Chapter 13 - The Shot That Changed EverythingMy mother fell.

I screamed.
Security tackled Samuel.
The gun skidded across the marble.
I ran to her.
There was blood.
But she was breathing.
The bullet had struck her shoulder.
She looked at me.
“Don't cry.”
“You could have died.”
“I know.”
Samuel was arrested.
The Meridian Circle collapsed.
Within forty-eight hours, the entire city knew what had happened.
But the story wasn't over.
Because Samuel had one final secret.
His files contained an encrypted folder.
The Architect wasn't Samuel.
He had been a lieutenant.
The real Architect was still alive.
And the name appeared on the final document.
Eleanor Vale.
My mother.
I stared at the screen.
“No.”
She looked away.
I turned to her.
“Mom.”
She didn't answer.
“Tell me it's fake.”
She closed her eyes.
“I was the Architect.”
The room went silent.
She explained.
Years ago, when the Meridian Circle became corrupt, she infiltrated it.
She took control.
She used the network to protect our family.
But power changed her.
She eventually ordered actions that destroyed innocent lives.
Daniel tried to stop her.
Samuel discovered the truth.
The conspiracy wasn't simply about greed.
It was about a war between people who all believed they were saving the world.
I stared at my mother.
“All this time…”
“Yes.”
“You weren't trying to destroy the Circle.”
“No.”
“You were controlling it.”
“Yes.”
I walked away.
Everything I believed about her shattered.
Then Amelia appeared.
“Charlotte.”
I turned.
She held another file.
“This isn't the whole story.”
Inside was a recording.
My mother's voice.
But it was dated twenty years earlier.
Before I was born.
She said:
“Daniel doesn't know.”
I listened.
“If something happens to me, Charlotte must never discover the truth about her birth.”
The video ended.
I stared at Amelia.
“What truth?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then my father entered.
He looked at the screen.
His face went white.
“I know.”
He sat down.
“Charlotte…”
I waited.
He swallowed.
“Your mother wasn't your biological mother.”
“I know.”
He shook his head.
“Not only that.”
He pulled out an old photograph.
A woman stood beside him.
A woman who looked almost exactly like me.
“My first wife.”
My stomach dropped.
“She was your biological mother.”
“Where is she?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Dead.”
“How?”
His eyes filled with grief.
“She was killed twenty years ago.”
“By who?”
He looked toward my mother.
I turned.
She was crying.

Then she whispered:
“By me.”
