Chapter 15 - The Table Where It BeganThree months later, the restaurant was full again.

The same restaurant.

The same table.

But everything had changed.

Daniel had been captured two weeks earlier after attempting to flee the country.

Claire was awaiting trial.

Richard Vale had been charged.

Dozens of officials were under investigation.

The financial network had collapsed.

Valerie's company had survived.

Barely.

She had turned over every document to federal investigators.

Then she did something no one expected.

She refused to hide.

She spoke publicly.

She told the truth.

Every part of it.

About Daniel.

About Vale.

About her father.

About Michael.

About Nick.

About how fear had kept her silent for too long.

Michael had returned to town.

He and Valerie were rebuilding a relationship slowly.

Not as if twelve missing years could be erased.

They couldn't.

But forgiveness, they discovered, didn't require pretending the past hadn't happened.

Thomas had changed too.

He laughed again.

He had friends over.

He stopped flinching when someone lifted a hand.

And Nick?

Nick had moved in with his aunt.

He had a real bedroom.

A desk.

A school uniform.

A backpack.

A shelf filled with books.

But every Friday night, he came to the restaurant.

That evening, he walked through the door wearing a blue jacket.

Thomas ran toward him.

"You made it!"

Nick laughed.

"I almost didn't."

Valerie smiled.

"You're late."

Nick looked at the clock.

"Three minutes."

"That's late."

They sat down.

Two plates of spaghetti arrived.

Nick stared at the food.

Thomas nudged him.

"Eat."

Nick picked up his fork.

Then he paused.

"Do you remember the first time I came here?"

Thomas smiled.

"You were terrified."

"I wasn't."

"You were."

Nick laughed.

"Fine."

He looked around the restaurant.

"Everybody stared at me."

Valerie's expression softened.

"They shouldn't have."

Nick nodded.

"But someone looked at me differently."

Thomas grinned.

"Me."

"Yes."

"Because I'm awesome."

Nick rolled his eyes.

"You talk too much."

Everyone laughed.

For a moment, it felt ordinary.

Safe.

Then Valerie noticed something.

A woman had entered the restaurant.

She stood near the door.

Watching them.

Valerie's smile disappeared.

Michael noticed too.

He stood.

The woman approached.

She was older.

Gray hair.

Elegant coat.

She placed an envelope on the table.

"This belongs to Valerie Mercer."

Valerie stared.

"Who are you?"

The woman didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Nick.

Then Thomas.

And whispered:

"Your father asked me to give you this when the war was over."

Valerie froze.

"Michael?"

The woman shook her head.

"No."

She pointed toward Thomas.

"His other father."

Silence.

Valerie opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

Thomas as an infant.

Being held by a man Valerie had never seen.

Behind the photograph were five words.

I NEVER STOPPED WATCHING.

Thomas stared.

Nick looked at Valerie.

Michael stepped closer.

Valerie turned the photograph over.

There was another message.

A location.

A date.

Tomorrow.

And beneath it, one final sentence:

COME ALONE, VALERIE. OR YOUR SON LEARNS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THE NIGHT HE WAS BORN.

Valerie's hands began to shake.

Thomas looked at her.

"Mom?"

She folded the photograph.

She smiled.

But this time, her smile wasn't frightened.

It was determined.

Because one thing had changed forever.

She was no longer the woman who looked away.

She was no longer the mother who believed excuses.

She was no longer afraid of what the truth might cost.

She looked at Thomas.

Then at Nick.

Then at Michael.

And finally at the restaurant door.

"The first time we sat at this table," she said softly, "we thought we were uncovering a secret."

Thomas frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Valerie looked toward the envelope.

"We were only opening the first one."

Outside, a black car waited across the street.

Its engine was running.

And inside the darkened vehicle, someone was watching the restaurant.

Someone who had been watching them for years.

May you like

Someone who knew exactly how this story had begun.

And who was finally ready to reveal how it would end.
