Chapter 12 - The Child in the FireThe voice came from behind the burning library wall.

I ran toward it.

Reed grabbed my shoulder.

“Don't.”

“That's Lily.”

“You don't know that.”

I heard it again.

“Nathan!”

This time I knew.

It was her.

We found a hidden door behind the bookcase.

Smoke filled the corridor.

A child was trapped inside.

Lily.

Older now.

Thin.

Terrified.

She had been locked inside a room beneath the estate.

She was holding a little metal box.

I carried her out.

Outside, she couldn't stop shaking.

Evelyn knelt beside her.

“You remember me?”

Lily nodded.

“You were crying.”

Evelyn began crying too.

“What did you see?”

Lily looked at Bianca.

Bianca stepped backward.

Lily whispered:

“She came.”

“Who?”

“Grandma.”

Evelyn froze.

“Your mother?”

Lily nodded.

“Grandma was fighting with a man.”

“Which man?”

“Uncle Victor.”

Victor stared at her.

“That never happened.”

Lily pointed at him.

“You pushed her.”

Victor went silent.

Evelyn stared.

“Where?”

“Down the stairs.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“She stopped moving.”

Victor's face changed.

“That wasn't your mother.”

Lily frowned.

“Yes, it was.”

Victor looked toward the burning estate.

Then he said:

“Your mother survived.”

Everyone froze.

“So you lied,” I said.

Victor shook his head.

“She survived.”

“Where is she?”

He looked at me.

“She is the reason Evelyn vanished.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Victor revealed the final layer.

My mother had survived the fall.

She had escaped.

But she had taken something.

The original ledger.

Without it, Victor and Richard couldn't control the company.

My mother hid the ledger inside the wedding ceremony itself.

The wedding license.

The one Evelyn mentioned.

The document was not merely legal proof of marriage.

It contained a cipher.

A code hidden in the signatures.

We searched the burning chapel.

The original license had survived inside a metal safe.

We opened it.

A strange sequence appeared.

Numbers.

Letters.

Dates.

Anna recognized the pattern.

“It matches the family cemetery.”

We went there again.

This time we found a hidden grave.

No name.

No marker.

Inside was a box.

The original ledger.

But there was something else.

A handwritten confession.

My father's.

He admitted everything.

The theft.

The identities.

The fake bride.

The kidnapping.

The poisoning.

And one final confession.

He had not been trying to destroy me.

He had been trying to protect himself from Victor.

Because Victor knew the one thing that could destroy them both.

My true identity.

The confession ended with:

IF ADRIAN DISCOVERS THE TRUTH, BURN THE HOUSE.

The fire had been planned.

Someone had expected us to find this.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice.

Old.

Familiar.

My heart stopped.

“Adrian?”

I couldn't speak.

Evelyn grabbed my arm.

The voice continued.

“I have been waiting twenty-five years.”

“Mom?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

The call ended.

I looked at Evelyn.

She was crying.

“She is alive.”

Behind us, Bianca whispered:

“No.”

I turned.

Bianca looked terrified.

“You can't find her.”

“Why?”

“She'll tell you what really happened.”

“What really happened?”

Bianca stepped backward.

“The night your mother disappeared…”

She looked at Victor.

“Victor wasn't the one who pushed her.”

Victor's face went pale.

May you like

Bianca looked at me.

“It was me.”
