Chapter 2 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be DeadThe photograph stayed on my screen while the hospital corridor blurred around me.

I zoomed in.
The fourth man was standing behind Walter, half-shadowed beneath a porch light.
Tall.
Thin.
Gray hair.
A scar above his right eyebrow.
There was no mistaking him.
Victor Kane.
Officially dead.
Unofficially one of the most dangerous men I had ever crossed paths with.
I hadn't seen him since the night I buried my old identity.
My phone rang again.
The encrypted line.
I answered.
"What is this?"
"It's Victor Kane."
"I know who he is."
"No," the voice said. "You know who he was."
I walked farther down the hallway.
"Explain."
"Victor disappeared twelve years ago. His body was supposedly recovered from a burned vehicle in Montana."
"Supposedly?"
"DNA was inconclusive."
I stopped.
"Why?"
"Because somebody switched the body."
My jaw clenched.
"Who?"
"You."
I almost dropped the phone.
"I never switched his body."
"Exactly."
A file appeared on my screen.
Digital scans.
Old surveillance photos.
Financial transactions.
Police reports.
Then one image made my breathing stop.
Christine.
She was younger.
Maybe twenty-two.
Standing beside Victor Kane.
Not Walter.
Not Brian.
Victor.
My hands went numb.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
I opened the image metadata.
Taken fourteen years ago.
Before I met Christine.
Before she moved to my city.
Before she ever told me her father had built a successful construction company from nothing.
I swallowed.
"Who is she?"
"We don't know."
"She's my wife."
"That's exactly why you need to listen."
My eyes returned to the photo.
Christine was smiling.
Not the nervous smile I knew.
Not the tired smile she used when Jake asked for another bedtime story.
This was different.
Confident.
Controlled.
The smile of someone standing next to a man who frightened entire organizations.
"There's more," the voice said.
"What?"
"Walter Mercer wasn't always a construction executive."
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The pieces began moving.
The unexplained cash.
The private warehouse.
The men who occasionally appeared at family gatherings and somehow never drank.
The locked office nobody entered.
The insistence that Jake spend weekends at Walter's house.
I had noticed those things.
I had just chosen not to investigate.
Because investigating meant becoming Ethan again.
And I had promised myself I would never do that.
"Why did they attack Jake?"
"I don't know yet."
"Then find out."
The voice paused.
"You don't understand, Ethan."
"I told you not to call me that."
"The people around your wife aren't normal."
My grip tightened.
"Who are they?"
"That's the problem."
A second file arrived.
A financial statement.
Millions moving through companies that had no employees.
Then another.
A list of names.
One name appeared again and again.
Project Harrow.
I hadn't heard that name in twelve years.
My heartbeat accelerated.
Harrow had been the operation that ended my old life.
The operation that killed five people.
The operation that almost killed me.
And the operation that had left me with one final instruction from my handler.
Walk away.
Forget us.
Forget everything.
Because the next people coming for you won't stop.
I had obeyed.
Until today.
I looked through the glass.
Jake stirred.
His eyes opened.
He looked toward the door.
When he saw me, his small hand lifted.
I walked back into his room.
"Hey, buddy."
"Dad?"
"I'm here."
He swallowed.
"I remembered something."
I sat down.
"What?"
"Grandpa wasn't the one who told them to hold me."
My entire body went rigid.
"Who was?"
Jake looked frightened.
"Mom."
The room seemed to shrink.
He continued.
"Mom told Grandpa..."
His voice cracked.
"She told him not to hurt my head."
I stared at him.
"Why would she say that?"
Jake shook his head.
"Because she said..."
He squeezed my fingers.
"Because she needed me to remember something."
I leaned closer.
"What?"
Jake whispered four words.
"Your real name, Daddy."
My heart stopped.
Because Jake had never heard it.
Never.
I had never told him.
Not once.
Then the hospital door opened behind me.
Christine stepped inside.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes went immediately to Jake.
Then to me.
Then to the phone in my hand.
And for the first time since I had known her, my wife looked at me as if she had just realized something terrible.
May you like
She knew.
She knew exactly who I was.
