Chapter 2: A Home Between Heartbeats
Chapter 1: The Promise in the Patrol Car
Daniel carefully removed his jacket and wrapped it around Lucy's thin shoulders.
"You must be freezing," he said.
Lucy instinctively tightened her hold on Leo.
"I can carry him for a while if you'd like," Daniel offered.
Her small body stiffened immediately.
"No," she answered quickly. "I have to keep him safe."
The certainty in her voice startled him.
Five years old.
Five years old, yet speaking with the determination of someone much older.
Daniel nodded respectfully.
"Okay," he said. "Then we'll keep him safe together."
He guided Lucy toward the patrol car. She hesitated before stepping inside, glancing nervously at the flashing lights.
"Are you taking us away?" she asked.
Daniel looked at her through the open door.
"I'm taking you somewhere warm."
For the first time since he had found her, Lucy's expression softened.
As they drove, Daniel learned pieces of a heartbreaking story.
Their mother had died several months earlier after a long illness. Their father had disappeared even before Leo was born. Since then, Lucy had survived by collecting bottles and scraps from trash bins. An elderly woman from the neighborhood occasionally shared bread with them, but she had recently moved away.
"Did anyone help you?" Daniel asked quietly.
Lucy shook her head.
"I had Leo," she said simply.

Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
No child should ever have to say those words.
