Chapter 11: The Woman Above the Director

Chapter 11: The Woman Above the Director
The bridge fell into complete silence.
Even the wind seemed to hesitate.
Victor pressed a hand against his bleeding shoulder but made no attempt to flee. Around him, the Circle's operatives lowered their weapons.
Not out of fear.
Out of obedience.
To Eleanor Ashcroft.
She walked with the calm confidence of someone who had never needed to raise her voice to be obeyed.
Every step echoed across the empty bridge.
She stopped five feet from Julian.
For several seconds, she simply looked at him.
Studying him.
Almost... fondly.
"So much of Richard in your eyes," she said softly.
Julian didn't answer.
His thoughts were still racing.
Victor.
His supposed father.
The DNA envelope.
His mother.
Nothing felt solid anymore.
Eleanor turned toward Victor.
"You disappointed me."
Victor lowered his head.
"I know."
"I told you never to meet him alone."
"I wanted to explain."
"No."
Eleanor interrupted.
"You wanted forgiveness."
Victor said nothing.
She looked almost saddened.
"That has always been your weakness."
Under the bridge...
Aaron watched through his scope.
His earpiece crackled.
"Brooks."
It was Officer Melissa Grant.
"We have tactical units ready."
Aaron whispered,
"Hold position."
"What?"
"We still don't know who's telling the truth."
Melissa hesitated.
"Victor kidnapped Mrs. Hale."
"I know."
"But someone just tried to kill Victor."
Aaron kept watching.
"This operation has changed."
Back on the bridge...
Eleanor slowly approached Martha.
She untied the ropes binding her wrists.
To Julian's surprise...
Martha didn't pull away.
Instead, she rubbed her sore wrists and quietly asked,
"Why now?"
Eleanor answered gently.
"Because it's time."
Julian frowned.
"You know each other."
Neither woman replied immediately.
Finally...
Martha sighed.
"I've known Eleanor..."
"...for thirty-two years."
Julian stared.
His heart seemed to stop.
"What?"
The words hung in the fog.
Martha looked at her son.
"I'm sorry."
"I never wanted you to learn it like this."
Victor closed his eyes.
Eleanor remained calm.
Julian took one slow step backward.
"You knew them."
Martha nodded.
"Before I met Richard."
The bridge suddenly felt impossibly small.
His mother.
His father.
Victor.
Eleanor.
All connected long before he was born.
Eleanor folded her hands.
"Your mother wasn't kidnapped into the Circle."
"She joined."
Julian looked at Martha.
"Tell me she's lying."
Martha's tears returned.
"I can't."
Julian felt the ground disappear beneath him.
"You... worked for them?"
"For one year."
"I left."
"You don't leave."
Julian looked toward Victor.
"That's what everyone keeps saying."
Victor answered quietly.
"She's the only person who ever did."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"So what now?"
"You expect me to believe everyone was secretly working for the Circle?"
"No."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
"I expect you to stop believing life is divided into heroes and villains."
She looked toward the river.
"Richard made terrible choices."
"Victor made terrible choices."
"Martha made terrible choices."
"So did I."
Her eyes returned to Julian.
"The difference is..."
"...we survived long enough to regret them."
Aaron listened carefully through the directional microphone.
None of this matched anything in Richard's tapes.
Either Richard had lied...
Or Eleanor was rewriting history.
He couldn't tell.
Julian finally asked the question that had haunted him all night.
"Who killed Richard?"
No one answered.
Victor looked at Eleanor.
Martha looked at the ground.
Silence.
Julian's voice rose.
"WHO KILLED MY FATHER?"
Eleanor answered.
"No one."
Julian stared at her.
"He wasn't murdered."
Victor slowly nodded.
"She's telling the truth."
Julian clenched his fists.
"I watched him die."
Victor's eyes filled with something Julian had never expected.
Grief.
"Richard chose it."
The bridge became silent again.
Julian whispered,
"What does that mean?"
Victor removed a small silver key from his pocket.
He tossed it gently toward Julian.
Julian caught it instinctively.
It looked identical to the silver key from Richard's hidden safe.
Only smaller.
Victor spoke carefully.
"Richard discovered something."
"Something even Eleanor didn't know."
Eleanor's expression changed.
For the first time...
She looked concerned.
Victor continued.
"He built a dead man's switch."
Aaron frowned beneath the bridge.
A dead man's switch?
Victor looked directly at Julian.
"Your father knew someone inside the Circle had betrayed everyone."
"He didn't know who."
"So he created an insurance policy."
Julian remembered the tapes.
The journals.
The hidden compartments.
The grandfather clock.
Victor nodded.
"Every piece of evidence was only half the puzzle."
"The other half..."
He pointed toward the key.
"...has never been found."
Eleanor took one slow step forward.
"Victor."
"Enough."
He ignored her.
"Richard told me something the night before he died."
Victor smiled sadly.
"He said..."
'If Julian ever learns the truth... tell him to trust the one person nobody suspects.'
Julian immediately thought of Aaron.
Then Martha.
Then Thomas.
Then Bianca.
Who?
Eleanor's voice hardened.
"You've said enough."
Victor looked at her.
"No."
"I've stayed silent for twenty-six years."
"I'm finished protecting secrets."
He turned back toward Julian.
"The final archive..."
"...isn't hidden in a building."
Julian listened carefully.
"It's hidden..."
Victor stopped.
A sharp crack split the night.
Another gunshot.
Victor jerked violently.
A crimson stain spread across his chest.
The bullet had come from far beyond the bridge.
A sniper.
Victor staggered backward.
Julian caught him before he fell.
Victor struggled to breathe.
Blood filled his mouth.
Julian pressed both hands against the wound.
"No."
"Stay with me."
Victor smiled weakly.
"You have..."
"...your mother's eyes."
Julian leaned closer.
"Who?"
"Who can I trust?"
Victor whispered one final word.
"...Bianca..."
His body went limp.
Julian froze.
Bianca?
The woman who had tried to drown Martha?
The woman Richard had warned him to run from?
The woman Victor had just told him to trust?
Nothing made sense.
Suddenly...
Every Circle operative drew their weapons.
Not at Julian.
At Eleanor.
Aaron's eyes widened.
"What the..."
One operative stepped forward.
Removed the silver insignia from his shoulder.
Then another.
Then another.
Within seconds...
Nearly half the armed force had turned against Eleanor.
She looked around slowly.
No fear.
Only disappointment.
A man stepped from the limousine.
Julian recognized him instantly.
Hospital Director Samuel Whitmore.
The same administrator who had spoken to him after Martha's rescue.
Whitmore calmly removed a latex mask from his face.
Beneath it...
Was someone else entirely.
An older man Julian had never seen before.
He smiled.
"Eleanor."
"You've led the Circle long enough."
He looked toward Julian.
"Allow me to introduce myself."
"I am..."
"...the Founder."
Eleanor's calm expression finally cracked.
Quietly...
Almost in disbelief...
She whispered,
"Impossible."
The old man smiled.
May you like
"That's exactly what I wanted everyone to believe."
