CHAPTER 10: THE MAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE

The courtroom was frozen.

Not silent.

Frozen.

There is a difference.

Silence is when people choose not to speak.

Frozen is when nobody knows what to say.

And that was exactly what happened after Margaret Prescott’s confession.

The woman who had spent years controlling every room she entered was suddenly standing in one where she had lost control.

Her carefully designed world was collapsing.

Not because someone attacked it.

Because she finally admitted there were cracks.

The judge leaned forward.

“Mrs. Prescott, I want to be very clear.”

His voice carried authority.

“If you are making an accusation, you understand the seriousness of what you are saying?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

Richard Caldwell immediately stood.

“Your Honor, my client is under extreme emotional pressure—”

The judge looked at him.

“Sit down, Mr. Caldwell.”

The entire courtroom went quiet.

Richard slowly sat.

For the first time, even their lawyer looked uncertain.

The Prescott family had always controlled the conversation.

But now the conversation was moving without them.

Margaret looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a heavy secret and finally became too tired to carry it anymore.

“The person who helped build the Prescott family’s influence…”

She paused.

“…was not my husband.”

Everyone waited.

“Not Ethan.”

“Not Brandon.”

Her eyes moved across the courtroom.

“It was someone much more powerful.”

Elizabeth Morgan stood.

“Who?”

Margaret looked toward the judge.

“Judge Alexander Waverly.”

The room erupted.

Gasps.

Whispers.

Shock.

The name traveled through the courtroom like electricity.

Even I knew who he was.

Judge Alexander Waverly.

A respected figure.

A man who had spent decades presenting himself as a symbol of fairness.

The face of justice.

The person people trusted.

And according to Margaret…

he was the person who had protected the Prescott family.

Daniel immediately leaned toward me.

“Victoria.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

His expression was serious.

“But this explains everything.”

“What?”

“The dismissed complaints.”

“The sealed records.”

“The cases that disappeared.”

My eyes moved back to Margaret.

A judge.

A powerful family.

A hidden network.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Elizabeth approached Margaret.

“Mrs. Prescott, explain your relationship with Judge Waverly.”

Margaret hesitated.

Then spoke.

“He helped my family for years.”

“How?”

“He gave advice.”

“What kind of advice?”

Margaret looked down.

“Legal strategy.”

Elizabeth continued.

“And more?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

The courtroom waited.

“He helped us control situations before they became problems.”

A chill moved through the room.

“Control?”

Margaret nodded.

“He knew people.”

“Lawyers.”

“Officials.”

“Media contacts.”

“He knew how to make things disappear.”

Richard Caldwell suddenly stood again.

“This is absurd.”

The judge looked at him.

“Mr. Caldwell.”

“This testimony is coming from someone who is clearly attempting to reduce her own responsibility.”

Elizabeth responded immediately.

“Your Honor, the witness may have her own motives, but the evidence will determine the truth.”

The judge nodded.

“Proceed.”

Elizabeth returned to Margaret.

“Why are you revealing this now?”

That question mattered.

Everyone wanted the answer.

Margaret looked toward Ethan.

Then Brandon.

Then finally toward Emily.

“Because I realized something.”

Her voice became quieter.

“We believed we were protecting our family.”

A pause.

“But we became something else.”

“What?”

Margaret looked down.

“Something we could no longer control.”

The courtroom break was chaotic.

Reporters surrounded the courthouse.

Phones rang constantly.

News outlets rushed to publish updates.

The story had changed completely.

It was no longer:

Military Colonel vs. Wealthy Family.

Now it was:

A Powerful Network Facing Exposure.

Outside, Emily stood quietly.

She watched the reporters from a distance.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Is it really possible?”

“What?”

“That someone like that could hide things for so long?”

I looked at the courthouse.

“Yes.”

She looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because power can create walls.”

I paused.

“But walls can also trap the people who build them.”

That night, Daniel discovered something troubling.

Margaret’s confession was not the end.

It was a beginning.

He arrived at my house carrying another folder.

“You found more.”

He nodded.

“Much more.”

I opened it.

Inside were records connected to Judge Waverly.

Not just the Prescott family.

Other companies.

Other cases.

Other names.

A pattern stretching back twenty years.

“This is bigger than Emily.”

“Yes.”

Daniel pointed at one document.

“But this is what matters most.”

I looked closer.

A financial record.

A payment.

A date.

My expression changed.

“Wait.”

Daniel nodded.

“Look at the date.”

I did.

The payment occurred three months before Emily married Ethan.

“What does this mean?”

Daniel looked at me.

“It means the Prescott family’s plan started before the wedding.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“They chose Emily.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel was silent.

Then he answered:

“Because of her connection to you.”

I stared at him.

The realization hit hard.

Emily had not been targeted because she was weak.

She had been targeted because she was my daughter.

They knew who I was.

They knew my reputation.

They knew I would fight.

And they thought controlling Emily would control me.

The next morning, I received an unexpected call.

The number was blocked.

I answered.

“Colonel Hart.”

A voice.

Older.

Calm.

Powerful.

“Your investigation has gone too far.”

I immediately recognized it.

Judge Alexander Waverly.

“You are calling to threaten me?”

“No.”

His voice remained composed.

“I am calling to warn you.”

“About what?”

A pause.

“People who challenge powerful systems often discover those systems fight back.”

I looked at the documents on my desk.

“You mean people like you?”

Silence.

Then:

“You have no idea what you are stepping into.”

I smiled slightly.

“You are right.”

A pause.

“I have spent my life stepping into situations where people told me not to go.”

His voice hardened.

“This is not a battlefield.”

“No.”

I looked out the window.

“It is worse.”

“What?”

“A place where people believe they can hurt others and call it business.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“You will regret this.”

I answered calmly.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But Emily will never regret that someone stood up for her.”

I ended the call.

Hours later, Daniel uncovered one final piece of information.

Something that changed everything.

A hidden account.

A private archive.

A collection of evidence Judge Waverly had kept for years.

And the person who had access to it…

was someone nobody expected.

Someone inside the Prescott family.

Someone who had been watching.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Daniel looked at me.

“Victoria.”

“Yes?”

“The person who can bring Waverly down…”

He handed me a name.

I read it.

And my eyes widened.

May you like

Because the person was the last person I expected.

Ethan Prescott.
