Chapter 9: The Empty Vault

Chapter 9: The Empty Vault
The warehouse fell silent.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Rain hammered against the rusted roof, each drop echoing through the cavernous space like the ticking of a clock counting down to something terrible.
Marcus lowered the satellite phone.
"They emptied Vault 317."
Victor slowly shook his head.
"No."
"That's impossible."
"The vault hasn't existed on public records for over forty years."
Marcus looked at him.
"They knew exactly where to go."
Alessandro stared at Daniel's letter.
His eyes narrowed.
"They weren't following us."
"They were following Daniel."
I frowned.
"Daniel died three years ago."
Alessandro looked at me.
"Exactly."
"If the vault was emptied two hours ago..."
"...someone only discovered the key recently."
Everyone looked toward Emma.
My heart sank.
The key.
Emma had unknowingly revealed it.
Someone had been watching.
Listening.
Waiting.
Marcus suddenly pulled the black teddy bear from his backpack.
He placed it on an old wooden crate.
"The recorder."
Victor nodded.
"It wasn't just recording."
Marcus carefully cut open the teddy's stuffing.
Hidden deep inside...
Another object fell into his hand.
A tiny black circuit board.
Victor's face changed instantly.
"...GPS."
Marcus nodded.
"They've been tracking Emma."
"For weeks."
I felt the room spin.
"They knew where she slept."
"They knew where she played."
"They knew every place I took her."
Marcus quietly answered,
"Yes."
Alessandro walked toward the warehouse window.
Across the East River...
The Manhattan skyline shimmered beneath the storm.
He didn't blink.
"They wanted us to find the key."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
Alessandro turned.
"Think."
"They could've taken Emma."
"They had dozens of opportunities."
"They didn't."
"They planted cameras."
"They planted microphones."
"They left clues."
Marcus slowly understood.
"They were leading us."
Alessandro nodded.
"Exactly."
"Not to the vault."
"To whatever came after the vault."
Victor unfolded Daniel's handwritten map again.
His eyes scanned every line.
Then...
He froze.
"There."
Marcus stepped closer.
"What?"
Victor pointed toward the lower corner.
A tiny pencil mark.
Almost invisible.
Not part of the original map.
Just three handwritten numbers.
11:45
Marcus frowned.
"A time?"
Victor nodded slowly.
"I think so."
Emma suddenly yawned.
She looked exhausted.
Alessandro crouched beside her.
"You should sleep."
She rubbed her eyes.
"I had a dream."
Nobody answered.
Children often talked about dreams.
Tonight...
None of us dismissed anything.
Emma looked at Alessandro.
"Daddy said..."
"...the train doesn't leave from the bank."
The room froze.
"What train?"
Emma shrugged.
"I don't know."
"He said..."
"...follow the birds."
Marcus and Victor exchanged a glance.
Birds.
Ravens.
No...
Pigeons.
Grand Dominion Bank sat directly above the abandoned Lexington freight station.
A station closed decades ago.
Victor's eyes widened.
"The tunnels."
Marcus immediately spread a subway map across the crate.
"There."
He pointed beneath Manhattan.
Old freight lines.
Abandoned maintenance tunnels.
Cold War escape routes.
One tunnel ran directly beneath the bank.
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"They didn't empty the vault."
Victor looked up.
"They moved it."
At that exact moment...
The warehouse lights flickered.
Marcus instantly killed the lantern.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Outside...
An engine.
Slow.
Heavy.
Stopping.
No headlights.
Marcus whispered,
"We've got company."
Everyone reached for a weapon.
Except Emma.
She quietly looked through a crack in the warehouse wall.
Then whispered,
"Three cars."
Marcus carefully peeked outside.
His face darkened.
"Black SUVs."
"No license plates."
Alessandro checked his pistol.
"How many?"
Marcus counted.
"At least fifteen."
Victor cursed under his breath.
"They found us."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"They were waiting."
A loudspeaker crackled outside.
A calm male voice echoed through the rain.
"Mr. Moretti..."
No distortion.
No electronic filter.
His voice was refined.
Educated.
Almost friendly.
"I believe you've caused enough inconvenience for one evening."
Nobody answered.
The voice continued.
"Return the USB."
"And the child."
Every muscle in my body locked.
Emma gripped my hand.
Alessandro stepped toward the warehouse doors.
Marcus blocked him.
"Don't."
Instead...
Alessandro spoke loudly enough for the stranger to hear.
"You've spent three years chasing a dead man's secret."
A pause.
"Was it worth it?"
Silence.
Then...
The stranger laughed.
A warm laugh.
Almost grandfatherly.
"You still think this was about Daniel?"
Another pause.
"You poor boy."
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
"What do you want?"
The answer came immediately.
"You."
The warehouse became deathly still.
The stranger continued.
"Your father refused."
"Daniel refused."
"I'm giving you one final opportunity."
Victor's breathing became shallow.
Marcus whispered,
"...He."
Alessandro glanced sideways.
"You know him?"
Victor nodded once.
"I've never met him."
"But Lorenzo spoke about him."
"Only once."
"What did he call him?"
Victor swallowed.
"The Curator."
The loudspeaker crackled again.
"You have sixty seconds."
"If you surrender..."
"...the woman and the child live."
"If you don't..."
The sentence remained unfinished.
Instead...
A single gunshot echoed outside.
Marcus looked through the broken window.
One of his scouts collapsed face-first into the mud.
Dead.
No warning.
No hesitation.
The countdown had begun.
Alessandro slowly removed the real USB from inside his jacket.
He stared at it.
Then...
To everyone's shock...
He snapped it cleanly in half.
Marcus shouted,
"What are you doing?"
The tiny memory chip cracked.
The plastic shell fell onto the concrete floor.
Victor looked horrified.
"The evidence!"
Alessandro calmly looked at the broken pieces.
Then smiled.
"The evidence..."
He reached into the lining of his tuxedo.
"...was never in this one."
He pulled out...
A second USB.
Identical.
Marcus stared.
"You've had another one?"
Alessandro nodded.
"My father taught me something."
"When people know you're carrying one secret..."
"...carry two."
Outside...
The Curator's laughter stopped.
For the first time all night...
His voice lost its calm.
"Interesting."
A pause.
Then came seven words that chilled everyone inside the warehouse.
"Kill everyone except Alessandro Moretti."
Automatic rifles were raised.
Safety catches clicked.
Marcus took one slow breath.
"There are too many."
Alessandro looked toward the old freight tunnel entrance beneath the warehouse floor.
Then quietly said,
May you like
"Not if we disappear first."
