Chapter 5: The Father She Never Knew

For several seconds, nobody in the hotel lobby breathed.
The words remained hanging in the air.
“Your real father.”
A sentence powerful enough to destroy everything Lily thought she knew.
She stared at the photograph in her hands.
The image was old, but clear enough.
Her mother, Clara Morgan, stood beside a man Lily had never seen before.
They were smiling.
Not a forced smile.
Not the kind people showed for cameras.
A genuine smile.
A smile Lily recognized.
The same smile her mother had in old memories.
The same smile she had when she played music.
The same smile she had when she talked about a future that never came.
But the man beside her…
That man was not Adrian Vale.
Lily slowly looked up.
“Who is he?”
Nobody answered.
The silence itself became an answer.
Adrian looked like someone had taken the ground from beneath his feet.
Victor watched carefully.
Almost as if he had been waiting fifteen years for this exact moment.
“Adrian,” Lily said quietly.
Her voice was different now.
The anger was gone.
The disappointment was replaced by something much worse.
Confusion.
“Who is he?”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
His lips parted.
But no words came out.
Because the truth was complicated.
And complicated truths had a habit of hurting everyone involved.
Finally, he whispered:
“His name was Daniel Cross.”
Lily waited.
“And?”
Adrian looked down.
“And he was someone your mother knew before me.”
The crowd exchanged confused looks.
Lily frowned.
“Before you?”
“Yes.”
“So why did Victor say he was my real father?”
Adrian looked at Victor.
A warning passed between them.
But Victor only smiled.
“Because Adrian knows the truth.”
Lily turned back.
“Tell me.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
For years, he had avoided this conversation.
Not because he did not know the answer.
Because he knew exactly how much pain it would create.
“Your mother met Daniel when she was eighteen.”
He paused.
“They were young.”
Lily listened.
“They loved each other.”
A strange feeling moved through her.
Because she had spent her entire life imagining a father she never met.
She imagined someone powerful.
Someone who left.
Someone who abandoned her.
But now…
Maybe the story was different.
“What happened?”
Adrian looked toward the rain-covered windows of the hotel.
“Daniel died before you were born.”
The room became quiet.
Lily froze.
“Died?”
Adrian nodded.
“He was a musician too. A talented one.”
He looked at the piano.
“Clara and Daniel created music together before she ever met me.”
Lily looked at the photograph again.
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
“Then why did my mother tell me about you?”
That question hurt Adrian.
Because he knew the answer.
“Because I was there when she needed someone.”
Lily looked at him.
Adrian continued.
“After Daniel died, Clara was alone. She was pregnant with you. She had lost the person she loved.”
His voice became softer.
“I met her during that time.”
A pause.
“She was broken.”
“And you fixed her?”
Adrian looked away.
“No.”
The honesty surprised her.
“I tried.”
A moment passed.
“But I could never replace Daniel.”
The words were painful.
But they sounded real.
For the first time that night, Lily wondered if Adrian’s story was not simply one of betrayal.
Maybe it was also a story of someone who failed while trying to do the right thing.
But that still did not explain everything.
“Then why did you promise to be my father?”
Adrian looked at the letter.
The letter where he had promised Clara he would never leave.
“Because I wanted to be.”
Lily stared at him.
“Wanted?”
Adrian swallowed.
“Yes.”
He took a breath.
“I knew I wasn’t your biological father.”
The entire room reacted.
Even the guests who had been silent gasped.
“But I loved your mother.”
He looked at Lily.
“And I loved you.”
The words hit her.
Because they were exactly what she had wanted to hear.
But they came fifteen years too late.
“You loved me?”
Her voice trembled.
“Then where were you?”
Adrian had no answer.
Because there was no answer good enough.
“I was wrong.”
Lily laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes pain came out as a strange sound.
“That’s it?”
She shook her head.
“I spent years wondering why my father didn’t want me.”
Her eyes became wet.
“I thought maybe I wasn’t good enough.”
The lobby became painfully quiet.
Adrian looked devastated.
“Lily…”
“No.”
She wiped her eyes quickly.
“I don’t need you to feel sorry.”
A pause.
“I need the truth.”
Victor watched the scene silently.
Then he spoke.
“Finally.”
Everyone turned.
Victor stepped closer.
“The truth.”
He looked at Adrian.
“You’re finally admitting it.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor smiled.
“You never told her everything.”
Lily looked between them.
“What else?”
Adrian immediately said:
“Nothing.”
Too quickly.
Victor noticed.
So did Lily.
“What else?”
Adrian remained silent.
Victor answered.
“Your mother was not only investigating my company.”
Lily looked at him.
“She discovered something else.”
“What?”
Victor looked at Adrian.
“Something Adrian wanted hidden.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Stop.”
But Victor continued.
“Clara discovered that Daniel Cross’s death was not an accident.”
The lobby erupted.
“What?”
Lily froze.
Her entire body went cold.
“My father…”
She could barely say the words.
“My father was murdered?”
Victor nodded slowly.
Adrian stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
Victor looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because she deserves the truth?”
Victor smiled.
“No.”
He looked at Lily.
“She deserves all of it.”
Adrian’s voice became angry.
“You don’t care about the truth.”
Victor tilted his head.
“Then tell her.”
Silence.
Lily looked at Adrian.
And she saw it.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Adrian.”
Her voice was quiet.
“What happened to Daniel?”
He looked at her.
The girl he had just met.
The daughter he had never raised.
The child of the woman he had failed.
Finally, he spoke.
“Daniel was investigating Victor.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“And?”
Adrian continued.
“He found evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Adrian looked at Lily.
“Evidence that someone inside Victor’s organization was responsible for several illegal operations.”
Lily’s heartbeat increased.
“And Daniel?”
Adrian’s voice became barely audible.
“He was going to expose them.”
The room waited.
“What happened?”
Adrian looked at Victor.
And this time, there was no fear.
Only anger.
“Someone made sure he never got the chance.”
The accusation was clear.
Everyone looked at Victor.
But Victor did something unexpected.
He laughed.
Not loudly.
Not nervously.
Calmly.
“You still don’t understand.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
Victor stepped closer.
“You think I am the villain because it makes the story easier.”
He looked at Lily.
“But the truth is much uglier.”
Lily stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
Victor reached into his folder.
He removed another document.
But this time, he did not show it to Adrian.
He handed it directly to Lily.
“Your mother kept a secret from both of us.”
Lily looked at the paper.
Her hands shook.
“What is this?”
Victor answered:
“Your birth record.”
She opened it.
At first, she did not understand.
Then she saw the name.
The name listed under father.
Her eyes widened.
Because it was not Daniel Cross.
And it was not Adrian Vale.
It was another name.
A name that neither man expected her to discover.
Lily slowly looked up.
“Who is Thomas Morgan?”
Nobody moved.
Adrian’s face turned completely pale.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Because even Victor had not expected that name to appear.
Lily held the document tightly.
“My mother’s last name was Morgan.”
She looked at Adrian.
“Who is Thomas Morgan?”
Adrian whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Lily frowned.
“My grandfather?”
Adrian looked terrified.
“No…”
A pause.
“Not your grandfather.”
The entire lobby waited.
Adrian continued:
“Your father’s father.”
Lily felt the world shift.
Because the man she had spent her entire life searching for…
May you like
Was not the man she thought.
And the truth about her family was much bigger than she imagined.
