Chapter 3: The Secret Buried Twenty Years Ago

Chapter 3: The Secret Buried Twenty Years Ago

The Aurelia Palace had never felt so cold.

Not because the temperature had changed.

Not because the winter wind outside had grown stronger.

The cold came from the silence.

A room full of powerful people had suddenly become a room full of witnesses.

Everyone could feel it.

Something much bigger than a public humiliation was unfolding.

The confrontation between Victoria Ashford and Eleanor Sterling had been nothing more than a spark.

The real fire was hidden underneath.

Richard Ashford stood near the entrance, his face carefully controlled.

But Alexander Sterling noticed everything.

The slight tension in his jaw.

The way his fingers tightened around his walking cane.

The way his eyes avoided Eleanor.

Those small details revealed a truth that Richard desperately wanted to hide.

He knew.

He remembered.

And he was afraid.

"Alexander," Richard said quietly, forcing a calm expression.

"This is neither the time nor the place."

Alexander looked at him.

"You're right."

A pause.

"This place is too beautiful for ugly truths."

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Victoria looked between the two men.

She hated feeling confused.

Her entire life, she had always known what to do.

Charm people.

Threaten people.

Use her family's reputation.

But tonight, none of those weapons worked.

Because Alexander Sterling was not playing the same game.

"Dad," Victoria whispered.

"What is he talking about?"

Richard did not answer.

That scared her more than anything.

Her father always had an answer.

Always.

Even when businesses collapsed.

Even when competitors attacked.

Even when scandals appeared.

Richard Ashford always knew how to control the situation.

But now...

He looked like a man standing in front of a ghost.

Eleanor Sterling watched him silently.

Twenty years had passed.

Twenty years since the night that changed everything.

The night she lost someone she loved.

The night the Sterling family almost collapsed.

The night the Ashford family rose.

Coincidence?

No.

Not according to Eleanor.

She remembered every detail.

Every face.

Every lie.

Every betrayal.

And tonight, after two decades of silence...

She had finally seen the person connected to that night.

Not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

The daughter.

Victoria.

A younger version of the same arrogance.

The same belief that wealth could erase consequences.

"Eleanor," Richard said.

His voice lowered.

"Whatever happened years ago, our children have nothing to do with it."

For the first time, Eleanor looked directly at him.

"Nothing?"

The single word carried decades of pain.

Richard looked away.

"You know what I mean."

"No."

Her voice remained gentle.

"But I know what you want."

Everyone listened.

"You want the past to stay buried."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Some things are better left forgotten."

Alexander stepped forward.

"No."

His voice cut through the room.

"Some things are only buried because someone is afraid they will be discovered."

The guests exchanged nervous looks.

Nobody knew the details.

But everyone knew enough.

A secret involving two billionaire families could shake the entire city.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"Can someone explain what is happening?"

Nobody answered.

Her frustration grew.

"Why is everyone acting like I committed some kind of crime?"

Alexander turned toward her.

"Because tonight showed something."

Victoria looked at him.

"What?"

"You believe people have value based on what they own."

He glanced at Emily.

"But my family learned a long time ago that character matters more than status."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"So this is about morality now?"

"No."

Alexander's eyes became sharp.

"This is about consequences."

Before Victoria could respond, Eleanor spoke.

"Alexander."

He stopped.

His mother looked toward the exit.

"Take me home."

Everyone was surprised.

After everything, she wanted to leave?

Victoria almost smiled.

Maybe she was escaping.

Maybe the Sterling family did not have anything.

Maybe this was all intimidation.

But then Alexander nodded.

"Of course."

As he pushed Eleanor's wheelchair toward the exit, she stopped beside Emily.

The young maid immediately stepped back.

"Thank you."

Emily looked confused.

"For what?"

Eleanor smiled.

"For reminding everyone tonight that kindness still exists."

Then she turned to Alexander.

"Make sure she gets home safely."

Alexander nodded.

"I will."

Victoria watched them leave.

But something bothered her.

The way everyone looked at Eleanor.

Not with pity.

With respect.

She had spent years believing power came from showing people how important you were.

Yet Eleanor had entered quietly.

Sat quietly.

Spoken quietly.

And still controlled the entire room.

That terrified Victoria.

Later That Night

The Ashford mansion was usually filled with elegance.

Expensive paintings.

Rare sculptures.

Golden decorations.

A house designed to announce wealth.

But tonight, it felt like a prison.

Victoria walked into the living room.

Her father stood near the window.

Still.

Silent.

She had never seen him like this.

"Dad."

No response.

"Dad, tell me what happened."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Do you understand who Eleanor Sterling is?"

Victoria rolled her eyes slightly.

"Obviously."

"No."

His voice became serious.

"You don't."

He turned around.

"Because if you did, you would never have spoken to her."

Victoria became irritated.

"She was just an old woman in a wheelchair."

The second she said it...

Richard's expression changed.

Not anger.

Disbelief.

"That is exactly why you lost."

Victoria frowned.

"What?"

"You looked at her appearance."

He walked closer.

"You saw weakness."

A pause.

"And you never thought about what was hidden underneath."

Victoria remained silent.

Richard poured himself a drink.

His hand shook slightly.

A detail she had never seen before.

"Dad..."

"What happened twenty years ago?"

Richard froze.

The question had finally arrived.

The question he had avoided.

Victoria stepped closer.

"I deserve to know."

Richard looked at his daughter.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

"Twenty years ago, before Alexander became the head of Sterling International..."

He stopped.

"Before your grandfather died..."

Victoria listened carefully.

"There was a business project called The Aurora Estate."

She knew the name.

Everyone did.

The Aurora Estate was one of the most successful luxury developments in the country.

A project that transformed Sterling International into a global empire.

But nobody knew how close it came to failure.

"Your grandfather wanted that project."

Richard's voice became quieter.

"And the Sterling family refused to sell."

Victoria frowned.

"So?"

Richard looked at the floor.

"So someone decided they would destroy Sterling instead."

The room became silent.

Victoria's heart slowed.

"Who?"

Richard did not answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Someone from our family."

Victoria stared.

"What?"

"The person responsible died years ago."

"But Eleanor knows?"

Richard looked toward the window.

"Yes."

"How?"

A long silence.

Then Richard said something that made Victoria's blood run cold.

"Because she was there."

Sterling Residence

Across the city, Alexander pushed his mother's wheelchair through the quiet hallway.

Eleanor looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"You knew this day would come."

Alexander spoke softly.

She smiled.

"I knew the truth would eventually become impatient."

Alexander stopped.

"Why didn't you tell me everything?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"Because revenge changes people."

His expression darkened.

"You think I want revenge?"

"I think you want justice."

A pause.

"But there is a thin line between them."

Alexander looked away.

For years, he had searched for answers.

For years, he believed his father's death was caused by bad luck.

A business failure.

A tragic accident.

But Eleanor knew differently.

And she had kept the truth hidden.

"Mother."

He finally asked the question he had avoided.

"Did Richard Ashford kill my father?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

The question hurt.

Because she knew the answer.

But before she could respond...

The lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Alexander immediately moved in front of his mother.

A security alarm began ringing.

Then...

A phone on the table started vibrating.

Unknown number.

Alexander answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

"You should have left the past buried."

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"Who is this?"

The voice laughed softly.

"Someone who remembers what your mother wants everyone to forget."

Then the call ended.

Alexander stared at the phone.

Eleanor's face had changed.

She recognized something.

A sound.

A phrase.

A memory.

"What did he say?"

Alexander looked at her.

"That we should have left the past buried."

Eleanor whispered:

"Impossible..."

"What?"

She looked toward the darkness.

Her voice trembling for the first time.

"Because the only person who ever said those words..."

May you like

A pause.

"...was supposed to be dead."
