Chapter 13 - Daniel finally told the truth. The organization had existed before Mercer.

It had controlled banks, shipping companies, construction firms, political campaigns and private security networks.

Daniel had been one of its architects.

Not by choice.

He had built the financial system used to hide the money.

Then he discovered what the money was funding.

Assassinations.

Blackmail.

Illegal weapons contracts.

Political manipulation.

He wanted out.

They wouldn't let him.

So he stole the original ledger.

The one that contained every name.

Every transaction.

Every secret.

“I didn't create them,” Daniel said.

“I helped them grow.”

Ethan stared.

“And Lily?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“She inherited the only legal access to their hidden accounts.”

Ethan frowned.

“Because of her?”

“Because of her mother.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“My family controlled the trust.”

“My father was their banker.”

“When I met Daniel, I didn't know what he did.”

“But after Lily was born, we wanted out.”

Richard laughed.

“You thought you could simply leave.”

Daniel glared at him.

“You killed my family.”

Richard's expression remained calm.

“I gave you one chance.”

“You took it.”

“Then you blamed Marcus.”

Richard smiled.

“Marcus loved power.”

“He deserved the blame.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You killed my father.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he tried to save you.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“Your father was willing to give everything away.”

“The company.”

“The money.”

“The names.”

“He believed you could become better than him.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

Richard stood.

“But you became exactly what I expected.”

“What does that mean?”

“Successful.”

“Powerful.”

“Emotionless.”

“You built an empire.”

Richard smiled.

“And now you understand the price.”

He pointed toward Lily.

“She is the final key.”

“What happens if I give her to you?”

“Everyone walks away.”

Ethan looked at Sarah.

At Daniel.

At Lily.

Then he smiled.

“No.”

Richard frowned.

Ethan pulled out the flash drive.

“I already sent the files.”

Richard's face changed.

“To whom?”

“Every major newspaper.”

Silence.

Daniel stared at Ethan.

“You didn't.”

“I did.”

Richard reached for his gun.

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

Police.

Federal agents.

News helicopters.

Ethan had not sent the files to journalists.

He had sent them to everyone.

A digital dead-man switch.

If he didn't cancel it by morning, every file would become public.

Richard stood motionless.

Then he laughed.

“You think that's enough?”

“What?”

“You still don't know the truth about Lily.”

Ethan's face hardened.

Richard looked at the little girl.

“She isn't Daniel's only child.”

Daniel froze.

Sarah stepped backward.

Lily stared at them.

“What does that mean?”

Richard smiled.

“It means your father had another family.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Richard laughed.

“Ask him about Elena.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel couldn't meet his eyes.

And then Lily asked the question none of them were prepared to answer.

“Daddy?”

“Who is Elena?”
