Chapter 5: The Betrayal Inside Sterling House

Chapter 5: The Betrayal Inside Sterling House

The message remained on Alexander Sterling's desk for almost an hour.

He did not move.

He did not call anyone.

He simply stared at the handwritten words.

"The truth you seek is not hidden in the past."

"It is hidden in the person you trust most."

A person.

Not a place.

Not a document.

Not an enemy.

A person.

That was what disturbed him.

Because Alexander had spent twenty years believing the danger came from outside.

From competitors.

From corrupt businessmen.

From people who wanted the Sterling empire destroyed.

But the message suggested something much worse.

The enemy had been close.

Very close.

Someone who had stood beside him.

Someone who had earned his trust.

The billionaire leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

Images from his childhood returned.

His father laughing at dinner.

His mother working late into the night.

The employees who had protected the family during difficult years.

And one person who had always been there.

Adrian Vale.

But Adrian was dead.

Or at least...

Everyone believed he was.

Alexander opened the old photograph again.

His fingers stopped on one person.

Richard Ashford.

The man who had just watched his daughter humiliate Eleanor.

The man who knew about Adrian.

The man who looked terrified when the past returned.

A question formed in Alexander's mind.

What exactly was Richard hiding?

Sterling Private Archives

The Sterling family's private archive was hidden beneath the main mansion.

Few people knew it existed.

Even fewer had permission to enter.

It contained decades of company history.

Old contracts.

Financial records.

Personal letters.

Secrets.

Alexander entered the archive alone.

The security door closed behind him.

Rows of shelves stretched into the darkness.

He walked toward a specific section.

1998 - Aurora Estate Project

He removed the files.

But something was wrong.

The folder was incomplete.

Several pages were missing.

Alexander frowned.

Someone had removed them.

Recently.

He checked the security records.

His eyes narrowed.

The archive had been accessed three days ago.

By someone with authorized access.

Someone inside Sterling.

He checked the name.

His expression changed.

The person who entered the archive was:

Eleanor Sterling.

Sterling Mansion

"Mother."

Alexander placed the security report on the table.

Eleanor looked at it.

She did not seem surprised.

That alone told him everything.

"You entered the archive."

"Yes."

"You removed documents."

"Yes."

Alexander stared at her.

"Why?"

For several seconds, Eleanor said nothing.

Then she answered:

"Because some truths destroy more than they repair."

Alexander felt anger rising.

"You spent twenty years protecting me from the truth."

"I spent twenty years protecting you from becoming your father."

That sentence stopped him.

"My father?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"Your father was a good man."

A pause.

"But good men can become consumed by revenge."

Alexander looked away.

"You think I can't handle the truth?"

"No."

Her voice softened.

"I think you can."

Another pause.

"That's exactly why I'm afraid."

Alexander looked back.

His mother rarely admitted fear.

"What are you hiding?"

Eleanor's eyes became heavy.

"The night your father died..."

She stopped.

"Someone helped Adrian."

Alexander froze.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked toward the window.

"I don't know."

"Mother."

"I know it was someone inside our circle."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Then why hide the files?"

"Because the missing pages contain a name."

"What name?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"The person who betrayed your father."

Silence.

Alexander slowly understood.

She wasn't protecting a secret.

She was protecting him from knowing who it was.

Ashford Corporation

Victoria Ashford walked through the headquarters like a storm.

Employees immediately stepped aside.

Normally, she enjoyed that.

Today, she hated it.

Because every person looking at her reminded her of last night.

The humiliation.

The whispers.

The moment Alexander Sterling made her powerless.

She entered her father's office without knocking.

"We need to fight back."

Richard did not look up.

"Against whom?"

"Sterling."

Her father sighed.

"No."

Victoria frowned.

"No?"

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Richard finally looked at her.

"Alexander Sterling is not your enemy."

Victoria laughed.

"After what happened?"

Richard stood.

"You embarrassed his mother."

"I didn't know who she was."

"Exactly."

His voice became sharp.

"You thought she was nobody."

Victoria became quiet.

Because that was true.

Richard walked toward the window.

"Your biggest mistake wasn't pushing her wheelchair."

Victoria looked confused.

"Then what was it?"

"You revealed who you are."

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Richard continued.

"People can forgive mistakes."

He turned.

"But they never forget cruelty."

Victoria looked away.

For the first time, she wondered if her father was disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

That was worse.

The Hidden Meeting

That night, Richard Ashford entered an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

He arrived alone.

No bodyguards.

No assistants.

No security.

Because some meetings were too dangerous to leave evidence.

The warehouse lights flickered.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"You look older."

Richard stopped.

A man stepped forward.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

A face that belonged in the past.

Adrian Vale.

Alive.

Richard stared.

"I saw you die."

Adrian smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"You saw what I wanted you to see."

Richard's face hardened.

"Why are you back?"

Adrian walked closer.

"Because twenty years ago, I lost everything."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"Lost everything?"

"You almost destroyed an entire family."

Adrian's expression remained calm.

"Almost?"

A strange silence followed.

Richard realized something.

Adrian wasn't here to argue.

He was here because he believed he had won.

"What do you want?"

Adrian looked at him.

"The Sterling empire."

Richard shook his head.

"Impossible."

"Nothing is impossible."

Adrian handed him a folder.

Richard opened it.

His face slowly changed.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Proof.

Proof that could destroy both families.

"What is this?"

Adrian smiled.

"The truth."

Richard looked up.

"You can't use this."

"Why not?"

"Because it destroys you too."

Adrian laughed softly.

"Richard..."

He stepped closer.

"That's where you're wrong."

A pause.

"I have spent twenty years preparing."

The Sterling Family Dinner

That evening, Alexander sat across from Eleanor.

Neither spoke much.

The weight of the past filled the room.

Finally, Eleanor broke the silence.

"There is someone you need to meet."

Alexander looked up.

"Who?"

"My former assistant."

"Why?"

"Because she knows what happened that night."

Alexander narrowed his eyes.

"You said nobody knew."

"I said nobody told the truth."

A pause.

"What is her name?"

Eleanor looked toward the doorway.

The door opened.

A woman entered.

Around fifty years old.

Carrying an old leather bag.

Her expression was nervous.

But determined.

Alexander stood.

The woman looked at him.

"I'm sorry I waited so long."

Alexander said nothing.

She continued.

"Your father saved my life."

A pause.

"And I spent twenty years hiding the truth."

Alexander's eyes hardened.

"What truth?"

The woman opened her bag.

Inside was a small recording device.

An old one.

Almost forgotten.

She placed it on the table.

"This."

She looked at Eleanor.

"Contains the last conversation between your father and Adrian Vale."

Alexander stared.

The room became silent.

Because everyone understood.

The past was no longer buried.

It was coming back.

And this time...

It had a voice.

The woman pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a man's voice appeared.

Alexander recognized it immediately.

His father's voice.

"Adrian... I know what you did."

A second voice answered.

Adrian.

"You should have stayed quiet."

Then his father's final words:

"If anything happens to me..."

A pause.

"Find Eleanor."

The recording stopped.

Alexander stood frozen.

Because there was one thing he finally understood.

His father's death was not an accident.

May you like

It was a warning.

And someone had spent twenty years making sure that warning was forgotten.
