook his head.

"Don't."

Charles ignored him.

"The person who manipulated everything..."

A pause.

"Was your grandmother."

Silence.

Adrian stared.

"My grandmother?"

Charles nodded.

"Your grandmother, Helena Vale."

Adrian frowned.

"She died before my father."

"Yes."

"Then how?"

Charles looked at him.

"Because she didn't die naturally."

Everyone froze.

Eleanor whispered:

"What?"

Charles continued.

"Helena discovered that I wanted to dismantle the corrupt parts of the company."

He sighed.

"She believed the Vale family should control everything."

Adrian slowly understood.

"The person behind all this..."

Charles nodded.

"Was someone who believed power mattered more than people."

Lucas looked shocked.

"She manipulated everyone?"

"Yes."

Charles looked at Richard.

"She used your ambition."

Richard looked down.

"She promised you the company."

Then Eleanor.

"She used your fear of scandal."

Then Adrian.

"She used your father's love for you."

The room became silent.

Adrian felt something break inside.

His father.

His mother.

His uncle.

His grandfather.

Everyone had been trapped in the same game.

A game created generations ago.

Then Charles looked at Clara.

"And she was afraid of the Whitmores."

Clara frowned.

"Why?"

"Because William discovered the truth."

Adrian looked at Clara.

Charles continued:

"Before William died, he gave Alexander evidence."

"Evidence of Helena?"

Charles nodded.

"But Alexander never had time to reveal it."

Adrian looked toward the old desk.

"The box."

"Yes."

Charles leaned back.

"The box contained proof."

"Then why steal it?"

Everyone turned.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Charles smiled sadly.

"Because someone else already knew it existed."

A sudden noise came from upstairs.

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

A door slammed.

Adrian immediately became alert.

"Who else is here?"

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from the second floor.

A woman's voice.

Cold.

Familiar.

Everyone froze.

"Interesting."

The voice echoed through the mansion.

"You finally discovered the truth."

Adrian looked upward.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the voice.

The voice belonged to someone who should have been impossible.

Someone who had been dead for decades.

Charles slowly stood.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"No."

The footsteps moved down the staircase.

Slowly.

A woman appeared.

Elegant.

Older.

But unmistakable.

Adrian stared.

"That's impossible."

The woman smiled.

"Hello, Charles."

The old man gripped his cane.

"Helena."

The mansion fell silent.

Because the woman who was supposed to have died...

Was standing in front of them.

Alive.

May you like

And smiling.
