Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the FamilyThomas revealed Victor's final plan.

The ledger alone wasn't enough.
The company needed a legitimate heir.
A public one.
Me.
My identity was valuable because I was the legal bridge between two branches of the family.
Victor wanted me alive.
He wanted me to sign.
Once I signed, the company's ownership would be transferred.
Then Victor would disappear.
Thomas had prepared every document.
The final trap had been waiting for years.
“You thought you were rescuing Evelyn,” Thomas said.
“But you were completing the plan.”
I looked at the papers in his hand.
He smiled.
“Your marriage was never the point.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Then what was?”
“Control.”
Thomas explained.
If Evelyn remained missing, my legal status stayed unstable.
If I remarried, questions would arise.
If I disappeared, the company could be seized.
But if Evelyn returned…
we would automatically become the public heirs.
All Victor needed was for us to appear together.
Then he could force the transfer.
I laughed.
“You spent three years building this?”
“No.”
Thomas looked toward the burned house.
“Your father spent twenty-five.”
Then a shot rang out.
Thomas collapsed.
Victor stood behind him.
He had shot his own man.
The courtyard erupted.
Police surrounded Victor.
He dropped the weapon.
For the first time, he looked old.
Broken.
He looked at me.
“Son.”
I walked toward him.
“You're not my father.”
His face changed.
“No.”
“My mother is.”
“Yes.”
“Evelyn is my wife.”
“Yes.”
“And Bianca is my sister.”
He smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“Then you have nothing left.”
Victor looked at the burned estate.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“I wasn't protecting the family.”
He lowered his head.
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“From the people who built all of this before us.”
That sounded like another lie.
But then he said one final name.
“Margaret.”
My mother.
I turned.
She was standing behind me.
Victor whispered:
“She knows the truth.”
My mother closed her eyes.
Victor was taken away.
Thomas survived.
Bianca was arrested.
Evelyn held my hand.
For the first time in three years, we stood together without fear.
But my mother's expression terrified me.
She asked me to come inside.
Only us.
She closed the door.
Then she said:
“Victor told you I was innocent.”
I nodded.
“He lied.”
Silence.
“What happened that night?”
My mother sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“I was the one who started the plan.”
I stared at her.
“What plan?”
“To replace you.”
My blood went cold.
She explained.
Years ago, she discovered Victor's network.
She realized both men were using their children.
So she devised her own plan.
She created a false identity.
She arranged for Adrian to disappear.
She altered records.
She manipulated the family.
She believed she could destroy the network by controlling the heir.
But when Evelyn discovered the truth…
everything changed.
“She knew too much.”
“Did you order her imprisonment?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
My mother looked at the wedding veil.
“The woman under your floor was never supposed to be Evelyn.”
I felt the room tilt.
“What?”
My mother whispered:
“Evelyn was not the only woman they kidnapped.”
I stared at her.
“There was another bride.”
She opened a box.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman in a wedding dress.
Her face had been scratched away.
On the back was a name.
HELENA.
My mother looked at me.
“She's still alive.”
Evelyn entered the room.
She saw the photograph.
Her face turned white.
“No.”
“What?”
“I know that dress.”
“Whose?”
She looked at me.
“Mine.”
I stared at the photograph.
Then Evelyn whispered:
May you like
“The woman who escaped the floor…”
wasn't me.
