CHAPTER 14: FINAL DAWN

The words hung in the darkness.

FINAL DAWN.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then my father said the one thing I never expected to hear.

“Victoria, we have less than an hour.”

I turned toward him.

“Until what?”

He looked at my husband.

“Tell her.”

My husband stood frozen.

His face had lost all color.

“Final Dawn isn't an operation.”

I frowned.

“Then what is it?”

“A contingency.”

“For what?”

“For Black Lantern failing.”

I felt a chill.

“What kind of contingency?”

My husband looked at Emily.

“Regime continuity.”

The phrase meant nothing to her.

But it meant everything to my father.

He whispered:

“They've prepared a replacement government.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Not a coup,” my husband said.

“Something much worse.”

He walked toward the terminal.

“Black Lantern was designed to identify threats.”

“Final Dawn was designed to remove them.”

“Remove them how?”

He looked at me.

“By making the government believe the threats are attacking.”

I understood.

False emergencies.

Manufactured attacks.

Emergency powers.

Mass arrests.

Military deployment.

A government could be dismantled without a single politician being dragged from office.

All it needed was fear.

My father looked at the clock.

“Ward has already activated the first stage.”

“What happens next?”

“The President receives an emergency briefing.”

“And?”

“Three senior officials will recommend martial law.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

He named them.

I recognized every name.

People whose files had just been released.

People whose careers were built on Black Lantern.

I looked at the screens.

The news feeds were exploding.

NATIONAL SECURITY CRISIS.

PRESIDENTIAL EMERGENCY MEETING UNDERWAY.

MILITARY UNITS MOVING IN WASHINGTON.

Then another headline appeared.

UNIDENTIFIED ATTACKS REPORTED NEAR CAPITOL HILL.

My husband whispered:

“It's begun.”

Emily looked at me.

“Mom, what do we do?”

I looked at her.

“We go to Washington.”

My father immediately shook his head.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because you're wanted.”

“I know.”

“Every law enforcement agency in the country has your photograph.”

“I know.”

“Your name is on every security system.”

I smiled.

“Then we'll use that.”

My father frowned.

“What do you mean?”

I looked at my husband.

“Can you access the military network?”

“Yes.”

“Can you make it believe I'm still authorized?”

He hesitated.

“For a few minutes.”

“I only need one.”

My father understood.

“You're going to walk into the White House.”

“Yes.”

“Victoria…”

“And stop a coup.”

He stared at me.

“You're insane.”

I smiled.

“Probably.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“This is bigger than Emily now.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

Michael raised his weapon.

“So am I.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“I'll go too.”

I looked at him.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“But Emily saved me.”

Emily frowned.

“When?”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“Before you knew it.”

He looked at me.

“I owe your family.”

I nodded.

“Then let's move.”

My husband stepped toward me.

“You don't want me there.”

I stared at him.

“I didn't say that.”

“You're angry.”

“Yes.”

“You don't trust me.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

I looked into his eyes.

“But I need you.”

His expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because you know Final Dawn.”

He nodded.

“Then I'll help you end it.”

We moved through the emergency tunnel beneath the facility.

Behind us, the archive was burning.

Not the physical servers.

The evidence had already escaped.

Everywhere.

No one could erase it now.

When we reached the surface, a military helicopter was waiting.

My father looked at it.

“You stole this?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Gabriel smiled.

“I borrowed it.”

My father stared at him.

“You're Prescott.”

Gabriel shrugged.

“Old habits.”

We climbed aboard.

The helicopter lifted.

Washington was less than an hour away.

I watched the city disappear beneath the clouds.

My husband sat across from me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“There's something I haven't told you.”

I looked at him.

“What now?”

“Final Dawn has a trigger.”

“What trigger?”

“Someone has to activate it from inside the White House.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“Ward.”

I frowned.

“Then we find him.”

He shook his head.

“He won't be there.”

“Why?”

“Because he's not the one who activates it.”

I stared.

“Who is?”

He hesitated.

“The President.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?”

“Ward has manipulated the emergency briefing.”

“The President will activate Final Dawn believing it's necessary.”

My father leaned forward.

“Then we need to reach him before the briefing ends.”

“How long?”

My husband looked at his watch.

“Thirty-seven minutes.”

The helicopter banked.

Washington appeared ahead.

Smoke rose from several points across the city.

Sirens filled the air.

I stared.

“It already looks like a war zone.”

My father shook his head.

“That's the point.”

“What?”

“Make people believe the war has already begun.”

My husband looked at me.

“Then offer them protection.”

I nodded.

“And once they accept…”

“Final Dawn becomes permanent.”

The helicopter suddenly shook.

Warning lights flashed.

“What's happening?”

The pilot shouted:

“Missile lock!”

Everyone grabbed the restraints.

My father shouted:

“Evasive!”

The helicopter dropped.

My stomach rose into my throat.

Another missile passed beneath us.

Then another.

Gabriel looked out the window.

“Those aren't military missiles.”

“What are they?”

“Private defense contractors.”

My husband cursed.

“Ward.”

The helicopter shook violently.

The pilot shouted:

“We're losing hydraulics!”

I looked at Washington.

“We can't land normally.”

My father pointed toward a rooftop.

“There.”

The helicopter descended.

We hit the roof hard.

The landing gear broke.

Everyone was thrown forward.

I felt Emily's hand.

“Mom!”

“I'm here!”

The aircraft tilted.

“Get out!”

We climbed through the side door.

The helicopter slid off the rooftop.

It disappeared over the edge.

A massive explosion erupted below.

We stared.

My father said quietly:

“No going back now.”

I looked toward the White House.

It was surrounded by military vehicles.

But the soldiers weren't attacking.

They were guarding it.

Or guarding something inside.

My husband pointed.

“That's our route.”

“How?”

“Underground.”

“Where?”

“There used to be a service tunnel beneath the East Wing.”

My father looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because I helped build it.”

I stared.

“You built a tunnel into the White House?”

He nodded.

“Prescott Construction had the contract.”

I shook my head.

“Of course you did.”

We moved.

Five minutes later, we reached a maintenance entrance.

My husband entered the access code.

The door opened.

Inside was darkness.

We moved quickly.

Then we heard voices.

Soldiers.

My father raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

The voices came closer.

“Search every corridor.”

“Where's Colonel Hart?”

“Intelligence says she's heading for the White House.”

“Kill on sight?”

A pause.

“That's the order.”

I looked at my father.

He whispered:

“Kill on sight.”

I nodded.

“Then we stop being quiet.”

We moved.

The corridor erupted.

Gunfire.

Shouting.

Smoke.

I fired only when necessary.

My father moved beside me.

Gabriel covered the rear.

Michael protected Emily.

My husband ran ahead.

Then suddenly he stopped.

“What?”

He pointed.

A steel door.

Beyond it was the emergency command center.

We opened it.

Inside were six people.

Three generals.

Two cabinet officials.

And the President.

Everyone turned.

The President raised a weapon.

“Colonel Hart?”

I lowered mine.

“Mr. President.”

One of the generals shouted:

“She's the traitor!”

I looked at him.

“You're on the list.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“The Black Lantern list.”

I pulled out the drive.

“Your name is here.”

He stepped backward.

“That's fabricated.”

“No.”

My husband stepped forward.

“We have the original recordings.”

The President looked at him.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Gabriel Prescott.”

The President stared.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

“Apparently everyone is.”

My father stepped forward.

“Mr. President, Final Dawn is a false emergency protocol.”

One of the generals interrupted:

“That's a lie.”

I pointed at the screen.

“Then explain why three of the men advising you are named in Black Lantern.”

Silence.

The President looked at them.

“Is this true?”

Nobody answered.

Then one of the cabinet officials drew his weapon.

The President reacted first.

He shot him.

The room exploded into chaos.

Another official reached for the emergency button.

I tackled him.

He fought violently.

My husband pulled him away.

The President shouted:

“WHAT IS HAPPENING?”

I looked at him.

“Your government has been infiltrated.”

He stared.

“By whom?”

I answered:

“General Ward.”

The President shook his head.

“Ward has been advising me for years.”

“I know.”

“He's one of my most trusted officers.”

“I know.”

“He saved my life.”

I looked at him.

“That is exactly why you're in danger.”

Suddenly every monitor in the room turned black.

Then Ward appeared.

He was smiling.

“Mr. President.”

The President stepped toward the screen.

“General.”

Ward nodded.

“I'm afraid Colonel Hart has deceived you.”

I raised my weapon.

“Don't listen to him.”

Ward continued.

“She is responsible for the leak.”

The President looked at me.

Ward's voice became colder.

“She has compromised national security.”

The screen changed.

A recording appeared.

Me.

Sitting in a room.

Saying:

“I will destroy the government.”

The President looked horrified.

I stared.

It was the fake recording.

Ward had released it.

“It's fabricated.”

Ward smiled.

“Of course she'll say that.”

I looked at the President.

“Mr. President, listen to the original.”

My husband inserted the drive.

The screen changed.

My real recording appeared.

My younger voice filled the room.

“Black Lantern was created to protect the country.”

Then Ward's voice:

“You're going to regret this.”

My younger self answered:

“No.”

The recording continued.

Then the screen displayed metadata.

AUTHENTICATED.

The President stared.

The room went silent.

Ward's face disappeared.

For a moment, I thought we'd won.

Then the President's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Colonel…”

“What?”

He whispered:

“The Pentagon has been taken.”

My blood ran cold.

“By whom?”

The President looked at the screen.

A new message appeared.

FINAL DAWN: STAGE THREE ACTIVATED.

My husband stepped closer.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Stage Three requires the President's biometric authorization.”

The President looked at his own hands.

“I didn't authorize anything.”

My father stared at him.

“Then someone has your biometric data.”

The President's phone rang again.

He answered.

This time, he didn't speak.

He simply listened.

Then his face went white.

He lowered the phone.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“They have my daughter.”

Silence.

Ward's voice returned through the speakers.

“Now, Mr. President…”

The screen showed a photograph of a young woman.

The President's daughter.

Alive.

Terrified.

Ward smiled.

“Let's finish Final Dawn.”

The President looked at me.

“Can you save her?”

I looked at Emily.

Then at the President.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Then I'll help you.”

He walked toward the emergency terminal.

But before he could reach it, every screen in the room changed.

A countdown appeared.

29:59

29:58

29:57

My husband stared.

“Thirty minutes.”

“For what?”

He looked at me.

“The final stage.”

“What happens at zero?”

He whispered:

“The military receives one order.”

I stared at the countdown.

“What order?”

He looked at me.

“Terminate every person on the Black Lantern list.”

I looked at the screen.

One hundred and twelve names.

Mine.

My father's.

My husband's.

Emily's.

And hundreds of others.

The President whispered:

“Can we stop it?”

I looked at the countdown.

29:41

Then I smiled.

“Yes.”

My husband frowned.

“How?”

I picked up the President's phone.

“We don't stop Final Dawn.”

“We change the target.”

Everyone stared at me.

I looked at the screen.

“Ward thinks he controls the system.”

I smiled.

“He forgot one thing.”

“What?”

I looked at Emily.

“She learned it from me.”

Emily stepped toward the terminal.

“What do you want me to do?”

I looked into my daughter's eyes.

“Remember.”

She placed her hand on the scanner.

The system activated.

SUBJECT V-02 CONFIRMED.

The countdown continued.

28:59

Then a new message appeared.

SECONDARY TARGET SELECTION.

Emily looked at me.

“Mom?”

I whispered:

“Find Ward.”

May you like

Her eyes closed.

And the entire command center went dark.
