Chapter 5 - The old Mercer Bank had been abandoned for nearly a decade. The building stood downtown between two newer towers, its windows dark, its marble entrance covered in dust.

Ethan had not returned since his father's death.
He inserted the brass key into box 217.
It clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a black metal case.
No money.
No documents.
Only a flash drive and a photograph.
Ethan picked up the photograph.
His father.
Daniel.
Sarah.
And a fourth person.
Ethan stared.
He knew the man.
Marcus Vale.
His father's closest friend.
A former federal prosecutor.
The man had attended Ethan's father's funeral.
The man had helped Ethan rebuild Mercer's company.
The man had always claimed Daniel Carter had betrayed them.
Ethan turned the photograph over.
There was another message.
Trust the person who has nothing to gain from your inheritance.
He inserted the flash drive into a laptop.
A video opened.
Daniel Carter appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Ethan's hands trembled.
“If you're watching this,” Daniel said, “then they found Lily.”
The video continued.
“I know what you've heard about me.”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Most of it is true. I stole something from your father.”
Ethan frowned.
“But I didn't steal money.”
Daniel took a breath.
“I stole evidence.”
The video shifted.
Documents appeared.
Bank transactions.
Political donations.
Secret contracts.
Payments to judges.
Police officers.
Officials.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Marcus Vale.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His entire body went cold.
“Your father wasn't the head of the operation,” Daniel said. “He was the shield.”
The video froze for a second.
Then Daniel continued.
“The real operation was run by Marcus.”
Ethan whispered:
“No.”
Daniel's voice became softer.
“Your father discovered the truth too late.”
Ethan clenched his fists.
“He tried to stop Marcus. Marcus killed him.”
The video ended.
Silence.
Lily was standing behind Ethan.
“Is that my dad?”
“Yes.”
“Is he alive?”
Ethan didn't know how to answer.
Before he could speak, the lights suddenly went out.
The room went black.
Lily grabbed his hand.
“Mr. Ethan.”
“Don't move.”
A sound came from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Coming closer.
Ethan reached for his phone.
No signal.
The footsteps stopped outside.
Then someone whispered through the door.
“Ethan?”
He recognized the voice.
Marcus Vale.
“Open the door.”
Lily squeezed Ethan's hand.
Ethan looked at her.
Then at the metal case.
Then the second exit at the back of the room.
He whispered:
“Run.”
They sprinted.
A gunshot exploded behind them.
Glass shattered.
They ran down the emergency stairs.
Another shot.
Closer.
Ethan pushed Lily through the side door.
They reached the alley.
A black SUV screeched around the corner.
Ethan pulled Lily behind a dumpster.
The SUV stopped.
Two men jumped out.
Ethan looked around desperately.
Then Lily whispered:
“Mr. Ethan?”
“Yes?”
“I know where the other door is.”
“Where?”
She pointed toward the old church across the street.
“Daddy took me there.”
Ethan's heart slammed against his ribs.
They ran.
Behind them, the men followed.
For the first time, Ethan understood something.
Marcus didn't just want the evidence.
He wanted Lily.

Because somewhere inside that little girl's memory was something Marcus could not afford to let the world discover.
And Ethan had just made himself the only obstacle standing between them.
