Chapter 2: The First Crack in the Mask Julian stood motionless in the security office long after the call had ended. The screen still displayed the grainy reflection from the gate camera. Bianca's silhouette was distorted by the mansion's glass, but one detail remained unmistakable. Her foot. Pressing down. Not helping. Not hesitating. Pressing. The anonymous caller's words echoed inside his mind. "If you want your mother to survive... stop looking at Bianca." It wasn't a threat made in panic. It was a warning from someone who knew exactly what was happening. Julian saved the footage onto three encrypted flash drives. One he slipped into his wallet. One he locked inside the office safe. The third he hid beneath the false bottom of a wooden cigar box that had belonged to his late father. He trusted almost no one anymore. Tonight had destroyed that luxury. Twenty minutes later. St. Augustine Medical Center. The emergency department buzzed with controlled urgency. Doctors moved briskly between rooms while nurses adjusted IV lines and whispered updates into headsets. Julian sat outside Intensive Care Unit Three. His suit was still soaked from the pool. No one had offered him dry clothes. No one dared interrupt him. Finally, the ICU doors opened. A gray-haired physician stepped into the hallway. "Mr. Hale?" Julian rose immediately. "How is she?" The doctor removed his glasses. "She's stable." Julian finally released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "But..." The doctor continued. "She was fortunate." "Another two or three minutes underwater..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. Julian nodded silently. "Can I see her?" "For only a few minutes." Martha looked impossibly small beneath the hospital blankets. Machines surrounded her bed. A heart monitor beeped steadily beside her. An oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose. She opened her eyes as Julian entered. "My boy..." Her voice was barely audible. Julian sat beside her. "You scared me." A weak smile crossed her face. "I suppose..." "I've always been dramatic." For a brief moment, they both laughed. Then the laughter faded. Martha's eyes filled with fear. "You heard her." Julian nodded once. "I heard everything." Tears slipped down her cheeks. "I kept trying to tell you." "I know." "I thought I was losing my mind." "You weren't." "She made me believe I was." Julian reached for her hand. "I know." Martha looked toward the closed hospital door before whispering, "She wasn't alone." Julian stiffened. "What do you mean?" "I heard voices." "When?" "Three nights ago." She closed her eyes, searching her memory. "I woke up." "They thought I was asleep." "There was a man." Julian leaned closer. "Did you recognize his voice?" "No." "But..." She frowned. "He called her..." She struggled to remember. "...Number Seven." Julian blinked. "Number Seven?" Martha nodded weakly. "That's what he said." "'Seven... everything is almost finished.'" Julian's pulse quickened. Why would someone call Bianca by a number instead of her name? It sounded less like affection... ...and more like a code. Across town. A black Mercedes stopped beneath an abandoned warehouse. Bianca stepped out. Her elegant evening dress had been replaced by black slacks and a dark coat. She walked inside without hesitation. The warehouse appeared empty. Until a steel door opened. Beyond it lay something unexpected. A luxury office. Hidden beneath the warehouse floor. Several people sat around a long table. Men. Women. Different ages. Different nationalities. None of them spoke. At the head of the table sat an elderly man with silver hair. His tailored charcoal suit fit perfectly. His eyes were calm. Almost lifeless. "You failed." His voice remained soft. Bianca lowered her head. "I underestimated him." "You underestimated his timing." She said nothing. The old man pressed a button. A projector illuminated the wall. Images appeared. Julian. Martha. The Hale mansion. Bank records. Corporate ownership charts. Even Julian's travel schedule. Every detail. Every movement. Someone had been watching the Hale family for years. The old man folded his hands. "We invested twenty-three months placing you into Julian Hale's life." "We financed your charities." "We built your public reputation." "We removed obstacles." "And tonight..." His eyes hardened. "...you nearly destroyed everything." Bianca kept her expression controlled. "He wasn't supposed to return until tomorrow." "Yet he did." Silence. Then the old man spoke again. "Emotion." Bianca looked confused. "What?" "You became emotional." "You enjoyed watching the old woman suffer." "That was unnecessary." She lowered her eyes. He was right. For the first time in years... She had allowed hatred to interfere with discipline. A dangerous mistake. One that their organization never tolerated. The old man slid a thin folder across the table. "Your replacement." Bianca looked inside. Her breathing stopped. A photograph. A young woman. Beautiful. Elegant. Smiling beside Julian during a charity gala five years earlier. "Who is she?" "Olivia Bennett." "Financial attorney." "Harvard graduate." "Single." "She'll approach Julian if you fail." Bianca slowly closed the folder. "I won't fail." "You already have." Meanwhile... Julian sat inside the hospital cafeteria, replaying the evening over and over. Nothing fit anymore. Bianca. Number Seven. The anonymous call. Disabled cameras. The reflection. His mother wasn't imagining things. Someone had orchestrated every piece. His phone vibrated again. This time it was Detective Aaron Brooks. A longtime family friend. They had known each other since college. Julian answered. "Aaron." "I heard about your mother." Julian frowned. "I haven't told anyone." "You didn't." "The hospital called local police because it may involve attempted homicide." Julian looked around the empty cafeteria. "Can you meet?" "I'm already downstairs." Five minutes later. Aaron entered carrying two coffees. He wore plain clothes instead of a uniform. His expression immediately darkened after seeing Julian. "You look terrible." "I've had better evenings." Aaron handed him a coffee. "So." "What happened?" Julian considered lying. Then decided against it. He trusted Aaron. Or at least... He wanted to. He explained everything. From entering the mansion... To Bianca's confession... To the anonymous phone call. Aaron listened without interrupting. When Julian finished... The detective remained silent for nearly a minute. Finally he spoke. "If everything you heard is accurate..." "It is." "...then Bianca isn't acting alone." "I know." Aaron leaned back. "But here's the problem." "What?" "If we arrest her tonight..." "She walks." Julian's jaw tightened. "The recording isn't enough." "The reflection?" "Too blurry." "The confession?" "No recording." "Martha's testimony?" "The defense attacks her age." Julian slammed his fist lightly against the table. "So we do nothing?" Aaron shook his head. "No." "We investigate quietly." "No warrants." "No arrests." "No leaks." "If she belongs to something larger..." "I want the entire network." Julian nodded slowly. It made sense. Emotion wanted immediate justice. Evidence demanded patience. Aaron suddenly looked uncomfortable. "There's something else." Julian noticed the change immediately. "What?" Aaron slid a sealed evidence envelope across the table. "It arrived anonymously at the station this morning." Julian opened it. Inside was a single photograph. His heart stopped. The picture showed his father. Richard Hale. Standing beside... The same silver-haired man from the warehouse. Both men were smiling. The photograph had been taken nearly twenty-five years earlier. On the back, someone had written four words. HE NEVER TOLD YOU. Julian stared at the handwriting. His father had died believing his family was safe. Or had he? Aaron spoke quietly. "I checked the photo." "It's authentic." Julian looked up slowly. "My father knew them." Aaron nodded. "It appears so." Julian's world shifted once again. Everything he believed began collapsing. Maybe this wasn't a crime that started six months ago. Maybe it hadn't started with Bianca. Maybe... It had begun decades before his father ever died. As Julian slipped the photograph back into the envelope, neither man noticed the young nurse standing outside the cafeteria. She appeared to be checking patient charts. In reality... A tiny wireless earpiece rested beneath her hair. She whispered only six words. "Target has seen the photograph." Then she walked away without looking back. End of Chapter 2 / Chapter 13 / 14

Chapter 14: A Father's Last Confession

Chapter 14: A Father's Last Confession

The cemetery was no longer quiet.

Helicopters crossed the night sky.

Police sirens echoed from every direction.

Phones rang without pause as governments, journalists, and investigators around the world scrambled to understand the unprecedented data leak.

Yet Julian heard none of it.

His eyes remained fixed on the small USB drive resting in Claire Donovan's hand.

Richard Hale had intended it for him alone.

Not for OSI.

Not for the Circle.

Not even for history.

For his son.

Claire looked at Julian.

"I'm not opening it."

Aaron glanced at her.

"Why?"

"Because Richard was very specific."

She handed the drive back.

"If he wanted governments to see it, he would've included it in the dead man's switch."

Sebastian nodded in agreement.

"He separated it for a reason."

Julian turned the drive over in his fingers.

It carried no label.

Only a tiny engraved letter.

J

Back at the OSI command center...

A secure, air-gapped computer was prepared.

No internet.

No external network.

No wireless hardware.

Claire personally verified every connection.

"If there's malware," Aaron muttered, "it stays here."

Julian inserted the USB.

The screen remained black for several seconds.

Then a single file appeared.

JULIAN.MP4

Creation Date:

Twenty-three years earlier.

Julian swallowed hard.

"It's a video."

He clicked.

The screen faded in.

Richard Hale appeared.

He looked younger than on the cassette recordings.

Healthier.

He smiled the moment he saw the camera.

"Hello, son."

Julian couldn't breathe.

Richard leaned forward.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I wasn't able to tell you these things myself."

He paused.

"I hope you still laugh too loudly."

"I hope you still forget where you leave your car keys."

"I hope your mother still complains that you work too much."

Julian smiled through tears.

Those tiny details.

Only a father would think to mention them.

Richard's expression became serious.

"I've left you money."

Julian frowned.

Money?

Richard shook his head, as though answering the question.

"Not because I think you need wealth."

"I left it because rebuilding broken lives costs more than destroying them."

Aaron exchanged a glance with Claire.

This wasn't a confession.

It was a farewell.

Richard continued.

"There are children."

"So many children."

"Some were taken."

"Some were manipulated."

"Some were trained to become people they never chose to be."

His eyes softened.

"If the Circle falls..."

"...don't spend your life hunting everyone who served it."

"Hunt the people who created the system."

"And save everyone else."

Julian immediately thought of Bianca.

Richard smiled faintly.

"I know you'll be angry."

"You have every right."

"But anger is a terrible architect."

"It only knows how to build prisons."

The video continued.

"There is one final thing."

Richard leaned closer.

"So listen carefully."

Julian unconsciously moved closer to the screen.

"If Bianca is still alive..."

"...forgive her."

The room became silent.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"I met her before they erased her."

"She was four years old."

"She loved drawing horses."

"She wanted to become a veterinarian."

"She cried every time she saw injured birds."

His voice trembled.

"They stole that little girl."

"They replaced her with Number Seven."

Julian closed his eyes.

The woman at the swimming pool.

The child Richard described.

They felt like two completely different people.

Richard reached into his pocket.

He removed an old crayon drawing.

Two stick figures holding hands.

One larger.

One smaller.

At the bottom...

In uneven handwriting...

Richard & Bee

Julian stared.

"Bee..."

Richard smiled.

"She couldn't pronounce Bianca."

"So she called herself Bee."

He carefully folded the drawing.

"I promised her..."

"...I'd find her again."

His eyes filled with regret.

"I failed."

The room remained silent.

Even Sebastian lowered his head.

After several moments, Richard spoke again.

"I don't know whether Victor was your biological father."

Julian looked up sharply.

What?

Richard nodded slowly.

"The tests were destroyed."

"Too many people lied."

"I stopped caring."

He smiled.

"The first time you called me Dad..."

"...that question ended forever."

Julian felt tears roll down his face.

For twenty-three years he had believed blood defined family.

Richard had spent twenty-three years proving the opposite.

The video neared its end.

Richard leaned back.

"If you're wondering whether I regret anything..."

He laughed quietly.

"I regret working too much."

"I regret missing your school concert."

"I regret pretending I wasn't afraid."

Then...

"I never regretted choosing you."

Never.

Not once.

The screen faded to black.

Julian remained motionless.

No one spoke.

Finally...

A new video began automatically.

Not recorded by Richard.

Security camera footage.

Timestamp:

The night Richard died.

Aaron immediately leaned forward.

"This was never in the archive."

The footage showed Richard inside his study.

Alone.

He looked healthy.

Calm.

He walked to the hidden safe.

Placed several documents inside.

Then...

Someone knocked.

Richard smiled.

"Come in."

The study door opened.

Bianca entered.

Four years old.

Holding a stuffed rabbit.

She ran straight into Richard's arms.

Julian stared in disbelief.

Richard lifted her effortlessly.

"What are you doing awake, Bee?"

"I had a scary dream."

Richard kissed her forehead.

"I'm here."

"You'll always be safe."

Julian's heart broke.

The child laughed.

Wrapped her tiny arms around Richard's neck.

She clearly adored him.

Richard looked toward the security camera.

Toward whoever might someday watch.

He smiled sadly.

Then whispered...

"Take care of both my children."

The footage ended.

No one in the room moved.

Claire quietly wiped away a tear.

Sebastian closed his eyes.

Aaron stared at the frozen image.

Richard had never seen Bianca as an asset.

Or a weapon.

He had loved her like family.

Julian looked at the little girl's smiling face.

Then remembered the woman standing over Martha in the pool.

The contrast was unbearable.

Suddenly...

An OSI analyst rushed into the room.

"Director!"

Claire stood immediately.

"What happened?"

"The global leak is working."

"But..."

"What?"

"We found encrypted files that weren't released."

Claire frowned.

"Whose files?"

The analyst looked toward Julian.

"They all belong to Number Seven."

Julian's heartbeat quickened.

"Bianca?"

The analyst nodded.

"There are personal recordings."

"Psychological reports."

"Memory reconstruction logs."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"What else?"

"A location."

Julian stepped forward.

"What location?"

The analyst swallowed.

"A secure medical facility."

He looked down at the report.

"According to the files..."

"They're preparing..."

"...Memory Reset Number Seven."

Claire's face went pale.

Sebastian whispered,

"They're going to erase Bianca."

Julian didn't hesitate.

He grabbed his jacket.

Aaron looked at him.

"Where are you going?"

Julian's answer came without hesitation.

May you like

"To keep my father's final promise."
