Chapter 2: The First Crack in the Mask Julian stood motionless in the security office long after the call had ended. The screen still displayed the grainy reflection from the gate camera. Bianca's silhouette was distorted by the mansion's glass, but one detail remained unmistakable. Her foot. Pressing down. Not helping. Not hesitating. Pressing. The anonymous caller's words echoed inside his mind. "If you want your mother to survive... stop looking at Bianca." It wasn't a threat made in panic. It was a warning from someone who knew exactly what was happening. Julian saved the footage onto three encrypted flash drives. One he slipped into his wallet. One he locked inside the office safe. The third he hid beneath the false bottom of a wooden cigar box that had belonged to his late father. He trusted almost no one anymore. Tonight had destroyed that luxury. Twenty minutes later. St. Augustine Medical Center. The emergency department buzzed with controlled urgency. Doctors moved briskly between rooms while nurses adjusted IV lines and whispered updates into headsets. Julian sat outside Intensive Care Unit Three. His suit was still soaked from the pool. No one had offered him dry clothes. No one dared interrupt him. Finally, the ICU doors opened. A gray-haired physician stepped into the hallway. "Mr. Hale?" Julian rose immediately. "How is she?" The doctor removed his glasses. "She's stable." Julian finally released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "But..." The doctor continued. "She was fortunate." "Another two or three minutes underwater..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. Julian nodded silently. "Can I see her?" "For only a few minutes." Martha looked impossibly small beneath the hospital blankets. Machines surrounded her bed. A heart monitor beeped steadily beside her. An oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose. She opened her eyes as Julian entered. "My boy..." Her voice was barely audible. Julian sat beside her. "You scared me." A weak smile crossed her face. "I suppose..." "I've always been dramatic." For a brief moment, they both laughed. Then the laughter faded. Martha's eyes filled with fear. "You heard her." Julian nodded once. "I heard everything." Tears slipped down her cheeks. "I kept trying to tell you." "I know." "I thought I was losing my mind." "You weren't." "She made me believe I was." Julian reached for her hand. "I know." Martha looked toward the closed hospital door before whispering, "She wasn't alone." Julian stiffened. "What do you mean?" "I heard voices." "When?" "Three nights ago." She closed her eyes, searching her memory. "I woke up." "They thought I was asleep." "There was a man." Julian leaned closer. "Did you recognize his voice?" "No." "But..." She frowned. "He called her..." She struggled to remember. "...Number Seven." Julian blinked. "Number Seven?" Martha nodded weakly. "That's what he said." "'Seven... everything is almost finished.'" Julian's pulse quickened. Why would someone call Bianca by a number instead of her name? It sounded less like affection... ...and more like a code. Across town. A black Mercedes stopped beneath an abandoned warehouse. Bianca stepped out. Her elegant evening dress had been replaced by black slacks and a dark coat. She walked inside without hesitation. The warehouse appeared empty. Until a steel door opened. Beyond it lay something unexpected. A luxury office. Hidden beneath the warehouse floor. Several people sat around a long table. Men. Women. Different ages. Different nationalities. None of them spoke. At the head of the table sat an elderly man with silver hair. His tailored charcoal suit fit perfectly. His eyes were calm. Almost lifeless. "You failed." His voice remained soft. Bianca lowered her head. "I underestimated him." "You underestimated his timing." She said nothing. The old man pressed a button. A projector illuminated the wall. Images appeared. Julian. Martha. The Hale mansion. Bank records. Corporate ownership charts. Even Julian's travel schedule. Every detail. Every movement. Someone had been watching the Hale family for years. The old man folded his hands. "We invested twenty-three months placing you into Julian Hale's life." "We financed your charities." "We built your public reputation." "We removed obstacles." "And tonight..." His eyes hardened. "...you nearly destroyed everything." Bianca kept her expression controlled. "He wasn't supposed to return until tomorrow." "Yet he did." Silence. Then the old man spoke again. "Emotion." Bianca looked confused. "What?" "You became emotional." "You enjoyed watching the old woman suffer." "That was unnecessary." She lowered her eyes. He was right. For the first time in years... She had allowed hatred to interfere with discipline. A dangerous mistake. One that their organization never tolerated. The old man slid a thin folder across the table. "Your replacement." Bianca looked inside. Her breathing stopped. A photograph. A young woman. Beautiful. Elegant. Smiling beside Julian during a charity gala five years earlier. "Who is she?" "Olivia Bennett." "Financial attorney." "Harvard graduate." "Single." "She'll approach Julian if you fail." Bianca slowly closed the folder. "I won't fail." "You already have." Meanwhile... Julian sat inside the hospital cafeteria, replaying the evening over and over. Nothing fit anymore. Bianca. Number Seven. The anonymous call. Disabled cameras. The reflection. His mother wasn't imagining things. Someone had orchestrated every piece. His phone vibrated again. This time it was Detective Aaron Brooks. A longtime family friend. They had known each other since college. Julian answered. "Aaron." "I heard about your mother." Julian frowned. "I haven't told anyone." "You didn't." "The hospital called local police because it may involve attempted homicide." Julian looked around the empty cafeteria. "Can you meet?" "I'm already downstairs." Five minutes later. Aaron entered carrying two coffees. He wore plain clothes instead of a uniform. His expression immediately darkened after seeing Julian. "You look terrible." "I've had better evenings." Aaron handed him a coffee. "So." "What happened?" Julian considered lying. Then decided against it. He trusted Aaron. Or at least... He wanted to. He explained everything. From entering the mansion... To Bianca's confession... To the anonymous phone call. Aaron listened without interrupting. When Julian finished... The detective remained silent for nearly a minute. Finally he spoke. "If everything you heard is accurate..." "It is." "...then Bianca isn't acting alone." "I know." Aaron leaned back. "But here's the problem." "What?" "If we arrest her tonight..." "She walks." Julian's jaw tightened. "The recording isn't enough." "The reflection?" "Too blurry." "The confession?" "No recording." "Martha's testimony?" "The defense attacks her age." Julian slammed his fist lightly against the table. "So we do nothing?" Aaron shook his head. "No." "We investigate quietly." "No warrants." "No arrests." "No leaks." "If she belongs to something larger..." "I want the entire network." Julian nodded slowly. It made sense. Emotion wanted immediate justice. Evidence demanded patience. Aaron suddenly looked uncomfortable. "There's something else." Julian noticed the change immediately. "What?" Aaron slid a sealed evidence envelope across the table. "It arrived anonymously at the station this morning." Julian opened it. Inside was a single photograph. His heart stopped. The picture showed his father. Richard Hale. Standing beside... The same silver-haired man from the warehouse. Both men were smiling. The photograph had been taken nearly twenty-five years earlier. On the back, someone had written four words. HE NEVER TOLD YOU. Julian stared at the handwriting. His father had died believing his family was safe. Or had he? Aaron spoke quietly. "I checked the photo." "It's authentic." Julian looked up slowly. "My father knew them." Aaron nodded. "It appears so." Julian's world shifted once again. Everything he believed began collapsing. Maybe this wasn't a crime that started six months ago. Maybe it hadn't started with Bianca. Maybe... It had begun decades before his father ever died. As Julian slipped the photograph back into the envelope, neither man noticed the young nurse standing outside the cafeteria. She appeared to be checking patient charts. In reality... A tiny wireless earpiece rested beneath her hair. She whispered only six words. "Target has seen the photograph." Then she walked away without looking back. End of Chapter 2 / Chapter 7 / 14

Chapter 8: Face to Face with Number Eight

Chapter 8: Face to Face with Number Eight

The darkness swallowed everything.

Only the flashing red emergency lights, fading in and out every few seconds, revealed fragments of the warehouse.

A table.

A concrete pillar.

Aaron's silhouette.

Julian tightened his grip on the pistol.

His palms were damp.

Across the room, the calm voice returned.

"Put the weapon down."

"You won't use it."

Julian didn't answer.

The voice sounded strangely... familiar.

Not because he recognized the man.

Because it carried the confidence of someone who already knew him.

Aaron whispered,

"Stay behind me."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

"They're here for me."

The warehouse lights suddenly flickered back on.

Standing twenty feet away was a single man.

Perfectly dressed.

Gray suit.

Black gloves.

No visible weapon.

His posture was relaxed, almost casual.

This was not how hired killers behaved.

His eyes settled on Julian.

"So."

"Richard's son."

Julian raised the pistol.

"Don't come any closer."

Number Eight smiled politely.

"I told the Director you'd say that."

"You know my father?"

"I knew him better than you did."

Julian's finger tightened on the trigger.

Aaron slowly moved sideways, searching for an angle.

Number Eight noticed immediately.

"Detective Brooks."

He nodded respectfully.

"Your father was a difficult man."

Aaron's eyes narrowed.

"You knew him too?"

"I attended his funeral."

Julian and Aaron exchanged a glance.

Neither had ever seen this man before.

Number Eight continued,

"You simply didn't know where to look."

Outside, the gunfire had stopped.

No more attackers entered.

No reinforcements.

Only silence.

Aaron frowned.

"Where's your team?"

"They've completed their assignment."

"What assignment?"

Number Eight smiled.

"Keeping everyone else away."

Julian looked toward the security monitor.

Police cars had been blocked several streets away.

Road construction vehicles.

Accidents.

Fires.

Every route toward the warehouse had somehow become inaccessible.

The Circle hadn't come to kill him.

They had come to talk.

Number Eight slowly removed his gloves.

His hands were covered in old scars.

Burns.

Knife wounds.

Bullet marks.

A lifetime of violence.

Yet his voice remained calm.

"I wasn't sent to execute you."

Julian lowered the pistol slightly.

"Then why are you here?"

"To ask you a question."

"What question?"

Number Eight tilted his head.

"How much of your father's story have you heard?"

Julian answered honestly.

"Not enough."

"Good."

"Because half of it is a lie."

Aaron stepped forward.

"Richard Hale recorded everything."

"No."

Number Eight corrected him.

"He recorded what he wanted Julian to believe."

Julian's heartbeat quickened.

"My father lied?"

"He protected you."

"There's a difference."

Number Eight reached into his jacket.

Aaron instantly raised his weapon.

"Slowly."

The man nodded.

He removed...

A photograph.

Nothing more.

He slid it across the floor.

It stopped at Julian's feet.

Julian picked it up.

His blood froze.

The picture showed Richard Hale.

Martha.

A little boy.

Julian.

A little girl.

About four years old.

Standing beside them.

All smiling together.

Julian stared in disbelief.

He had never seen the girl before.

Yet she stood in the center of the family.

As though she belonged there.

On the back, Richard had written:

Summer 2002.

Julian whispered,

"This is impossible."

Number Eight spoke quietly.

"You don't remember her."

"You were too young."

Julian looked up.

"Who is she?"

The answer came without hesitation.

"Bianca."

The room fell silent.

Julian laughed once.

Not from humor.

From disbelief.

"No."

"That's ridiculous."

"I never met Bianca until two years ago."

Number Eight's expression never changed.

"That's what you were taught."

Aaron examined the photograph carefully.

"It hasn't been altered."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

"My mother would've told me."

Number Eight looked directly into Julian's eyes.

"Would she?"

Those two words landed like stones.

Would she?

Martha had always avoided discussing the years after Richard's death.

Family photo albums contained strange gaps.

Entire summers missing.

Vacations never mentioned.

Julian had assumed the grief made those memories painful.

Now...

He wasn't sure.

Number Eight continued.

"Bianca wasn't sent into your life two years ago."

"She was taken out of it twenty-four years ago."

Julian's breathing became uneven.

"What are you talking about?"

"The Circle attempted to recruit Richard Hale."

"He refused."

"They couldn't kill him."

"So they punished him."

Julian stared silently.

"They took someone."

"Someone he loved."

The warehouse seemed to grow colder.

Number Eight pointed at the photograph.

"They took her."

Julian looked again.

The little girl's smile.

The way Martha held her hand.

The resemblance...

Not obvious.

But now that he looked closely...

The child's eyes...

Were Bianca's.

Aaron spoke carefully.

"If that's true..."

"Why doesn't Julian remember?"

Number Eight answered immediately.

"Trauma."

"And medication."

Julian looked sharply at him.

"What medication?"

"After the kidnapping..."

"You stopped speaking."

"For almost eight months."

"Doctors treated you."

"The Circle encouraged those treatments."

"They wanted the memory buried."

Julian staggered backward until he hit the concrete wall.

Every instinct screamed that this couldn't be true.

Yet...

Fragments.

Tiny fragments.

A little girl laughing in a garden.

A swing.

A red balloon.

Someone calling his name.

Images he'd dismissed as dreams for years.

They suddenly felt...

Real.

A loud ringtone shattered the silence.

Number Eight answered his phone.

He listened for several seconds.

Then sighed.

"The Director changed his mind."

Julian immediately raised the pistol again.

"What does that mean?"

"It means our conversation is over."

Aaron stepped beside Julian.

"You'll have to go through us."

Number Eight looked almost disappointed.

"I hoped you wouldn't say that."

He slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Then...

Without warning...

Every light inside the warehouse exploded.

Glass rained from the ceiling.

The room plunged into darkness once more.

Flashbang.

Julian instinctively shut his eyes.

His ears rang violently.

Someone grabbed his arm.

Aaron shouted,

"Move!"

Gunfire erupted.

Not one weapon.

Many.

Julian stumbled through the darkness.

Someone crashed into him.

He swung instinctively.

A body fell.

More shouting.

Then...

Silence.

The emergency lights slowly returned.

Smoke drifted through the warehouse.

Bodies lay scattered across the concrete floor.

Most wore black tactical gear bearing the Circle's emblem.

But Number Eight...

Was gone.

Only one object remained where he had been standing.

A leather notebook.

Julian picked it up carefully.

Inside the cover, written in neat handwriting, were four words:

Property of Daniel Hale.

Julian stopped breathing.

Hale.

Not Brooks.

Not Laurent.

Hale.

He slowly looked toward Aaron.

"Aaron..."

His voice barely emerged.

"My father only had one brother."

Aaron nodded slowly.

"I know."

Julian's hands trembled.

"My uncle..."

Aaron closed his eyes.

"...was declared dead thirty years ago."

Julian looked back at the notebook.

Then toward the shattered doorway where Number Eight had disappeared.

The impossible truth settled over him.

Number Eight wasn't a stranger.

He was Daniel Hale.

Richard Hale's younger brother.

Julian's uncle.

The man his family had mourned decades earlier.

The man who had somehow returned...

May you like

Working for the very organization that had destroyed their lives.
