Chapter 4: The Song in the Rain

The drive back from Washington Union Station was silent.
The black laptop rested inside a locked evidence case on the back seat of Detective Samuel Bennett's SUV.
Nobody spoke.
The notebook alone was enough to destroy careers.
More than sixty pages documented secret transactions, shell companies, falsified invoices, and unauthorized transfers totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
But Daniel Harper hadn't hidden the laptop because of financial fraud.
He had hidden it because of what was inside.
And only Emily knew how to unlock it.
Just after midnight, Bennett returned to Fairfax County Police Headquarters.
Captain Melissa Grant was already waiting in the digital forensics lab.
"So?"
Bennett placed the laptop on the table.
"The password belongs to Emily."
Grant rubbed her temples.
"She's six."
"I know."
"We can't pressure her."
"No."
"She's already survived enough."
The room fell quiet.
Daniel Harper had anticipated this moment.
Every clue he left behind required Emily's memory.
Not because she was the weakest witness.
Because she was the one person Richard Vale had underestimated.
Across town, Laura Harper sat beside Emily's hospital-style bed inside the Children's Advocacy Center.
The little girl had finally fallen asleep.
The filthy stuffed rabbit, now preserved inside an evidence bag, rested on a nearby chair.
Laura couldn't stop staring at it.
A nurse entered quietly.
"You should get some rest."
Laura smiled weakly.
"I've been trying for eleven months."
The nurse gently dimmed the lights before leaving.
Rain continued tapping against the window.
A soft rhythm.
Tap...
Tap...
Tap...
Emily stirred beneath her blanket.
Without opening her eyes, she whispered,
"Daddy's singing."
Laura froze.
"What?"
Emily smiled faintly in her sleep.
"He always sings when it rains."
The next morning...
Dr. Naomi Carter met Emily in a colorful therapy room filled with books, puzzles, and stuffed animals.
Detective Bennett waited outside the observation window.
He didn't want to frighten the child.
Dr. Carter placed several crayons on the table.
"Would you draw something for me?"
Emily nodded.
She picked a blue crayon.
Then a gray one.
Finally...
A yellow crayon.
She began drawing a house.
Not the Harper home.
Not the courthouse.
The Vale mansion.
Dr. Carter watched carefully.
"You've drawn the basement."
Emily nodded.
"No."
She pointed lower.
"The room under the basement."
Then she drew something no one expected.
A narrow hallway.
At the end...
A tiny square.
"What is that?" Dr. Carter asked.
Emily answered matter-of-factly.
"The music room."
Behind the observation glass, Bennett frowned.
"There wasn't another room."
Captain Grant looked at the architectural scans.
"We searched everything."
Emily continued drawing.
"There are two doors."
"We only found one."
She shook her head.
"The other door hides."
Grant looked at Bennett.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody knew.
After the drawing session, Bennett finally entered the room.
He sat across from Emily.
No badge.
No notebook.
Just a gentle smile.
"I have something I'd like to ask."
Emily nodded.
He placed the black laptop on the table.
"Your daddy left this."
She immediately recognized it.
"His work computer."
"Yes."
"It needs a password."
Emily looked down.
"I promised."
"I know."
"You promised your daddy."
She nodded.
"He said only honest people."
Bennett smiled.
"That's fair."
Emily studied him for several seconds.
Then asked the question no detective expected.
"Did you arrest Mr. Vale?"
"Yes."
"Did you search under his house?"
"Yes."
"Did you find the room?"
"Yes."
She looked relieved.
"Then Daddy was right."
Bennett leaned forward.
"What was he right about?"
"That somebody would finally believe me."
Emily reached into her pocket.
Laura looked surprised.
"When did you..."
Emily unfolded a tiny piece of paper.
Old.
Folded many times.
She handed it to Bennett.
"My daddy made me practice."
Inside was a child's handwriting exercise.
RainIsMusic
RainIsMusic
RainIsMusic
Repeated dozens of times across the page.
Bennett looked confused.
Emily giggled softly.
"Not spaces."
"No capitals."
"Just like Daddy."
Detective Bennett slowly typed.
rainismusic
The laptop rejected it.
Emily shook her head.
"No."
She pointed toward the window.
Outside...
Rain had begun falling again.
"My whole song."
"The whole song?"
Emily nodded.
"Daddy said I'd never forget."
She quietly began humming.
Laura covered her mouth.
It was the same lullaby Daniel had sung every rainy night.
Emily whispered the words.
"When the rain finds every roof..."
Bennett typed.
Rejected.
Emily smiled.
"No."
"He always counted."
Laura suddenly remembered.
"Oh my God..."
Bennett looked up.
"What?"
Laura laughed through tears.
"Daniel loved music theory."
"He counted beats."
Emily nodded excitedly.
"He said numbers make songs stronger."
Captain Grant immediately understood.
"The password isn't the lyrics."
"It's the rhythm."
Digital forensic analyst Kevin Rhodes replayed an old family video recovered from Laura's phone.
Daniel sat beside a fireplace singing to three-year-old Emily.
He tapped his fingers against the armrest while singing.
One.
Two.
Three.
Pause.
One.
Two.
One.
Three.
Rhodes watched again.
Then again.
Finally...
He translated the rhythm into numbers.
313213...
Emily smiled.
"Keep going."
Five minutes later...
The complete sequence was entered.
The screen paused.
Everyone held their breath.
Then...
The desktop appeared.
No celebration.
Only silence.
Because the wallpaper was a photograph of Emily sleeping with her stuffed rabbit.
Across the image, Daniel had written a single sentence.
If you can see this, I couldn't protect her anymore.
Captain Grant quietly whispered,
"Daniel knew."
Bennett opened the first folder.
Its name was simple.
START HERE
Inside were hundreds of files.
Emails.
Financial records.
Audio recordings.
Hidden surveillance footage.
Then one video file caught everyone's attention.
Its timestamp read:
Four months after Daniel Harper disappeared.
Bennett clicked Play.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
Daniel Harper appeared.
Alive.
Thinner.
His beard had grown.
A bruise darkened one side of his face.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
He took a slow breath.
"...Richard didn't just steal my company."
"He buried something far worse beneath his house."
The room went completely still.
Daniel leaned closer to the camera.
"And if I never escape..."
He glanced nervously over his shoulder.
"...there's another door they haven't found yet."
The video suddenly ended.
Everyone stared at the frozen screen.
Emily looked up from her chair.
"I told you."
May you like
"The music room."
