Chapter 2: A Home Between Heartbeats

At the hospital, nurses examined both children.

Leo was underweight but stable.

Lucy had cuts on her feet, signs of malnutrition, and exhaustion hidden beneath remarkable courage.

When the social workers arrived, Daniel found himself unable to walk away.

He checked on them during every break.

He brought Lucy crayons.

He learned that Leo laughed whenever someone made funny faces.

Days turned into weeks.

Even after finishing his shifts, Daniel returned.

One afternoon, Lucy looked up from her coloring book.

"Do police officers visit everyone this much?" she asked.

Daniel smiled.

"Not always."

"Then why do you come?"

He searched for an answer.

Because he couldn't forget the image of a little girl shielding a baby against the wind.

Because every child deserved someone to come back.

"Because I care about what happens to you," he finally said.

Lucy's eyes filled with uncertainty.

"People leave," she whispered.

Daniel remained silent for a moment before replying.

"Sometimes they do."

Then he looked directly at her.

"But sometimes they stay."

Months later, after completing training sessions, evaluations, interviews, and mountains of paperwork, Daniel made the decision that had quietly taken root in his heart from the day they first met.

He applied to become their foster parent.

When he told Lucy, she stared at him in disbelief.

"You mean... with you?"

Daniel nodded.

"If that's what you want."

Lucy glanced down at Leo, then back at Daniel.

"Will we stay together?"

"Always," he answered.

May you like

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

"Then yes," she whispered. "I want that."
