Chapter 13: The Friend Behind the Mask

The recording ended.

But Clara’s voice remained.

It stayed inside Adrian’s mind like a ghost that refused to disappear.

“The person who destroyed our lives is someone you trusted more than anyone.”

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of fifteen years of pain.

Everyone in the room knew what that meant.

The person responsible was not a stranger.

Not an enemy hiding in the shadows.

It was someone close.

Someone Adrian welcomed into his life.

Someone who knew his dreams.

His fears.

His weaknesses.

Lily looked at Adrian.

“You know who she meant.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

And that frightened her more than anything.

Because for the first time, the man who always seemed confident had no words.

“Adrian.”

He walked away from the group.

Slowly.

Like every step became heavier.

“I need to think.”

Lily watched him.

“You have been thinking for fifteen years.”

The sentence stopped him.

She was right.

Thinking had never fixed anything.

Silence had never protected anyone.

It had only allowed secrets to grow.

Adrian turned back.

“There was someone.”

Everyone became silent.

“Someone who was there before everything changed.”

Victor crossed his arms.

“Who?”

Adrian looked toward the old window.

A storm was approaching outside.

“Ethan Cole.”

The name meant something to Victor.

His expression changed slightly.

“Your childhood friend.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily frowned.

“Who is Ethan Cole?”

Adrian took a deep breath.

“The person who knew me before I became Adrian Vale.”

Before the money.

Before the empire.

Before the expensive suits and giant hotels.

There were two young men chasing impossible dreams.

Adrian Vale.

And Ethan Cole.

They grew up together.

Same neighborhood.

Same schools.

Same struggles.

While Adrian dreamed of building companies, Ethan dreamed of changing the world through technology.

They were different.

Adrian was ambitious.

Ethan was brilliant.

Together, they were unstoppable.

When Adrian created his first company, Ethan was the first person to believe in him.

The first person to help.

The first person to say:

“You’re going to make it.”

And Adrian believed him.

More than that…

Adrian trusted him.

When investors rejected him.

Ethan stayed.

When money was running out.

Ethan stayed.

When everyone laughed at Adrian’s ideas.

Ethan stayed.

That was why Adrian never suspected him.

Because betrayal hurts most when it comes from someone who once saved you.

Back in the Morgan Estate, Adrian opened an old company archive.

The documents inside were yellowed with time.

He searched through records from the beginning of his company.

Then he found something.

A signature.

A familiar signature.

His face changed.

“What?”

Lily stepped closer.

“What did you find?”

Adrian handed her the document.

She looked at it.

The paper showed an early company agreement.

A private contract.

One that was never made public.

At the bottom was a name.

Ethan Cole.

“He was my partner.”

Adrian whispered.

Victor looked carefully.

“This contract was created before my investment.”

“Yes.”

“Then why was it hidden?”

Adrian stared.

“I don’t know.”

Lily noticed something.

“Wait.”

She pointed at the document.

“This date.”

Everyone looked.

“This was signed three months before my father died.”

Silence.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Because that meant Ethan knew.

He knew Daniel.

He knew Victor.

He knew everything happening around them.

And he was hiding.

They searched for Ethan immediately.

But like Isabella, he had vanished.

No public records.

No company history.

No recent information.

It was almost impossible.

Almost.

Because Lily found something.

A photograph.

Inside Clara’s archive.

A photograph of a meeting.

Daniel.

Clara.

Adrian.

And Ethan.

All together.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

“The four people who can change everything.”

Lily stared.

“Four people.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Your mother trusted him.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why would he betray you?”

Adrian had no answer.

Because that was the question he feared most.

Not because Ethan might be guilty.

Because if he was…

then Adrian had spent fifteen years defending the wrong person.

That evening, they received a message.

One sentence.

No name.

No location.

Only words.

If you want the truth, come alone.

Attached was an address.

An abandoned research facility outside the city.

Adrian immediately knew.

“This is a trap.”

Victor nodded.

“Obviously.”

Lily looked at them.

“Then why are we discussing it?”

Everyone turned.

She continued.

“Because whoever sent this knows we are looking.”

A pause.

“They want us to come.”

Adrian looked worried.

“You’re not going.”

Lily looked at him.

“You don’t decide that anymore.”

The words hurt.

But he accepted them.

Because she was right.

For fifteen years, adults had made decisions for her.

Tonight, she was making her own.

The abandoned facility stood in the middle of nowhere.

A place that looked forgotten by the world.

Broken windows.

Empty halls.

Old machines covered in dust.

Adrian walked carefully.

Every memory from his past seemed to follow him.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Adrian.”

Everyone froze.

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

“Ethan.”

The lights turned on.

A man stood behind the glass wall.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Ethan Cole.

Lily stared.

“So he is alive.”

Adrian looked at his oldest friend.

“Why?”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“Because I knew eventually you would come here.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Did you kill Daniel?”

Ethan’s expression changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“No.”

Adrian looked surprised.

“Then why disappear?”

Ethan looked down.

“Because I failed.”

“Failed who?”

“Everyone.”

The glass door opened.

Ethan walked out.

He looked at Lily.

And his expression softened.

“You look exactly like Clara.”

Lily remained cold.

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what happened.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

A long silence followed.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“Daniel discovered the truth about Victor.”

Victor immediately stepped forward.

“We already know that.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at him.

“You know the beginning.”

A pause.

“But not the reason.”

Everyone waited.

Ethan continued.

“Victor was not the mastermind.”

The room became silent.

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Victor was working for someone else.”

Lily’s heartbeat increased.

“Who?”

Ethan looked toward Adrian.

“The person who controlled everything.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said the name.

A name nobody expected.

A name that changed the entire story.

“Your father.”

Silence.

Adrian froze.

“My father?”

Ethan nodded.

“Adrian Vale Sr.”

“No.”

“He was the one who started it.”

Adrian stepped back.

“That’s impossible.”

Ethan’s voice became softer.

“I wish it was.”

Lily watched Adrian.

For the first time, she saw him truly broken.

Not because someone attacked his reputation.

Not because he might lose money.

Because the person he spent his life trying to make proud…

was the person who destroyed everything.

Ethan continued.

“Your father and Thomas Morgan made a deal.”

“What deal?”

“Their families would control the future together.”

Adrian stared.

“But why kill Daniel?”

Ethan looked at Lily.

“Because Daniel discovered the deal.”

“And Clara?”

“Because Clara discovered Daniel’s evidence.”

Lily felt cold.

“And me?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because you were the proof.”

“The proof of what?”

Ethan took a folder from the table.

Inside was a document.

A family agreement.

A hidden inheritance contract.

And one final page.

He handed it to Lily.

She read it.

Then her face changed.

Because the document revealed something impossible.

Daniel Cross was not only Lily’s father.

He was the person who legally owned the evidence that could destroy both families.

And Lily…

was the only person who inherited it.

Ethan looked at her.

“Your mother spent fifteen years protecting you because you were never just a daughter.”

A pause.

“You were the key.”

Before anyone could respond, the facility suddenly shook.

A loud explosion came from outside.

The windows shattered.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Someone had found them.

Someone who did not want the truth revealed.

Ethan looked toward the entrance.

“They came.”

Adrian grabbed Lily’s hand.

“Move.”

But Lily looked back at Ethan.

“Who?”

Ethan’s face became serious.

“The person who has been watching all of us.”

A shadow appeared through the smoke.

A figure walked slowly into the facility.

And when Adrian saw the person’s face…

he stopped.

Because the person standing there was impossible.

Someone who should have been gone.

Someone whose death had started everything.

Adrian whispered:

“No…”

Lily looked confused.

“Who is it?”

May you like

Adrian’s voice shook.

“Your mother.”
