Chapter 2: The Bride Behind the Veil The hallway became a battlefield of silence. Julian stood frozen between two impossible truths. Behind the basement door was a woman claiming to be Elena. In front of him stood another Elena. Both wearing the same voice. Both carrying the same name. And only one of them could be telling the truth. The woman at the end of the corridor slowly lifted her hand and touched the edge of her veil. “My love,” she whispered. Her voice was gentle. Too gentle. The kind of softness that felt carefully practiced. Julian stared at the dark liquid dripping from the bottom of her wedding dress. It wasn’t blood. Not exactly. It was thicker. Darker. Like ink mixed with something he didn’t want to understand. “Elena…” Julian whispered. The bride tilted her head. A small smile appeared beneath the veil. “Yes?” His fingers tightened around the basement door handle. “Who is inside?” For a moment, the mansion became completely silent. The distant music from the ballroom disappeared. The voices of the guests vanished. Even the old wooden walls seemed to stop creaking. Elena took one slow step forward. “You shouldn’t have come here.” Julian felt his stomach drop. That wasn’t an answer. “Who is inside?” Her smile faded. “Someone who wants to destroy us.” “Destroy us?” “Yes.” She walked closer. Her heels clicked against the marble floor. Each sound echoed through the hallway like a countdown. “She has been trying to ruin my life for years,” Elena said. “She knows how to manipulate people. She knows how to make herself look innocent.” Julian looked at the basement door. “But she sounds like you.” Elena stopped. Only a few feet separated them now. “That’s because she is my sister.” The words hit him harder than he expected. “Sister?” Elena slowly nodded. “A twin sister.” Julian said nothing. The pieces in his mind refused to connect. “Elena, you never told me you had a twin.” Her expression changed. For the first time, Julian saw something behind her eyes. Fear. Real fear. “I wanted to.” “Then why didn’t you?” “Because she is the reason I left my family ten years ago.” A cold wind moved through the hallway. The candles on the walls flickered. Julian looked back at the basement door. “Why is your sister locked down there?” Elena looked away. “She’s dangerous.” The answer came too quickly. Almost rehearsed. Julian noticed. “How dangerous?” Elena hesitated. “She killed someone.” The hallway seemed to shrink around him. “Who?” “My father.” Julian’s eyes widened. He had heard stories about Elena’s family. The mysterious old family who owned one of the oldest estates in the region. But she had never mentioned her father. Never mentioned any tragedy. Never mentioned a sister. “You told me your parents died in an accident.” “They did.” “No.” Julian stepped back. “You said they died together.” Elena’s face became unreadable. “They did.” “Then how did your sister kill your father?” For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Elena removed her veil. Slowly. Carefully. And Julian wished she hadn’t. Because underneath the beautiful face he knew so well… There was something broken. A scar ran from her temple down toward her cheek. A scar he had never seen before. “She did this to me.” Julian stared. “When?” “The night my family died.” The mansion lights suddenly flickered. Once. Twice. Then darkness swallowed the hallway. Julian heard Elena gasp. A second later, emergency lights turned on. The basement door was open. Julian turned. His blood ran cold. The lock that had refused to move moments ago was now hanging broken from the door. Someone had escaped. “Elena…” She looked toward the open basement. Her face drained of color. “No.” A whisper. Almost impossible to hear. “No, no, no…” Julian looked at her. “What?” She grabbed his arm. “We have to leave.” “Why?” “Because she is no longer trapped.” A sound came from behind them. A slow clap. Clap. Clap. Clap. Julian and Elena turned. A woman stood at the entrance of the hallway. She looked exactly like Elena. Same eyes. Same face. Same voice. But she wasn’t wearing a wedding dress. She wore a simple white hospital gown. Her wrists were covered with old scars. Her hair was messy. And her smile was terrifyingly calm. “After all these years…” The woman looked directly at Elena. “You still tell the same story.” Elena stepped in front of Julian. “Stay away from him.” The woman laughed softly. “Still pretending to protect people?” Julian looked between them. “Who are you?” The woman stared at him. Then smiled. “I’m Elena.” The real Elena shook her head. “Don’t listen to her.” The woman in the hospital gown walked closer. “She always does this.” “Does what?” “She steals my life.” Julian felt his chest tighten. “What?” The woman pointed at Elena’s wedding dress. “That dress belonged to me.” Silence. “The ring on her finger belonged to me.” She looked at Julian. “And you…” Her smile disappeared. “You were supposed to marry me.” Julian felt the ground disappear beneath his feet. “What are you talking about?” The woman looked at Elena. “Tell him.” Elena said nothing. “Tell him what happened before he came here.” Still nothing. The woman laughed. “That’s what I thought.” She turned toward Julian. “My name is Evelyn.” Julian stared. “Evelyn?” “Yes.” She touched her face. “The sister Elena erased.” Julian looked at Elena. The woman he loved. The woman he was about to marry. The woman who had promised him forever. “Is this true?” Elena’s lips trembled. “Julian…” “Is this true?” Her silence answered him. The mansion suddenly felt different. Not like a home. Not like a wedding venue. Like a cage. A cage built long before he arrived. Evelyn stepped closer. “She didn’t choose you because she loved you.” Julian looked at her. “Then why?” Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the basement. “Because you are the final piece.” Julian felt a chill crawl across his skin. “The final piece of what?” Evelyn smiled. “A promise our family made twenty years ago.” Elena suddenly screamed. “Stop!” But it was too late. Because from the basement below… Another sound echoed. A sound that froze everyone. A sound of chains. Then a voice. An old voice. A voice that should have been dead. “Bring him downstairs.” Julian stared toward the basement. “Who said that?” Neither sister answered. Because both of them looked terrified. And then Elena whispered: “My father.” Julian’s heart stopped. “Your father is dead.” Elena looked at him. “No.” Her voice cracked. “He was never dead.” The basement door slowly opened wider. Darkness waited below. And from inside the shadows… Something moved. Something that had been waiting for Julian to arrive. End of Chapter 2 / Chapter 2 / 8

Chapter 4: The Son Hidden in the Bloodline

Chapter 4: The Son Hidden in the Bloodline

The photograph trembled between Julian’s fingers.

For several seconds, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The man standing beside Victor Vale wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t some forgotten face from the past.

He was someone Julian had known his entire life.

Someone whose voice he still remembered.

Someone whose old jacket still hung in his childhood home closet.

His father.

Daniel Hart.

Dead for fifteen years.

Or at least…

That was what Julian had always believed.

“No…”

The word escaped his lips like a broken whisper.

Elena watched his expression change.

She knew.

That was the worst part.

She knew exactly what he had just discovered.

“Julian…”

He looked up sharply.

“How long?”

Elena froze.

“How long have you known?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence was enough.

Julian laughed softly.

A hollow, painful sound.

“Of course.”

He looked around the mansion.

The hidden basement.

The fake identities.

The locked doors.

The impossible secrets.

“I was never invited here for a wedding.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Please let me explain.”

“No.”

His voice stopped her.

“Not another explanation.”

Julian held up the photograph.

“I want the truth.”

Victor Vale’s footsteps echoed somewhere inside the mansion.

The old man was gone.

But his presence remained.

Like a shadow that had learned how to breathe.

Evelyn watched Julian carefully.

For the first time, there was no anger in her eyes.

Only pity.

“Now you understand.”

Julian looked at her.

“Understand what?”

“That you were never outside this family.”

She pointed at the photograph.

“You were always part of it.”

Julian shook his head.

“My father wasn’t part of your family.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“He was.”

“No.”

“He was Victor’s closest friend.”

Julian stared.

“What?”

Elena finally spoke.

“Your father and mine grew up together.”

Julian looked at her.

“They knew each other?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did my father never mention him?”

Because he couldn’t.

The voice came from behind them.

Victor Vale stepped out from the darkness.

Everyone turned.

Julian immediately moved back.

“You.”

Victor smiled.

“You have so many questions.”

Julian clenched his fists.

“You’re going to answer them.”

Victor looked amused.

“You sound just like Daniel.”

The mention of his father made Julian’s anger rise.

“Don’t say his name.”

Victor’s smile faded slightly.

“Your father was a good man.”

“You killed him.”

“No.”

Victor tilted his head.

“I saved him.”

The room went silent.

Julian stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to listen.”

Victor walked toward an old wooden table.

On it were dozens of documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

Records.

A lifetime of secrets.

“Twenty years ago, my family was collapsing.”

Victor picked up one of the papers.

“People think wealth protects you.”

He smiled bitterly.

“It doesn’t.”

“Money only builds a bigger cage.”

Julian said nothing.

“My father created a system.”

“What system?”

“A bloodline agreement.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

“Here we go again.”

Victor ignored her.

“The Vale family survived because of one rule.”

He placed the document on the table.

“The heir must always be chosen.”

Julian frowned.

“Chosen?”

“Yes.”

Victor looked at Elena and Evelyn.

“Between the strongest.”

Elena’s face became pale.

“And when there were no suitable heirs…”

Victor looked at Julian.

“We found one.”

The room became cold.

Julian stared.

“You’re saying my father gave me to you?”

Victor didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

Julian felt something break inside him.

“No.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Julian, listen to me.”

“Did my father know?”

Her face changed.

A small hesitation.

Then:

“Yes.”

The word destroyed him.

Julian stepped back.

“My own father?”

“He was trying to protect you.”

“By leaving me?”

Elena looked away.

“He believed Victor would come after you if you stayed with him.”

Julian laughed.

“So he disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And let me believe he abandoned me?”

Tears appeared in Elena’s eyes.

“He thought it was the only way.”

Julian looked at Victor.

“You took my father from me.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Your father took you from us.”

Julian stared.

“What?”

Victor walked closer.

“Daniel was supposed to complete the agreement.”

“What agreement?”

“The marriage.”

Everyone froze.

Julian looked at Elena.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“The wedding was arranged long before you met Elena.”

Elena whispered:

“Father…”

“You and Elena were promised.”

Julian felt sick.

“No.”

Victor continued.

“Your father broke the agreement.”

“Why?”

“Because he discovered what I was really doing.”

Victor’s face darkened.

“He tried to expose me.”

Julian’s voice lowered.

“And you killed him.”

Victor looked away.

“I gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Disappear forever…”

A pause.

“Or watch his son become part of the family he betrayed.”

Julian’s breathing became heavier.

“You’re insane.”

Victor smiled.

“Perhaps.”

Then he turned toward Evelyn.

“But I was right about one thing.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“What?”

Victor looked at her.

“Only one child survived the test.”

The room froze.

Julian looked between the sisters.

“What test?”

No one answered.

Victor walked toward the basement door.

“Come.”

Julian didn’t move.

Victor looked back.

“You want the truth?”

He smiled.

“It is waiting below.”

The basement door opened.

Cold air rushed upward.

And from inside came the sound of a machine.

A machine still running.

A machine that had been operating for twenty years.

Julian looked at Elena.

She whispered:

“Don’t go down there.”

For the first time…

She sounded genuinely terrified.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because that’s where my father kept the proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Elena looked at him.

“Proof that one of us was never supposed to survive.”

A long silence followed.

Then Victor spoke from the basement.

“Julian.”

His voice echoed.

“Come meet the reason your wedding had to happen.”

Julian stared into the darkness.

Then he saw something.

A small room beneath the stairs.

Inside was a wall covered with photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every photo was of him.

His childhood.

His school years.

His first job.

His entire life.

Someone had been watching him.

For decades.

And written across the wall in red letters were four words:

“THE PERFECT HEIR.”

Julian slowly stepped backward.

Because he finally understood.

This was never a wedding.

It was a ritual.

May you like

And he was the sacrifice.
