Chapter 13 - The Original AgreementValerie couldn't stop thinking about the photograph.

Her father.
Richard Vale.
The documents.
The secret company accounts.
Everything she had believed about her childhood was suddenly unreliable.
Michael sat beside her at the police station.
"He told me once," Michael said quietly.
"Who?"
"Your father."
"What did he say?"
"That he owed Vale a debt."
Valerie shook her head.
"My father was a respectable businessman."
Michael looked at her.
"Respectable people can still make terrible choices."
She looked away.
"Why would he owe Vale?"
"Because your father built the financial system Vale later used."
Valerie stared.
"The company?"
"Yes."
Her entire adult life had been built on something she never understood.
Harris entered carrying a box.
"We found this in Vale's office."
Inside was an old tape recorder.
Valerie pressed play.
Her father's voice filled the room.
"Valerie, if you're hearing this, then I've failed."
Her breath caught.
"I made an agreement with Richard Vale."
Michael closed his eyes.
Her father continued.
"I believed I could control the money."
Valerie whispered,
"No."
"I was wrong."
The recording described a hidden network.
Money moved through businesses.
Politicians were paid.
Records were erased.
Witnesses were threatened.
And when her father tried to leave, Vale threatened his family.
"That was when I realized I had only one choice."
The recording crackled.
"I would disappear."
Valerie's eyes filled with tears.
"So he did disappear."
Michael nodded.
"He protected you."
The tape continued.
"I need you to know one thing. The company was never supposed to belong to Vale. It was meant to be yours."
Valerie froze.
"Yours, Valerie."
She stared at the recorder.
"I built it so that one day you could use it to destroy what I created."
Michael looked at her.
"Your father was trying to leave evidence for you."
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because Vale was watching."
The tape ended.
Valerie sat in silence.
Then she remembered something.
A room in her childhood home.
Locked.
Her father's study.
She had not entered it since she was sixteen.
"Take me there."
Harris looked at her.
"Why?"
"I think there's something he left behind."
They drove to the old property.
The house had been empty for years.
Valerie stood outside her father's study.
She found the key taped beneath the desk.
Inside, everything smelled like dust.
Thomas and Nick waited outside.
Valerie opened a drawer.
Nothing.
Another.
Nothing.
Then she noticed a photograph hanging crookedly on the wall.
She removed it.
Behind it was a safe.
The combination was her birthday.
Inside was a stack of documents.
The top page carried a title:
PROJECT MERCY: ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.
Valerie read the first paragraph.
Her father had signed over control of the company under one condition.
If Vale ever attempted to harm Valerie or her child, the entire financial network would be exposed.
There was one final clause.
Valerie's hands trembled.
"What?"
Michael read over her shoulder.
The clause said:
The biological heir of Michael Mercer shall inherit all remaining assets and evidence.
Thomas.
The company.
The evidence.
Everything had been waiting for him.
Then the door slammed downstairs.
Nick shouted,
"Mom!"
Valerie ran into the hallway.
Thomas was gone.
So was Nick.
The front door stood open.
On the floor was a note.
