Chapter 10: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For fifteen years, the world believed Isabella Reed was gone.
A forgotten name.
A missing person.
A woman whose story ended on a rainy night when Daniel Cross died.
But the truth was different.
Isabella had not disappeared.
She had been hiding.
Waiting.
Running from a secret that was heavier than any prison.
Inside the dark apartment overlooking the city, she sat at the table and stared at the stolen recorder.
Daniel’s voice was still trapped inside that small machine.
A voice from the past.
A voice that could destroy everything she had spent fifteen years protecting.
She pressed the button again.
Static.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“Clara…”
Isabella closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
She remembered that night.
The last time she saw him.
The last time she saw Clara smile.
The last time everything was still normal.
Before fear.
Before betrayal.
Before death.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
But the room gave her no answer.
Only silence.
Back at the Morgan Estate, Lily stood in the library with Adrian.
The discovery of Isabella Reed had changed everything.
A person everyone believed was dead was alive.
A missing witness had returned from the shadows.
And she possessed the one thing they needed most.
Daniel’s final message.
“We need to find her.”
Lily’s voice was determined.
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
Victor looked at them.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”
Lily turned.
“Then explain.”
Victor hesitated.
That hesitation was becoming familiar.
Every time someone got close to the truth, they became afraid.
“You knew Isabella.”
Victor looked away.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before Daniel died.”
Lily stepped closer.
“What was she?”
Victor remained silent.
“Friend?”
No answer.
“Partner?”
Still nothing.
Then Lily asked the question that changed his expression.
“Enemy?”
Victor finally looked at her.
“No.”
His voice was quieter.
“She was the person Daniel trusted most.”
Adrian frowned.
“Then why did she disappear?”
Victor looked at the old fireplace.
“Because she knew who killed him.”
Silence.
Everyone froze.
Eleanor whispered:
“She knew?”
Victor nodded.
“She was there.”
Lily’s heart stopped.
“She saw it happen?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?”
Victor looked at her.
“Because the person responsible was someone powerful.”
“How powerful?”
Victor’s expression became serious.
“Powerful enough to erase a person from history.”
The next morning, Adrian used every resource available to search for Isabella.
Private investigators.
Security records.
Old company files.
But nothing was easy.
Isabella Reed had disappeared perfectly.
No bank accounts.
No official records.
No public appearances.
It was as if she had never existed.
Except…
Lily found something.
She was sitting in the Morgan archive room, surrounded by old documents.
“Adrian.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“I found her.”
Everyone rushed toward her.
On the screen was an old photograph.
Isabella Reed.
Twenty years younger.
Standing beside Clara.
Beside Daniel.
And beside another person.
Someone they had not expected.
Victor immediately recognized him.
“No.”
Lily looked at him.
“You know this person?”
Victor stared at the image.
The man standing beside them.
The man smiling.
The man who appeared in the background of several old photographs.
“Who is he?”
Victor’s face became pale.
“Marcus Reed.”
Eleanor frowned.
“Reed?”
Victor nodded.
“Isabella’s brother.”
Adrian looked confused.
“Why is that important?”
Victor answered:
“Because Marcus was one of the founders of my investment group.”
Silence.
Another connection.
Another thread.
The web became larger.
Lily looked at the photograph.
“So Isabella was connected to Victor too?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at Victor.
“How many people knew each other fifteen years ago?”
Victor sighed.
“More than you realize.”
Lily shook her head.
“That’s the problem.”
Everyone looked at her.
“You all keep talking like the past is a business meeting.”
She pointed at the photograph.
“These were people.”
She touched Clara’s picture.
“My mother.”
She touched Daniel’s.
“My father.”
Her voice became stronger.
“They were real people who got hurt while all of you were protecting secrets.”
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
That afternoon, they found Isabella’s location.
Not through money.
Not through technology.
Through Clara.
Lily discovered a hidden message inside one of her mother’s old music sheets.
A location.
A small abandoned theater outside the city.
The place where Clara and Daniel first performed together.
The place where Isabella used to work.
When they arrived, the theater looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Dusty seats.
An old stage covered in darkness.
Lily walked slowly inside.
She felt something.
A connection.
This place belonged to her mother.
Then a voice came from behind the stage.
“You shouldn’t have come here.”
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped into the light.
Isabella Reed.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Lily stared.
The woman who held the missing piece of her life was standing right in front of her.
“You’re Isabella.”
The woman nodded.
“Yes.”
“My mother trusted you.”
Pain crossed Isabella’s face.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you disappear?”
Isabella looked at Adrian.
Then Victor.
Then Lily.
“Because I failed her.”
The words surprised everyone.
“I promised Clara I would protect you.”
Lily stepped forward.
“Protect me?”
Her voice trembled.
“By letting me believe my whole family abandoned me?”
Isabella looked down.
“I thought distance was safer.”
Lily laughed sadly.
“Everyone thinks they know what’s best for me.”
A pause.
“But nobody ever asks what I want.”
Isabella accepted the words.
Because she knew Lily was right.
“I deserve that.”
Adrian watched Isabella carefully.
“Where is the recorder?”
Isabella looked at him.
“You know what it contains.”
“Yes.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone became tense.
“No?”
Isabella looked at Lily.
“Because Daniel’s final message was not meant for Adrian.”
A pause.
“It was meant for you.”
Lily froze.
“For me?”
Isabella nodded.
“He knew he might not survive.”
She reached into her coat.
And removed the recorder.
The same one that disappeared from the vault.
Everyone stepped forward.
But Isabella held it tightly.
“Before you hear it…”
She looked at Lily.
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your father knew someone would try to control your life.”
Lily waited.
“He knew people would fight over your inheritance.”
A pause.
“He knew people would use you to destroy each other.”
Lily frowned.
“My inheritance?”
Isabella nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t my mother tell me?”
“Because she destroyed it.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Isabella looked at Adrian.
“Clara didn’t hide your inheritance.”
She looked at Lily.
“She gave it away.”
Lily stared.
“Why?”
Isabella answered:
“Because she knew money was the reason everyone around her became dangerous.”
The theater became silent.
“She chose you over the fortune.”
Lily looked confused.
“So I have nothing?”
Isabella smiled sadly.
“No.”
She handed her the recorder.
“You have something much more valuable.”
“What?”
Isabella looked at her.
“The truth.”
Lily pressed the button.
The recording started.
Static.
Then Daniel’s voice.
But this time…
There was no distortion.
No missing pieces.
Only the final message.
“Lily…”
Everyone froze.
Daniel continued.
“If you are hearing this, then you are old enough to know what happened.”
Lily covered her mouth.
“My daughter…”
A tear fell.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“I need you to understand one thing.”
A pause.
“You were never a mistake.”
The words broke her.
“You were the reason I kept fighting.”
Adrian looked away.
Even Victor remained silent.
Daniel continued:
“The person who betrayed us is not the person you think.”
Everyone held their breath.
Then Daniel said:
“The one responsible for everything…”
Static appeared.
The recording shook.
Everyone leaned closer.
Then the final sentence came through.
A sentence that changed everything.
“...is the person who raised you.”
The recorder stopped.
Silence.
Lily froze.
Her face lost all emotion.
Because the message did not reveal the killer.
It revealed something worse.
Someone from her own life.
Someone she trusted.
Someone who had been protecting her.
Someone who had raised her.
Adrian looked at Lily.
“Lily…”
But she could not hear him.
Because suddenly one thought filled her mind.
May you like
Who raised me?
And the answer terrified her.
