Chapter 7: Home Was Never Safe

Chapter 7: Home Was Never Safe
Home.
The word echoed through my mind like a prayer.
Like a memory.
Like something I'd already lost.
For three years, my apartment had been the only place where Emma and I could pretend the world outside didn't exist. It was tiny. The wallpaper peeled near the kitchen window. The elevator broke down twice a month.
But it was ours.
Or so I'd believed.
Now I couldn't stop staring at the photograph lying on Alessandro's desk.
Emma.
Asleep.
Wrapped in her favorite yellow blanket.
Her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath one arm.
Someone had stood beside her bed.
Taken the picture.
Walked back out.
And left without making a sound.
I felt sick.
"We're leaving."
Alessandro's voice cut through the silence.
Marcus immediately began issuing orders into his radio.
"Alpha Team to the garage."
"Bravo Team secure the perimeter."
"No marked vehicles."
"Radio silence."
Within seconds, the mansion became a military operation.
The terrified guests were escorted into a secured wing.
Every exit remained locked.
No one entered.
No one left.
Victor looked toward Alessandro.
"If they're expecting us..."
"They'll already be watching the apartment."
"I know."
Alessandro buttoned his jacket.
"So we'll give them exactly what they expect."
Marcus looked confused.
"You have another plan?"
A faint smile crossed Alessandro's face.
"They think they're hunting prey."
"They've forgotten..."
"...hunters can be hunted."
Ten minutes later...
Three identical black SUVs rolled out of the underground garage.
One headed east.
Another west.
The third disappeared toward downtown Manhattan.
Each carried armed guards.
Only one carried us.
Or so anyone watching would think.
The truth was...
We never entered an SUV.
Marcus led us through a maintenance tunnel beneath the mansion.
A hidden passage.
Built decades earlier.
It emerged inside an abandoned church nearly half a mile away.
Rain poured through the broken roof.
Thunder shook the stained-glass windows.
Outside...
An old delivery van waited.
No luxury.
No bulletproof armor.
Just faded white paint with the words:
Hudson Electrical Services
Marcus smiled.
"Nobody shoots electricians."
Emma sat quietly between Alessandro and me.
She hadn't spoken since seeing the photograph.
Instead...
She held my hand with both of hers.
Tighter than ever.
Alessandro noticed.
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out a wrapped peppermint.
"Here."
Emma blinked.
"For me?"
He nodded.
"My mother always gave me one whenever I was scared."
Emma accepted it.
For the first time all night...
She smiled.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But real.
I looked at Alessandro.
"You didn't have to..."
He interrupted softly.
"She's a child."
The words were simple.
Yet something inside him had changed.
He wasn't protecting evidence anymore.
He was protecting Emma.
Thirty-five minutes later...
The van stopped.
Marcus killed the headlights.
My apartment building stood across the street.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
A cat slept beneath a parked car.
A television flickered behind a second-floor curtain.
Someone walked a dog.
Life continued.
Marcus frowned.
"I don't like it."
Neither did Alessandro.
He studied every window.
Every rooftop.
Every parked vehicle.
Then...
He whispered,
"Where's Mrs. Alvarez?"
I blinked.
"My neighbor?"
He nodded.
"She waters the flowers every night at nine."
I looked toward her balcony.
Empty.
The flowerpots sat untouched.
Marcus immediately understood.
"She's never missed a night."
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Marcus motioned to two guards.
They crossed the street silently.
Weapons concealed beneath their jackets.
One disappeared through the front entrance.
The other circled behind the building.
Thirty seconds.
One minute.
Nothing.
Then...
Marcus's earpiece crackled.
"Apartment secured."
"No movement."
He nodded.
"Let's go."
The hallway smelled of fresh bleach.
Too fresh.
Mrs. Alvarez always complained about strong cleaning chemicals.
Tonight...
The odor was overwhelming.
Emma buried her face against my shoulder.
"It smells funny."
Marcus stopped outside my apartment.
The front door stood slightly open.
Just enough to notice.
I stared.
"I locked it."
Marcus raised one finger.
Everyone froze.
He slowly pushed the door wider.
The apartment was dark.
Silent.
Untouched.
Almost.
The family photographs had been turned upside down.
Every single one.
My wedding picture.
Upside down.
Emma's baby photo.
Upside down.
Daniel smiling at the beach.
Upside down.
My breathing quickened.
"They were here."
Marcus entered first.
Room by room.
Kitchen.
Clear.
Bathroom.
Clear.
Bedroom.
Clear.
Then...
He stopped.
"My God."
We hurried inside.
Emma's bedroom looked exactly as we'd left it.
Except for one thing.
On her pillow...
Sat a small black teddy bear.
I'd never seen it before.
Emma whispered,
"That's not mine."
Marcus carefully picked it up.
Something rattled inside.
He slowly unzipped its back.
A tiny digital recorder fell into his hand.
Still blinking.
Recording.
Marcus pressed stop.
A female voice immediately filled the room.
My own voice.
From yesterday morning.
Making breakfast.
Talking to Emma.
Every conversation.
Every laugh.
Every cry.
Someone had planted a listening device inside my daughter's bedroom.
Not yesterday.
Weeks ago.
Marcus's phone vibrated violently.
He answered.
"What?"
His expression changed.
"When?"
He turned toward Alessandro.
"The decoy convoy."
"What about it?"
Marcus swallowed.
"They attacked all three SUVs."
Alessandro stared.
"Casualties?"
Marcus looked away.
"Twenty-one dead."
The room fell silent.
Twenty-one men.
Killed.
To reach us.
Alessandro closed his eyes for a long moment.
When he opened them again...
There was no grief.
Only resolve.
"They've declared war."
Marcus nodded.
"They already did."
Emma suddenly walked toward her toy shelf.
She ignored everyone.
Reached behind a row of children's books.
Then pulled out...
A small metal key.
I frowned.
"Emma..."
"Where did you get that?"
She looked confused.
"Daddy gave it to me."
Every heartbeat in the room stopped.
I knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart..."
"Daddy couldn't have."
She frowned.
"The man who looked like Daddy."
"He said..."
"...only give it to the man who still keeps his promises."
She turned.
Walked directly toward Alessandro.
And placed the key into his hand.
No one spoke.
Alessandro stared at the tiny brass key.
On one side...
The number 317 was engraved.
On the other...
A single raven.
Victor's eyes widened.
"I know that key."
Marcus looked at him.
"Where?"
Victor's face turned pale.
"There are only twelve of them."
"They open private safety deposit vaults beneath..."
He stopped.
Alessandro finished the sentence.
"...Grand Dominion Bank."
Victor nodded.
"But those vaults don't exist on any official blueprint."
"They were built during the Cold War."
Marcus frowned.
"What would Daniel hide there?"
Victor looked directly at Alessandro.
"If Daniel really worked with your father..."
"...everything."
Before anyone could say another word...
A loud explosion rocked the entire apartment building.
The lights went out.
The floor lurched beneath our feet.
Outside...
Someone shouted:
May you like
"The building's on fire!"
