Chapter 1 - The Children Who Stopped the WeddingAdrian Vale had imagined many ways his wedding could go wrong.

He had imagined a storm.

He had imagined a power outage.

He had even imagined his best man forgetting the rings.

He had never imagined two children walking into the wedding hall and calling him Daddy.

The orchestra had just begun the final piece when the doors at the back of the ballroom opened.

Every guest turned.

A little girl stood there.

She looked no older than seven. Her white dress was wrinkled, her shoes were muddy, and her dark hair clung to her wet cheeks.

In her arms was a baby wrapped in a faded blue blanket.

The little girl looked frightened.

Exhausted.

But the moment she saw Adrian standing beneath the crystal chandeliers, something changed in her face.

Relief.

She took one trembling step forward.

Then another.

“Daddy.”

The violinist stopped mid-note.

A glass slipped from someone's hand and shattered against the marble floor.

Adrian stared at the child.

For a second, his mind refused to understand the word.

Daddy?

Victoria stood beside him in her wedding gown.

Her smile disappeared.

The little girl hugged the baby tighter.

“Daddy,” she whispered again.

Adrian looked at Victoria.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“Who is that?” he asked.

Victoria didn't answer.

Instead, she lifted her dress slightly and rushed down the aisle.

“Get them out of here!”

Her voice cracked through the ballroom.

The little girl immediately backed away.

“No!”

Two security men approached.

The child screamed.

“No! Don't take Mia!”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Stop.”

The guards froze.

Victoria grabbed the child's wrist.

“You don't understand,” she hissed. “She's confused. These children wandered in here.”

The girl's eyes filled with tears.

“She knows you,” Adrian said.

Victoria tightened her grip.

“Adrian, please.”

“Let go of her.”

Something in his voice made the entire room go quiet.

Victoria released the child.

She immediately ran toward Adrian.

He crouched.

“What is your name?”

“Clara.”

“And the baby?”

“Mia.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Why did you call me Daddy?”

Clara stared at him.

“Because you are.”

A murmur spread through the guests.

Adrian's mother, who had been seated in the first row, suddenly rose.

Her face looked as if she had seen a ghost.

Clara reached beneath her dress.

She pulled out a thin, old necklace.

Adrian's breath caught.

Attached to it was a silver crest.

The Vale family crest.

He knew it instantly.

His father had worn the same crest on his signet ring.

His grandfather had kept it engraved above the gates of Vale House.

No one outside the family was supposed to possess it.

“Where did you get that?” Adrian whispered.

Clara shook her head.

“A woman gave it to me.”

“What woman?”

Clara reached into a small cloth bag.

She pulled out a faded photograph.

Adrian took it.

The photo showed a young woman standing beside his father.

He knew that face.

His knees nearly gave out.

“Mother?”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

His mother was supposed to have died twenty-two years ago.

Victoria had told Adrian the truth about her death.

She had been killed in a car accident overseas.

There had been no body recovered, she had said.

Only official records.

Only a funeral held in private.

Only grief.

Yet there she was in the photograph.

Young.

Alive.

And standing beside Adrian's father.

Behind her, barely visible, was a house.

Adrian recognized it too.

Vale House.

The old estate that had burned down twenty-two years ago.

He slowly turned toward Victoria.

“You knew.”

Victoria said nothing.

“You knew who these children were.”

Still nothing.

Adrian looked at Clara.

“Who gave you this photograph?”

The little girl lowered her eyes.

“Mommy.”

His heart stopped.

“What's your mother's name?”

Clara looked directly at Victoria.

Then she answered.

“Evelyn.”

A gasp moved through the ballroom.

Adrian knew that name.

Evelyn Mercer.

The only woman he had loved before Victoria.

The woman Victoria had told him was gone forever.

The woman Adrian believed had abandoned him.

Clara suddenly pointed at Victoria.

“She told Mommy you would never come looking for us.”

Victoria's face crumbled.

Adrian took one slow breath.

Then he removed his wedding ring.

The ring struck the marble floor.

“I want everyone out.”

Victoria whispered, “Adrian…”

He didn't look at her.

“The wedding is over.”

But before he could ask Clara another question, an elderly man near the entrance stepped backward.

He had spent the entire ceremony silent.

Now his hands were shaking.

Adrian noticed him.

“Mr. Cross?”

The old family lawyer looked at Clara.

Then at the photograph.

And finally at Adrian.

“There is something you were never supposed to know.”

The room fell silent again.

Adrian's voice was barely above a whisper.

“What?”

Mr. Cross looked toward Victoria.

May you like

“She isn't the only person who lied to you.”

And then the old lawyer collapsed.
