Chapter 13: The Man in the Chair

No one moved.
The image on the command monitor remained perfectly still.
The elderly man sat beneath a single hanging light, his hands folded calmly in his lap.
"My name..."
"...is Daniel Harper."
Laura Harper's heart nearly stopped.
She stared at the screen through tears.
"No..."
She whispered.
"That's not Daniel."
Detective Samuel Bennett narrowed his eyes.
She was right.
The man had Daniel's eyes.
Daniel's voice.
Even the slight scar above his left eyebrow.
But something was wrong.
He looked nearly thirty years older than he should have.
Captain Melissa Grant raised her weapon as the tactical team slowly entered the room.
"Police!"
"Don't move!"
The old man smiled faintly.
"I wasn't planning to."
Bennett approached carefully.
"Who are you?"
The man answered without hesitation.
"I told you."
"I'm Daniel Harper."
Bennett crouched beside him.
"What year is it?"
The old man's smile faded.
"...2025."
"It isn't."
"It's 2026."
Confusion spread across the man's face.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Nathan Caldwell's voice echoed once again through hidden speakers.
"Time is a fascinating thing."
His tone remained unnervingly calm.
"You measure it with clocks."
"I measure it with memory."
Captain Grant shouted toward the ceiling.
"Show yourself!"
Nathan chuckled.
"Soon."
Bennett continued speaking to the old man.
"What do you remember?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I escaped."
"I reached the chapel."
"Nathan found me."
"He gave me an injection."
His breathing became uneven.
"After that..."
"...everything became dreams."
Dr. Naomi Carter, watching through the secure video feed from Fairfax, immediately spoke into Bennett's earpiece.
"His speech patterns are genuine."
"What do you mean?"
"He believes every word."
"He isn't pretending."
A forensic physician accompanying the raid knelt beside the chair.
She quickly examined the man's pupils, pulse, and skin.
Then her expression changed.
"This isn't natural aging."
Bennett looked at her.
"What is it?"
She gently rolled up the man's sleeve.
Dozens of tiny needle marks covered his arm.
Repeated injections.
Over many months.
Maybe years.
"He hasn't aged thirty years."
She looked horrified.
"He's severely malnourished."
"Chronically sleep-deprived."
"His muscles have wasted away."
"He only looks decades older."
Laura finally found her voice through the live video.
"Daniel..."
The old man slowly turned toward the camera.
His eyes widened.
"...Laura?"
Tears streamed down her face.
"Oh my God..."
He smiled weakly.
"You kept your promise."
She shook her head, sobbing.
"No."
"You did."
Suddenly...
A slow clap echoed through the underground chamber.
Everyone spun toward the doorway.
Nathan Caldwell stepped into the room.
No guards.
No weapon.
Only his immaculate navy suit.
He applauded quietly.
"Beautiful."
"Absolutely beautiful."
Captain Grant immediately aimed her pistol.
"Don't move!"
Nathan obeyed.
Smiling all the while.
"I've waited eleven years for this conversation."
Bennett stepped between Nathan and Daniel.
"You're under arrest."
Nathan tilted his head.
"For which crime?"
"Kidnapping."
"Conspiracy."
"False imprisonment."
"Murder."
Nathan sighed.
"I expected that."
Officer Morales moved to handcuff him.
Nathan calmly raised both wrists.
"I won't resist."
Everyone hesitated.
It was too easy.
Far too easy.
Bennett looked directly at Nathan.
"Why?"
Nathan's smile never faded.
"Because the investigation is already over."
"What does that mean?"
Nathan glanced toward Daniel.
"He found the evidence."
"You found the witnesses."
"You uncovered Project Echo."
He looked almost... relieved.
"I have nothing left to protect."
Bennett frowned.
"Richard killed people."
Nathan nodded.
"Yes."
"You imprisoned children."
"Yes."
"You destroyed families."
"Yes."
Nathan answered every accusation without emotion.
Almost mechanically.
Then Bennett asked one final question.
"Why?"
For the first time...
Nathan's smile disappeared.
He looked toward the old chapel ceiling above them.
"When I was twenty-six..."
"...my daughter disappeared."
Silence.
"The police forgot."
"The newspapers forgot."
"The government forgot."
"But I remembered."
His voice became quieter.
"I became obsessed with memory."
"I believed..."
"...if nothing was ever forgotten..."
"...no child would disappear again."
Captain Grant stared at him in disbelief.
"So you kidnapped children?"
Nathan slowly nodded.
"I became the thing I hated."
The room remained silent.
Even Bennett couldn't speak.
Nathan looked toward Ethan Collins, who had just entered with another tactical team.
"Ethan."
The young man didn't answer.
"I am sorry."
Ethan's voice trembled.
"My friends trusted you."
Nathan closed his eyes.
"I know."
Just then...
Rhodes shouted over the radio.
"Detective!"
"We've got movement!"
"What?"
"Someone's accessing the facility's main servers remotely!"
Nathan's eyes snapped open.
"No..."
For the first time...
He looked genuinely frightened.
Bennett noticed immediately.
"Who's doing that?"
Nathan whispered,
"...Richard."
Captain Grant frowned.
"Richard's in county jail."
Nathan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"He planned for this."
Every monitor inside the laboratory suddenly flickered.
A countdown appeared.
04:59
04:58
04:57
Large red letters flashed across every screen.
DATA PURGE INITIATED
Rhodes' voice came through the radio.
"Every server in the facility is being wiped!"
Nathan looked directly at Bennett.
"If those files disappear..."
"...every remaining victim becomes a number again."
Bennett didn't hesitate.
"Rhodes."
"Can you stop it?"
There was a long pause.
Then Rhodes answered.
"I can..."
"...but I need five minutes."
Bennett looked at the countdown.
Four minutes.
Thirty-one seconds.

The race for the truth had become a race against time.
