Chapter 2: The Box Opens The ballroom didn't breathe. It waited. Six armed security guards marched across the polished marble floor with military precision. Between them rested a white storage box decorated with tiny blue flowers. The same flowers Emma had described. The same flowers I had seen six weeks earlier while dusting Vanessa Cole's walk-in closet. My knees nearly gave out. She hadn't lied. Neither had I. Around us, three hundred guests stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers. Politicians who had negotiated billion-dollar deals suddenly looked like frightened schoolchildren. CEOs stopped pretending to whisper. Even the orchestra remained motionless, their bows suspended above silent strings. Nobody wanted to be the first person to move. Because everyone understood something had shifted. This was no longer an engagement party. It was an execution. Vanessa took one hurried step forward. "Alessandro... please." It was the first crack in her perfect performance. Her voice trembled. Not with sadness. With fear. Real fear. Alessandro didn't look at her. His cold gray eyes remained fixed on the flower-patterned box as the guards placed it in the center of the ballroom. "Open it." His voice barely rose above a whisper. No one hesitated. One guard snapped the plastic security seal. Another slowly lifted the lid. Every eye followed. Every heartbeat seemed to stop. Inside... Folded neatly beneath layers of white tissue paper... Lay a perfectly sculpted silicone pregnancy belly. A gasp rolled through the ballroom like a wave crashing against stone. Someone whispered, "My God..." The silicone looked disturbingly realistic. Skin tone. Stretch marks. Even faint blue veins. Designed to fool cameras. Doctors. Lovers. Anyone. One of the senators quietly lowered his champagne glass. A famous television anchor reached for her phone before realizing no signal could save this moment. Vanessa's face turned ghost white. "No..." Her voice cracked. "That's not mine." Nobody answered. The head of security carefully lifted the fake belly from the box. Beneath it rested another item. A folded receipt. Alessandro extended his hand. The receipt was placed in his palm. He unfolded it slowly. The silence deepened. His eyes scanned the page once. Then again. His expression never changed. But I saw something tighten along his jaw. He handed the receipt to his family attorney. "Read it." The older man adjusted his glasses. His voice echoed through the ballroom. "Silicone maternity prosthetic..." He swallowed. "Premium custom model." A pause. "Purchased six weeks ago." Another pause. "Customer name..." His voice almost disappeared. "Vanessa Cole." The room exploded. Not with applause. With whispers. "No way..." "She faked everything..." "Is she insane?" "I knew something felt wrong..." Vanessa suddenly laughed. A loud... Sharp... Almost desperate laugh. "This proves nothing!" She pointed wildly toward the receipt. "Anyone could print that!" She spun toward me. "This woman planted it!" Then toward Alessandro. "She broke into my room!" Finally toward the guests. "You're all watching a setup!" Nobody believed her. Not anymore. Alessandro finally looked at her. His gaze was colder than the rain striking the windows. "I gave you every opportunity to tell me the truth." She reached for him. He stepped back. The movement lasted less than a second. But it broke something inside her. Tears spilled down her cheeks. Real tears this time. "You don't understand..." "I loved you." "I still do." "You forced me!" The ballroom fell silent again. Alessandro frowned. "I forced you..." "...to fake my child?" Vanessa opened her mouth. Closed it. Then looked around the room. Searching. For someone. Not someone to help. Someone to warn. I noticed it immediately. So did Alessandro. His eyes narrowed. "You aren't afraid of losing me." He spoke quietly. "You're afraid of someone else." Vanessa froze. One tiny mistake. Barely noticeable. Unless someone had spent his entire life studying lies. Alessandro smiled. It wasn't a pleasant smile. It was the smile of a man solving a puzzle. "Interesting." He slowly turned toward the security chief. "Search the box." The guards carefully emptied everything onto a nearby table. Tissue paper. Packaging foam. Instruction booklet. Warranty card. Nothing else. Vanessa almost sighed with relief. Almost. Then Emma tugged gently on my sleeve. "Mama..." She whispered so softly only I heard. "The shiny thing." I frowned. "What shiny thing?" Emma pointed toward the empty box. "Inside." "The bottom." I looked. At first... Nothing. Then... A tiny reflection. Barely visible beneath the cardboard lining. One guard noticed it too. He reached inside. Pressed against the base. The false bottom shifted. Click. The ballroom echoed with the tiny mechanical sound. Every face turned. The guard slowly lifted the hidden panel. Beneath it... Lay a black USB drive. No label. No markings. Just matte black plastic. Vanessa screamed. "NO!" Before anyone could react, she lunged across the room. Not toward Alessandro. Not toward the fake pregnancy. Toward the USB. Two bodyguards intercepted her instantly. She fought like someone drowning. Kicking. Scratching. Screaming. "Give it to me!" "You don't know what's on it!" "You can't watch it!" That sentence changed everything. Because innocent people don't fear evidence. They fear lies. Guilty people fear the truth. Alessandro took the USB from the guard. For the first time all evening... His hand hesitated. "What is this?" Vanessa stopped struggling. Her shoulders collapsed. Her makeup streaked down her face. When she finally spoke... Her voice sounded empty. "...It's not about me." The ballroom became impossibly still. She slowly lifted her eyes toward Alessandro. "They'll kill all of us." No one laughed. No one even whispered. Because every person in that room suddenly realized... The fake pregnancy... Had never been the real secret. It had only been the lock. The USB... Was the door. And whatever waited behind it... Was terrifying enough to make a woman who had just lost everything... Forget about herself. And start fearing for everyone else. Alessandro looked down at the drive resting in his hand. Then at me. Then at Emma. Finally, he turned toward the head of security. His next order made every armed guard in the mansion reach for their weapons. "Nobody leaves." He slipped the USB into his pocket. "And nobody..." His eyes slowly swept across the terrified faces filling the ballroom. "...uses a phone." Across the room... One guest quietly lowered his hand beneath the table. A hidden message had already been sent. To Be Continued... / Chapter 6 / 8

Chapter 8: Vault 317

Chapter 8: Vault 317

The explosion shook the building like an earthquake.

The walls groaned.

Glass burst inward.

The hallway lights died.

Emma screamed and buried her face against my shoulder.

For one terrifying second...

I thought the entire apartment complex was collapsing.

Marcus was already moving.

"Everyone down!"

A second explosion erupted somewhere below us.

Closer.

The floor tilted just enough to send picture frames crashing from the walls.

Smoke began pouring beneath the apartment door.

Not thick.

Controlled.

Someone wanted us to leave.

Fast.

Too fast.

Alessandro looked toward Marcus.

"Gas?"

Marcus knelt.

Touched the floor.

Shook his head.

"No."

He sniffed the air.

"Military smoke."

His expression darkened.

"They're flushing us out."

Outside...

Car alarms screamed.

People flooded into the street.

Parents carrying children.

Neighbors coughing through the smoke.

Sirens echoed somewhere in the distance.

Chaos.

Exactly the kind of chaos professional killers loved.

Marcus immediately understood.

"They're waiting outside."

Alessandro nodded.

"If we leave with everyone else..."

"...they'll disappear into the crowd."

Emma tugged gently on Alessandro's sleeve.

"Mister Alessandro..."

He knelt without hesitation.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the ceiling.

"They're walking."

Everyone froze.

Marcus raised one finger.

Silence.

At first...

Nothing.

Then...

Footsteps.

Soft.

Measured.

Not firefighters.

Not panicked residents.

Someone was moving across the apartment directly above us.

One...

Two...

Three...

Then they stopped.

Exactly over Emma's bedroom.

Marcus whispered,

"They know where we are."

A sharp metallic click echoed from the hallway.

Marcus's eyes widened.

"Flashbang!"

He threw himself toward us.

A blinding white light exploded outside the apartment.

The concussion slammed the front door off its hinges.

Black-clad figures poured through the smoke.

Night-vision goggles.

Silenced rifles.

No insignias.

No hesitation.

The Raven Syndicate had finally shown itself.

Marcus fired first.

One attacker dropped before crossing the doorway.

The second rolled behind the kitchen counter.

Suppressors coughed instead of roared.

Bullets punched through drywall.

Furniture exploded into splinters.

Alessandro grabbed Emma and pulled her behind an overturned dining table.

I crawled beside them, my heartbeat deafening.

Victor ducked behind the sofa.

"This wasn't an evacuation..."

Marcus reloaded.

"It was an ambush."

One attacker shouted,

"Take the child!"

Not Alessandro.

Not the USB.

Emma.

My blood froze.

Two masked men rushed directly toward us.

Marcus intercepted the first with a brutal shoulder strike.

The second raised his rifle.

Before he could fire...

A crystal vase smashed across his face.

Alessandro.

His tuxedo was torn.

Blood stained one sleeve.

But his expression never changed.

The attacker staggered.

Marcus finished him with a single punch.

Emma stared at Alessandro.

"You threw Mommy's flowers."

For the briefest moment...

He almost smiled.

"I'm buying her better ones."

Then...

Everything stopped.

A laser sight appeared on Emma's forehead.

A sniper.

Marcus shouted,

"DOWN!"

Alessandro didn't hesitate.

He wrapped his own body around Emma.

The rifle fired.

Glass exploded behind them.

The bullet tore through Alessandro's shoulder instead of Emma's head.

He grunted.

Nothing more.

Blood spread across his black jacket.

Emma looked up.

"Mister Alessandro..."

"You got hurt."

He pressed one hand over the wound.

"I'm alright."

He wasn't.

Blood dripped steadily onto the wooden floor.

Marcus grabbed Alessandro.

"We have to move!"

"No."

Alessandro looked toward the bedroom.

"The key."

I blinked.

"What?"

"The vault key."

Emma still held it.

If they escaped without it...

Everything Daniel had died protecting might disappear forever.

Marcus understood immediately.

"I'll cover you."

Gunfire erupted again.

Marcus emptied another magazine into the hallway.

Victor helped Alessandro stagger toward Emma's room.

Smoke thickened.

Visibility dropped.

Inside the bedroom...

The black teddy bear still lay on the bed.

Emma suddenly pointed beneath it.

"There."

I pulled away the blanket.

A small metal box had been taped beneath the bedframe.

Marcus shouted from outside,

"Hurry!"

Alessandro ripped the box free.

Inside...

Another envelope.

Addressed in Daniel's handwriting.

For Alessandro Moretti.

He opened it immediately.

One page.

Only one sentence.

The truth begins inside Vault 317. Trust no one wearing the Raven.

Attached beneath the note...

A folded map of lower Manhattan.

One location circled in red.

Grand Dominion Bank.

Marcus burst into the room.

"We're out of time!"

The attackers were regrouping.

More footsteps echoed up the stairwell.

Too many.

Marcus glanced out the broken window.

"There's another way."

Firefighters had extended a rescue ladder to the building's opposite side.

Residents were already climbing down.

Alessandro shook his head.

"They'll be watching."

Marcus smiled grimly.

"Exactly."

He reached into his vest.

Pulled out four smoke grenades.

"What are you doing?"

"Making them guess."

Seconds later...

Dense gray smoke flooded every room.

The attackers fired blindly.

Visibility vanished.

Marcus led us through a hole blasted into the neighboring apartment.

Then another.

And another.

We crossed three apartments before reaching the opposite stairwell.

No one followed.

Not immediately.

By the time the smoke cleared...

We were already disappearing into the maze of fire escapes.

Twenty minutes later...

An abandoned warehouse overlooked the East River.

Marcus finally allowed everyone to stop.

Alessandro leaned against a concrete pillar.

His shirt was soaked with blood.

Victor examined the wound.

"The bullet went through."

"No major artery."

"You need a hospital."

Alessandro shook his head.

"We don't have time."

Emma quietly walked over.

She placed her tiny hand over his bandaged shoulder.

"My mommy kisses my boo-boos."

Without waiting for permission...

She kissed the edge of the bandage.

The hardened billionaire closed his eyes for a second.

Not from pain.

From something else.

Something he hadn't allowed himself to feel in years.

Marcus's satellite phone vibrated.

He answered.

His face slowly lost all color.

"What happened?"

No one spoke.

Marcus lowered the phone.

"The Grand Dominion Bank..."

"...was robbed."

Victor frowned.

"Impossible."

Marcus looked at Alessandro.

"Not robbed for money."

He swallowed.

"Vault 317..."

"...was emptied."

Silence.

Then Marcus added one final sentence.

"The robbery happened..."

"...two hours before Daniel's letter told us to go there."

Everyone stared at the envelope.

Someone...

Had known about the key...

Before we did.

And that meant only one thing.

The Raven Syndicate...

May you like

Had someone standing beside us.
