Chapter 14: Five Minutes to Save the Truth

The countdown glowed crimson across every monitor in the underground laboratory.
04:30
04:29
Every second echoed through the room like a hammer striking steel.
Detective Samuel Bennett looked from the screens to Nathan Caldwell.
"You built this system."
Nathan nodded.
"I did."
"Then shut it down."
Nathan's face tightened.
"I can't."
Captain Melissa Grant grabbed him by the collar.
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
Nathan pointed toward the nearest terminal.
"When Richard invested in Project Echo, he demanded one condition."
"A dead man's switch."
Bennett frowned.
"A what?"
"If I was ever arrested..."
"...or if this facility was compromised..."
"...every record would destroy itself."
Kevin Rhodes' voice crackled over Bennett's earpiece.
"I've reached the main server."
"But it's encrypted."
"How long?"
"Three minutes..."
"...if nothing goes wrong."
Bennett glanced at the timer.
03:58
Across the room, Ethan Collins stared at the rows of server cabinets.
"I know this room."
Everyone turned toward him.
"I used to clean it."
Nathan looked surprised.
"You remember?"
Ethan nodded.
"You always made us memorize everything."
His eyes moved across the blinking lights.
Then he pointed toward the far wall.
"The backup servers."
Rhodes immediately looked at the facility map.
"There are no backup servers."
Ethan shook his head.
"They're hidden."
"Where?"
He pointed toward a stained-glass panel built into the underground wall.
"The blue bird."
Officer Jenna Morales hurried over.
The stained glass depicted a blue bird in flight, identical to the one that had appeared in every child's drawing.
She pressed gently against the frame.
Nothing.
Nathan suddenly spoke.
"Not the bird."
"The song."
Bennett looked at him.
"What?"
Nathan closed his eyes.
"The children never remembered numbers."
"They remembered melodies."
Ethan's face lit up.
"The chapel bell."
Without another word, Ethan ran toward the massive bronze bell in the central chamber.
He closed his eyes and struck it.
Dong...
The deep note rolled through the underground complex.
Then he struck it again.
A different rhythm.
Not random.
The same rhythm Daniel had once hidden inside Emily's lullaby.
Dong... Dong... Dong...
A low mechanical rumble answered from behind the stained-glass wall.
The panel slowly slid open.
Behind it...
Three untouched server racks.
Completely isolated from the main network.
Rhodes shouted over the radio.
"I've got them!"
"They're offline backups!"
Captain Grant smiled for the first time that day.
"Copy everything."
The countdown continued.
02:41
Rhodes connected portable forensic drives to the hidden servers.
Progress bars filled slowly.
3%
7%
11%
Too slow.
Far too slow.
Nathan stepped beside Rhodes.
"Move."
Rhodes hesitated.
"You'll sabotage it."
Nathan looked him in the eye.
"If I wanted to destroy it..."
"...I would have done it years ago."
Bennett nodded once.
"Let him."
Nathan sat before the keyboard.
His fingers moved with astonishing speed.
Lines of code flew across the screen.
He disabled compression.
Redirected data streams.
Merged redundant archives.
The copy speed doubled.
Then tripled.
Rhodes stared.
"I've never seen anyone type like that."
Nathan smiled sadly.
"I designed the system."
Meanwhile...
Captain Grant received an urgent phone call from Fairfax County Jail.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What?"
She turned toward Bennett.
"Richard."
"What about him?"
"He's gone."
Silence.
"He escaped."
Every officer froze.
Grant continued.
"Someone posing as a federal transport officer presented forged transfer orders."
"They walked him out forty minutes ago."
Nathan whispered,
"I told you..."
"He always has another plan."
Outside the chapel...
A black helicopter appeared over the tree line.
Its markings had been painted over.
No registration numbers.
No lights.
Officer Morales looked through binoculars.
"They're coming here."
"How many?"
"I count six."
Captain Grant grabbed her radio.
"All units, defensive positions!"
Inside the server room...
The progress bar climbed.
61%
68%
74%
Rhodes looked up.
"We're close."
The countdown disagreed.
01:18
Gunfire erupted outside.
The first bullets shattered the chapel windows.
Tactical officers returned fire from behind stone walls.
The helicopter circled overhead, searching for a landing zone.
Bennett looked toward Nathan.
"Is Richard on that helicopter?"
Nathan didn't answer immediately.
Finally...
"No."
"He never comes himself."
"Then who?"
Nathan looked toward the ceiling.
"The people with the most to lose."
A rocket slammed into the chapel bell tower.
The ancient bricks exploded outward.
Dust rained through the underground stairwell.
The massive bronze bell swayed violently but remained standing.
Ethan looked up in horror.
"If that bell falls..."
Nathan finished the sentence.
"...it crushes the backup servers."
The copy reached 92%.
Rhodes clenched his fists.
"Come on..."
Another explosion.
The floor shook.
Cracks spread across the ceiling.
Stone fragments crashed around them.
The bell groaned under its own weight.
Then...
One of its support beams snapped.
The enormous bronze bell began to tilt.
Directly toward the hidden server room.
Everyone watched in horror.
The truth that Daniel Harper had died to preserve...
May you like
Hung beneath several tons of falling bronze.
