Chapter 15 - Nobody spoke.Sarah stood frozen.

Lily's finger remained pointed at her.

Ethan looked between them.

“Sarah?”

She slowly lowered her head.

“I was there.”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You don't know everything.”

The church became silent.

Sarah stepped toward Lily.

“I wasn't working for them that night.”

“I was trying to save you.”

Richard laughed.

“Finally.”

Sarah glared at him.

“You used me.”

“We all used each other.”

Sarah looked at Ethan.

“When Daniel was shot, I ran.”

“I left him.”

“I thought he was dead.”

“But Lily saw me.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You were the fourth person?”

Sarah nodded.

“I was the one who took the ledger.”

Richard looked furious.

“Where is it?”

Sarah smiled.

“Somewhere you'll never reach.”

Richard raised his weapon.

Before he could fire, Daniel tackled him.

The gun slid across the floor.

Federal agents rushed forward.

Richard was arrested.

For the first time in eleven years, the Mercer family's nightmare was finally ending.

But Ethan didn't feel victorious.

He found Lily.

Untied her.

She threw her arms around him.

He held her tightly.

“I knew you'd come.”

“I promised.”

“You always keep promises.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

That sentence cut deeper than any accusation.

Months passed.

The organization collapsed.

Hundreds were arrested.

The Mercer empire was dismantled.

Ethan testified.

Daniel entered witness protection.

Ava began rebuilding her life.

Sarah returned to the hospital.

And Lily stayed with Ethan.

Not because she had to.

Because she wanted to.

One morning, two years after their first walk, Ethan stood beside his black sedan.

He checked his watch.

7:06 a.m.

Lily walked out of the house.

She was eight now.

Her backpack was bigger.

Her hair was longer.

The glitter clips were still mismatched.

She stopped beside him.

“Mr. Ethan?”

“Yes?”

“Will you walk me to school?”

He smiled.

“You know I will.”

They started walking.

Halfway down the sidewalk, Lily slowed.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Do you still think you're not my friend?”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

“Then what are you?”

He stopped.

For years, Ethan had avoided words like family.

Love.

Home.

They had always felt dangerous.

Now he finally understood why.

Because they meant something.

They gave people the power to hurt you.

But they also gave you something worth protecting.

Ethan crouched in front of Lily.

“What do you think I am?”

She smiled.

“You’re my family.”

His throat tightened.

He stood.

Then took her hand.

“I think you're right.”

They continued walking.

The same two blocks.

The same school.

The same street.

But everything was different.

At the school entrance, Lily hugged him.

“See you tonight.”

“See you.”

She ran inside.

Ethan watched her disappear behind the doors.

Then his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He hesitated.

Answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“You really thought Richard was the last one?”

Ethan's expression changed.

“What do you want?”

The voice laughed.

“Nothing.”

“I'm calling to warn you.”

“About what?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your father didn't have one secret.”

“He had two.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“What second secret?”

The caller whispered:

“Ask Lily who her biological mother really is.”

The line went dead.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

Across the street, the school doors closed.

Inside them was the little girl who had changed his life.

The little girl he thought he had finally protected.

The little girl he had promised never to abandon.

Ethan looked toward the school.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, it wasn't an unknown number.

It was Lily's school.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A frightened voice replied.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes?”

“You need to come here immediately.”

“Why?”

The receptionist hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone came looking for Lily.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Who?”

The woman took a shaky breath.

“She said she's Lily's mother.”

Ethan looked across the street.

And for the first time in two years, the same cold fear returned.

Because Sarah Carter was Lily's mother.

And Sarah was supposed to be sitting inside a federal safe house.

Which meant only one thing.

Someone else had just claimed the little girl's identity.

And whoever she was...

she already knew Ethan's name.
