Chapter 6 - Sadie couldn't move.The man approached.

Every step felt like a memory she had never lived.

“You know who I am.”

He smiled.

“You should.”

“Marcus?”

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

He looked older than her by a few minutes.

But something about him was terrifyingly familiar.

“The last time I saw you,” Marcus said, “you were wrapped in a pink blanket.”

“I don't remember.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

Gabriel raised the crowbar.

Marcus glanced at him.

“You're still alive.”

“Disappointing, isn't it?”

Marcus smiled.

“Very.”

Sadie stepped between them.

“Why did you send him to kill Dominic?”

“Because Dominic deserves to die.”

“He didn't kill my father.”

“I never said he did.”

Sadie frowned.

“Then why?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because he knows who did.”

“Who?”

Marcus walked closer.

“Me.”

Silence.

Sadie's mouth opened.

“What?”

“I killed Daniel Bennett.”

“No.”

“I was twelve.”

“No.”

“He found out who I was.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“He was going to take you away.”

Sadie shook her head.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

He reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small pendant.

Sadie recognized it.

Her father used to wear it.

Marcus tossed it toward her.

She caught it.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

Two babies.

One wore a blue bracelet.

One wore a pink bracelet.

Sadie looked at Marcus.

“Which one am I?”

“Pink.”

“You were blue.”

“Yes.”

“Why keep this?”

“To remember what I destroyed.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“You killed your own father.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I killed the man who tried to expose the truth.”

“Truth?”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea how much blood is underneath Philadelphia.”

He turned to Sadie.

“Your father discovered that our birth wasn't an accident.”

Sadie swallowed.

“What do you mean?”

“We were created.”

“What?”

“Your mother was paid.”

Sadie felt sick.

“By who?”

“The Russo family.”

Gabriel tightened his grip on the crowbar.

Marcus continued.

“They needed a child with compatible blood.”

Sadie stared at him.

“So I was born to save someone?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Marcus smiled sadly.

“Dominic's younger brother.”

She froze.

“But he's dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did they need us?”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Because he wasn't dead when we were born.”

Sadie stared.

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

“Who took him?”

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

“Someone inside the Russo family.”

A gunshot suddenly cracked outside.

Gabriel turned.

Marcus smiled.

“They're here.”

“Who?”

“The people who've been watching you.”

Marcus walked toward the rear exit.

“Come with me.”

Sadie didn't move.

“Why?”

“Because there's something you need to see.”

“What?”

“The room where your father died.”

Marcus opened the door.

Then he looked back.

“And if you don't come with me tonight, Dominic Russo will never tell you what he did in Room 17.”

Sadie froze.

“What's Room 17?”

Marcus smiled.

“The place where your life was rewritten.”

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

Gabriel looked at Sadie.

“We shouldn't follow him.”

Sadie grabbed the pendant.

“Yes.”

May you like

She looked at the door.

“We should.”
