CHAPTER 13: THE GHOST FROM VICTORIA’S PAST

The photograph sat on my desk for hours.
I did not touch it.
I did not move it.
I simply stared at it.
Emily.
Before the Prescott family.
Before the fear.
Before the hospital bed.
Before everything changed.
She was smiling in the picture.
A real smile.
The kind that reaches the eyes.
The kind that belongs to someone who believes the future will be kind to them.
I turned the photograph over again.
Six words.
“You still do not know everything.”
A threat.
A warning.
Or perhaps both.
But the thing that disturbed me most was not the message.
It was the date.
The photograph had been taken before Emily married Ethan.
Before the Prescott family publicly entered her life.
Which meant someone had been watching her long before we realized.
Daniel arrived within the hour.
The moment he saw the photograph, his expression changed.
“You got it too.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
He placed his phone on the table.
Another message.
Another anonymous delivery.
Another photograph.
This one was older.
Much older.
A military photograph.
My photograph.
Taken almost twenty years ago.
I was standing with a group of officers after a deployment.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then I noticed the person standing in the background.
A man.
Partially hidden.
But recognizable.
My eyes narrowed.
“Impossible.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You know him?”
I stared at the image.
A memory I had buried for years suddenly returned.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
I answered quietly.
“General Marcus Vale.”
The name carried weight.
General Marcus Vale had been one of the most respected military leaders of his generation.
A decorated officer.
A strategist.
A man known publicly for discipline and honor.
But years ago, during one of my most difficult missions, I discovered something about him.
Something I was never supposed to find.
A financial operation.
Private contractors.
Missing funds.
A chain of people using military connections for personal gain.
I reported what I found.
The investigation began.
Then suddenly…
it ended.
The case disappeared.
The evidence vanished.
And Marcus Vale retired shortly afterward.
Everyone told me to move on.
I did.
Or at least I thought I did.
Daniel studied me carefully.
“Victoria.”
“Yes?”
“Are you saying General Vale was connected to the Prescott network?”
“I do not know.”
“But?”
I looked at the documents again.
“But I think he may have been there before them.”
Daniel opened his laptop.
“Then we need to look at the timeline.”
Within minutes, he created a timeline.
Twenty years ago.
My investigation into military corruption.
Fifteen years ago.
Marcus Vale leaves active service.
Ten years ago.
The Prescott family begins expanding their political influence.
Eight years ago.
First complaints against the Prescott companies disappear.
Years later.
Emily marries Ethan.
The pattern was impossible to ignore.
The Prescott family was not the beginning.
They were a continuation.
That afternoon, I visited Emily.
She immediately noticed something was wrong.
“Mom?”
I forced a calm expression.
“What?”
“You look worried.”
I sat beside her.
“There may be more to this.”
Her expression changed.
“More?”
I nodded.
“The Prescott family may have been connected to something larger.”
She looked down.
“I thought it was over.”
I reached for her hand.
“So did I.”
A pause.
“But sometimes the last chapter of a battle is not about defeating the enemy.”
“What is it about?”
“Understanding why the battle started.”
The next morning, Daniel uncovered Marcus Vale’s current location.
He was living quietly outside Charlotte.
No public appearances.
No interviews.
No involvement in politics.
A man who disappeared from the world.
That alone was suspicious.
People who retire peacefully usually do not vanish.
People hiding something do.
We went to see him.
The house was smaller than I expected.
Simple.
Almost ordinary.
An elderly man opened the door.
But his eyes were still sharp.
The moment he saw me, he knew.
“Victoria Hart.”
His voice carried no surprise.
“You knew I would come.”
Marcus Vale looked at me for several seconds.
Then he stepped aside.
“Come in.”
The inside of the house was filled with old military photographs.
Awards.
Memories.
A life built around service.
I looked at him.
“You received the photograph.”
It was not a question.
He nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who sent it?”
“I do not know.”
I studied his reaction.
He was telling the truth.
Or he was very good at lying.
“You know why I am here.”
“Yes.”
“Then explain.”
Marcus sighed.
“I wondered how long it would take.”
The words bothered me.
“How long what would take?”
“For you to find the connection.”
He sat down.
“You were always too good at finding patterns.”
I ignored the compliment.
“Start talking.”
He looked at the floor.
“The Prescott family did not build their influence.”
A pause.
“They inherited it.”
“From who?”
His eyes met mine.
“People who understood one thing.”
“What?”
“Control is stronger than money.”
Marcus explained.
Years ago, a group of wealthy individuals, politicians, and business leaders formed an unofficial network.
Not an organization.
Not something with a name.
Something more dangerous.
A collection of powerful people protecting each other.
They exchanged favors.
They removed obstacles.
They controlled information.
“The Prescott family was useful because they were ambitious.”
Marcus said.
“They were willing to do things others were not.”
I looked at him.
“And Emily?”
His expression changed.
“That was not supposed to happen.”
I became still.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus looked away.
“The plan was never about hurting your daughter.”
My voice hardened.
“But it did.”
“Yes.”
He looked ashamed.
“Because people who build systems like this eventually stop seeing people as human.”
Then Marcus revealed the final secret.
The reason Emily was targeted.
The reason the Prescott family wanted a connection to me.
Years earlier, during my military investigation, I had uncovered financial records.
Records that could have destroyed the entire network.
But before the investigation disappeared…
one person saved a copy.
Me.
“You kept evidence?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Marcus looked at me.
“You still have it.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The one thing you thought was meaningless.”
My mind searched through memories.
Old documents.
Old boxes.
Old military files.
Then I remembered.
A sealed folder I had kept after my retirement.
A folder I never opened again.
Because I believed the investigation was finished.
Marcus continued.
“They knew you had it.”
My heart tightened.
“So they targeted Emily to get to me.”
He nodded.
That night, I returned home and opened the old storage box.
Inside was the folder.
The one I had ignored for years.
My hands shook slightly as I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
And one final piece.
A list of names.
Names of people connected to the network.
At the bottom of the page was a handwritten note.
Not mine.
Someone else's.
“If this evidence is ever found, the people behind it will try to destroy whoever possesses it.”
I turned the page.
A second note.
A name.
The person who wrote it.
I froze.
Because I knew that name.
It belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had been beside me from the beginning.
Someone who had helped me fight the Prescott family.
I called Daniel immediately.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“I know who started this.”
Silence.
“Who?”
I looked at the name.
My voice became quiet.
“It was someone we never suspected.”
“Who?”
I closed my eyes.
“Elizabeth Morgan.”
The lawyer who had been fighting beside us.
The person who had helped expose the Prescott family.
The person everyone trusted.
The person who had guided the entire case.
Daniel was silent.
Then he said one sentence:
“Victoria…”
“Yes?”
“If Elizabeth is involved…”
A pause.
“Then everything we thought we knew about this case may be a lie.”
I looked at the documents.
At the years of secrets.
At the people who had entered my life.
And suddenly I understood.
The most dangerous enemy was never the person standing against you.
It was the person standing beside you…
waiting for the right moment to turn around.
