CHAPTER 15: THE LAST ORDER

Darkness swallowed the command center.
For several seconds, there was nothing but the sound of breathing.
Then Emily whispered:
“Mom…”
“I’m here.”
“I found him.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Not in the building.”
“Then where?”
Emily opened her eyes.
Her pupils seemed strangely focused, almost as if she were looking at something none of us could see.
“He’s underground.”
My husband stepped closer.
“Where?”
“Beneath the Pentagon.”
My father cursed under his breath.
The President looked at me.
“That’s impossible.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“He built something beneath it.”
The command center suddenly came alive.
One monitor after another switched on.
A map of Washington appeared.
Then the Pentagon.
Beneath it was a network of tunnels.
At the very bottom was a blinking red point.
FINAL DAWN COMMAND NODE.
I stared.
“That's where Ward is.”
My husband nodded.
“Yes.”
The President looked at the countdown.
27:42
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
My husband answered:
“The military receives the order.”
“To kill everyone on the list.”
“Yes.”
The President looked at me.
“How do we stop it?”
I stared at the map.
“We destroy the command node.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if you destroy it, the automated system will assume the command center has been compromised.”
“And?”
“It will execute the order immediately.”
I looked at the countdown.
27:19
“So we can't destroy it.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
My husband looked at Emily.
“We have to make the system believe Ward is the one who ordered the shutdown.”
I looked at him.
“Can we?”
He nodded.
“But we need his biometric authorization.”
I smiled.
“We have something better.”
Everyone looked at me.
“His memory.”
My father understood first.
“Black Lantern.”
I nodded.
“Emily can access it.”
My daughter looked frightened.
“I can try.”
“No.”
I stepped toward her.
“You don't have to do this.”
She looked at me.
“Yes, I do.”
“Emily…”
She shook her head.
“Mom, you spent your whole life protecting me.”
Her voice trembled.
“Let me protect you once.”
I hugged her.
Then whispered:
“Okay.”
She sat at the terminal.
I stood behind her.
My husband began working through the security system.
The President watched.
My father guarded the door.
Gabriel and Michael checked the hallway.
Ethan stood beside Emily.
The countdown continued.
24:51
24:50
My husband suddenly shouted:
“I found the connection.”
I looked over.
“Where?”
“The command node is linked to every military network in the country.”
“Can you isolate it?”
“Not yet.”
“What do you need?”
“Ward's authorization.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“I can get it.”
Her fingers touched the keyboard.
The screen displayed:
MEMORY LINK ESTABLISHED.
Emily suddenly gasped.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“I see him.”
“Where?”
“Inside the command node.”
I leaned closer.
“What is he doing?”
“He's talking to someone.”
“Who?”
Emily's face changed.
“Dr. Sloan.”
I froze.
“She's alive?”
“Yes.”
“What are they saying?”
Emily listened.
Then whispered:
“They're arguing.”
“About what?”
“About me.”
I looked at the screen.
“Can you hear them?”
Emily nodded.
Then she repeated their words.
Ward:
“She was never supposed to be activated.”
Sloan:
“You didn't activate her.”
Ward:
“Then who did?”
Sloan:
“Her mother.”
Ward:
“Victoria is dead.”
Sloan:
“No.”
Ward:
“She's standing in the command center.”
Sloan:
“Exactly.”
I felt a chill.
Ward suddenly looked toward the camera.
As if he could see us.
Then he smiled.
Emily opened her eyes.
“He knows we're here.”
The screen went black.
Then Ward appeared.
“Hello, Victoria.”
I stepped forward.
“It's over.”
Ward laughed.
“Not yet.”
“You've lost the archive.”
“Yes.”
“You've lost the President.”
“Not quite.”
“You've lost Black Lantern.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I have one thing left.”
“What?”
“Your daughter.”
Emily stepped back.
Ward continued:
“Do you know why she was so important?”
I didn't answer.
“Because she isn't simply the successor to Black Lantern.”
He paused.
“She is the system.”
My blood froze.
“What does that mean?”
“Her brain contains the adaptive architecture.”
My husband whispered:
“No.”
Ward smiled.
“She can rewrite the system.”
I looked at Emily.
Ward continued:
“Which means if she dies…”
He paused.
“Final Dawn becomes permanent.”
The President stepped forward.
“You're threatening my country.”
Ward looked at him.
“I'm saving it.”
“You've murdered people.”
“I've prevented greater bloodshed.”
“You've manipulated governments.”
“I prevented collapse.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
Ward smiled.
“Your daughter was the only person capable of stopping the collapse.”
The President looked at me.
“What is he talking about?”
I answered:
“He's lying.”
Ward laughed.
“Ask your intelligence chief.”
The President froze.
“My intelligence chief?”
Ward smiled.
“Ask him who funded Project Lantern.”
The President looked at my father.
My father lowered his eyes.
The President whispered:
“General Hart?”
My father didn't answer.
“Did you fund it?”
My father finally said:
“Yes.”
The President looked horrified.
“How much?”
“All of it.”
Silence.
I stared at my father.
“You funded Black Lantern?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed it would save lives.”
“And when you realized what it became?”
“I tried to destroy it.”
“But you failed.”
“Yes.”
The President stepped toward him.
“You should have told me.”
My father looked at him.
“I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because every President after the first activation became a target.”
The President looked confused.
“Every President?”
My father nodded.
“Black Lantern wasn't just monitoring enemies.”
“It was monitoring the people at the top.”
I understood.
“Ward wasn't trying to control one President.”
“No.”
“He was building a system that could control every President.”
My father nodded.
“Exactly.”
The countdown continued.
17:21
My husband looked at the terminal.
“We're running out of time.”
Emily suddenly screamed.
I turned.
She had grabbed her head.
“Emily!”
“Mom!”
I ran to her.
“What happened?”
“He's inside my memories.”
“Who?”
“Ward.”
I held her shoulders.
“Look at me.”
She opened her eyes.
“Mom…”
“What?”
“He's trying to make me activate Final Dawn.”
“No.”
“He says I can stop it.”
“He's lying.”
“I know.”
She looked terrified.
“But I can see the command.”
“Where?”
“In my head.”
“Can you reach it?”
“Yes.”
“Can you destroy it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it's connected to me.”
I froze.
“What?”
Emily whispered:
“If I shut it down…”
She swallowed.
“I shut myself down.”
“No.”
My husband stepped forward.
“There has to be another way.”
Emily shook her head.
“I don't think so.”
“No.”
I grabbed her face.
“You are not sacrificing yourself.”
“But Mom…”
“No.”
“What if I can save everyone?”
“No.”
“What if that's what I'm supposed to do?”
“No!”
My voice echoed through the room.
“I didn't fight for twenty years just to lose you now.”
Emily started crying.
My father turned away.
The President looked down.
My husband approached me.
“Victoria…”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He placed a hand on my shoulder.
“We need another option.”
“There isn't one.”
“Then we create one.”
I looked at him.
He pointed toward the screen.
“The system recognizes both of you.”
Me.
And Emily.
Two generations.
Two keys.
I understood.
“Together.”
He nodded.
“You built the original architecture.”
“And she controls the adaptive layer.”
“Exactly.”
I looked at Emily.
“We don't shut down the system.”
She wiped her tears.
“We rewrite it.”
My husband smiled.
“That’s the plan.”
We connected the two terminals.
The system displayed:
PRIMARY USER: VICTORIA HART
SECONDARY USER: EMILY HART
Then:
DUAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
I placed my hand on the scanner.
Emily placed hers beside mine.
The countdown reached:
11:59
A message appeared.
SELECT FINAL COMMAND.
Options appeared.
EXECUTE
ABORT
TRANSFER
I looked at my husband.
“What does transfer do?”
“It moves system control to another user.”
“Who?”
“The President.”
I looked at him.
“If we transfer control…”
“The President can shut it down legally.”
The President stepped forward.
“I'll do it.”
I nodded.
“Then that's what we do.”
We selected:
TRANSFER
The system asked:
CONFIRM?
I looked at Emily.
She nodded.
I pressed confirm.
The countdown froze.
10:31
The entire facility went silent.
Then the screen displayed:
TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.
Ward appeared.
For the first time, he looked terrified.
“No.”
I stared at him.
“It's over.”
“You don't understand!”
“You're finished.”
“No!”
He screamed.
“You can't transfer the system!”
“Why?”
“Because the system isn't designed to obey the President.”
I smiled.
“Then why did you build it that way?”
Ward stared.
My father whispered:
“Because he never intended to obey the government.”
The President stepped forward.
“General Ward.”
Ward looked at him.
“You are relieved of command.”
Ward laughed.
“You think a title can stop me?”
“No.”
The President raised his weapon.
“But this can.”
Ward's face hardened.
Then the screen changed.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
The countdown disappeared.
The military network went silent.
Every order generated by Final Dawn was canceled.
Across Washington, military units received the same message:
STAND DOWN.
The President looked at me.
“It's over.”
I exhaled.
For the first time in years, I felt the weight leave my shoulders.
Emily smiled.
“We did it.”
Then the room shook.
Everyone froze.
My husband looked at the system.
“No.”
“What?”
He pointed.
A new message appeared.
FINAL DAWN: BACKUP SYSTEM ACTIVE.
I stared.
“What backup?”
My father looked at the screen.
His face went white.
“There was only supposed to be one.”
“Then who created the backup?”
Nobody answered.
A camera activated.
A face appeared.
Dr. Rebecca Sloan.
She smiled.
“You really thought Ward was the architect?”
I stepped forward.
“You.”
She nodded.
“Ward was useful.”
“You used him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because someone had to take the blame.”
My father whispered:
“Rebecca…”
She looked at him.
“You always were sentimental.”
I raised my weapon.
“Where is the backup?”
She smiled.
“You're standing inside it.”
I looked around.
The entire command center.
The walls.
The servers.
The floor.
My heart stopped.
“This facility…”
“Yes.”
“It isn't a command center.”
“No.”
She smiled.
“It's the final Black Lantern node.”
The lights turned red.
The doors locked.
Emily looked at me.
“Mom…”
I grabbed her hand.
The system announced:
FINAL DAWN: MANUAL ACTIVATION.
Dr. Sloan's voice came through the speakers.
“Victoria, you wanted the truth.”
I stared at the camera.
“Then hear it.”
She paused.
“Black Lantern was never created to control America.”
A beat.
“It was created to replace it.”
The screens all turned black.
Then one final message appeared:
May you like
WELCOME TO THE LAST DAY.
And somewhere above us, every nuclear command center in the country simultaneously went online.
