Chapter 15 - DaddyThe room became a storm.

Men rushed through the doorway.

Weapons appeared.

Shouts echoed against the concrete walls.

Adrian grabbed Clara.

Evelyn took Mia.

Lucas stood frozen.

Damian faced the armed men.

“Your father is dead.”

The leader stepped forward.

“We know.”

“Then why are you here?”

The man looked at Adrian.

“To finish what he started.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?”

“We are the remaining Vale trustees.”

Elena stared.

“You were supposed to be gone.”

“We were.”

The leader removed his coat.

Beneath it was a scarred family crest.

“The fire didn't destroy the family.”

He looked at Adrian.

“It only destroyed the people who knew the truth.”

Adrian glanced at Clara.

She was crying.

“Daddy.”

He held her tightly.

“I've got you.”

The leader lowered his weapon.

“No one is taking the children.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn't.”

The honesty surprised him.

“But you need us.”

The leader opened a metal case.

Inside were original legal records.

Birth records.

Trust documents.

Medical files.

And one final envelope.

Adrian opened it.

His father's handwriting.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

I need you to understand something.

The people you believed were your enemies were not always your enemies.

The people you loved were not always protecting you.

I lied about your mother.

I lied about Evelyn.

I lied about Jonah.

But I never lied about one thing.

You are my son.

Your children are yours.

Protect them.

No matter what happens.

Adrian lowered the letter.

His father had been a monster in many ways.

But perhaps not every lie had been born from greed.

The final page held one sentence.

The person who ordered the fire was not Daniel Mercer.

Adrian looked up.

Daniel was still alive.

Barely.

“Who ordered it?”

Damian answered.

“Your grandfather.”

Silence.

“The fire was meant to destroy the original family records.”

“And my mother?”

“Your grandfather ordered her death.”

“And Daniel?”

“He disobeyed.”

Adrian stared.

“So Daniel wasn't the one who started the fire.”

“No.”

“Then why did he spend twenty-two years hiding everything?”

“Because he realized the truth could make him powerful.”

Adrian looked at Victoria.

She was still holding the gun.

“Why did you come back?”

She lowered it.

“Because I finally realized protecting my father was destroying everyone else.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

He didn't forgive her.

Not yet.

But he understood.

The police arrived before dawn.

Daniel was arrested.

The trustees handed over the clinic records.

The hidden children were located one by one.

The Vale trust was frozen.

The family empire collapsed into investigations that lasted for years.

Evelyn survived long enough to testify.

Elena told the truth publicly for the first time.

Lucas stopped using the name Mercer.

He took his real name.

Jonah Vale.

Adrian kept Clara and Mia close.

For months, Clara refused to sleep unless he was beside her.

One evening, they sat beneath the old tree behind Vale House.

Mia slept against his chest.

Clara rested her head on his shoulder.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are we staying here?”

Adrian kissed the top of her head.

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

He looked at the old mansion.

At everything his family had lost.

At everything they had survived.

“As long as you want.”

Clara smiled.

Then she looked toward the gate.

“Who is that?”

Adrian turned.

A woman stood there.

She was holding an envelope.

An envelope with the Vale crest.

Adrian stood.

“Can I help you?”

The woman looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My name is Nora.”

Adrian waited.

“I was one of the children.”

His heart stopped.

“One of the seven?”

She nodded.

“I'm number four.”

Clara stood beside him.

The woman handed Adrian the envelope.

“I found this in the clinic.”

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Seven newborn babies.

All alive.

All together.

On the back was written:

There were never seven.

Adrian's stomach tightened.

A second line appeared beneath it.

There were eight.

He looked at Nora.

“What does this mean?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then she pointed toward Mia.

“But the eighth child isn't missing.”

Adrian looked down at his sleeping daughter.

Nora whispered:

“She's right there.”

Adrian's face went pale.

“What are you saying?”

Nora's eyes filled with fear.

“Mia wasn't hidden to protect her from the family.”

She stepped backward.

“She was hidden because the family was protecting itself from her.”

Adrian stared at the baby in his arms.

Mia slowly opened her eyes.

For the first time, he noticed something he had never seen before.

A tiny mark beneath her collarbone.

The same mark appearing on every original Vale document.

The mark his father had spent his entire life trying to erase.

And from the envelope, one final photograph slid onto the floor.

It showed Mia standing beside an elderly man.

A man Adrian had never met.

On the back was a name.

Victor Vale.

Adrian's grandfather.

Underneath it, four words:

I know you're reading this.
