Chapter 14 - The Final WitnessPolice flooded the neighborhood.

Valerie couldn't think.

Her son was missing.

Nick was missing.

And Richard Vale was already in custody.

Which meant someone else had taken them.

Harris found a clue.

A receipt.

An abandoned train station.

"That's where they're going."

Valerie didn't hesitate.

They arrived minutes later.

The station was empty.

Then Valerie heard Thomas's voice.

"Mom!"

She ran toward the sound.

Thomas stood behind a metal fence.

Nick was beside him.

A man held both boys.

Valerie recognized him.

The same gray-haired man from the photograph.

Richard Vale's right hand.

Elias.

The man who had killed Nick's father.

"You."

Elias smiled.

"Finally."

Harris raised his weapon.

"Let the boys go."

Elias shook his head.

"Not until Valerie remembers."

"I remember everything."

"No."

Elias smiled.

"You remember your father's story."

He looked at Thomas.

"But you don't remember your own."

Valerie froze.

"What does that mean?"

Elias stepped closer.

"Before your father disappeared, he told you something."

Valerie searched her memory.

A summer night.

Her father kneeling beside her.

A sentence.

Never trust the man who arrives smiling.

She had never understood.

Now she did.

Elias wasn't the one who arrived smiling.

Richard Vale had.

Claire had.

Daniel had.

All of them.

Elias continued.

"Your father hid another recording."

"Where?"

"With the person he trusted most."

Valerie swallowed.

"Who?"

Elias smiled.

"You."

He threw a small box onto the ground.

Inside was a cassette.

Valerie stared.

"My father gave this to me?"

"Yes."

"Then why don't I remember?"

"Because Daniel found you that night."

Her blood went cold.

"He drugged me."

Elias nodded.

"He wanted you to forget."

Valerie looked at Thomas.

The final piece clicked.

Daniel had not simply controlled Thomas.

He had been controlling Valerie for years.

Then Nick suddenly whispered,

"Mom."

Valerie looked.

Nick pointed toward the ceiling.

A camera.

Live.

Harris saw it too.

"We're being watched."

Elias smiled.

"Of course."

Then another voice echoed through the station.

Daniel.

"Hello, Valerie."

She turned.

A screen above the platform flickered on.

Daniel appeared.

Alive.

Valerie stared.

"You escaped?"

He smiled.

"Not yet."

"What do you want?"

"What I've always wanted."

Thomas shouted,

"You!"

Daniel laughed.

"Your mother still doesn't understand."

The screen showed a live video of the old family home.

Then another.

A locked room.

Then a final image.

A young Michael.

And Valerie.

Together.

Before their separation.

Daniel spoke.

"Your mother wasn't the only one who kept secrets."

Valerie stared.

Michael's image appeared again.

Then a document.

A marriage certificate.

Valerie felt the world disappear beneath her.

Her marriage to Daniel.

It had been forged.

She had never legally been married to him.

Daniel had built their entire life on false documents.

But there was one more file.

Thomas's birth certificate.

The father's name had been changed.

Valerie realized.

Daniel hadn't just stolen her money.

He had stolen twelve years of her son's identity.

Harris moved toward the boys.

Elias raised his weapon.

Everything stopped.

Then Nick stepped forward.

"You're forgetting something."

Elias frowned.

Nick smiled.

"I know where the real ledger is."

Elias stared.

"Where?"

Nick pointed toward the station.

"Under your feet."

A trapdoor opened beneath Elias.

Police rushed forward.

Elias fell.

Thomas ran to Valerie.

Nick followed.

The boys were safe.

But the screen above them still showed Daniel.

And Daniel was smiling.

"Congratulations."

His eyes fixed on Valerie.

"You found the truth."

Then he said:

May you like

"Now find me."

The screen went black.
