Chapter 14 - The PromiseThe facility descended into darkness.

Alarms erupted.

Walter fired.

I heard Christine scream.

Then nothing.

Only ringing.

I opened my eyes.

Jake was on the floor.

I crawled toward him.

"Dad?"

"I'm here."

He was bleeding from his shoulder.

Not badly.

But enough.

I pulled him into my arms.

Walter was gone.

Mara appeared through the smoke.

"Move!"

The server room was collapsing.

Sparks rained from the ceiling.

Evelyn shouted, "The backup system is still running!"

Lucas pointed toward a secondary console.

"We need the manual override."

I remembered.

A code.

Something I had written twelve years ago.

A sequence nobody else knew.

I ran to the console.

ENTER AUTHORIZATION

I typed.

E-T-H-A-N.

Rejected.

Then I remembered my father's warning.

The system wasn't designed for me.

It was designed for the bloodline.

I entered Jake's birth date.

Rejected.

Christine's.

Rejected.

Lucas's.

Rejected.

Then I understood.

The code wasn't a name.

It was a promise.

I typed the words I had written before the fire.

NO CHILD BELONGS TO ANYONE.

Accepted.

The system began deleting.

One profile after another disappeared.

Twenty-three thousand.

Twenty-two thousand.

Ten thousand.

Five thousand.

Then zero.

The facility went silent.

I turned.

Walter stood behind me.

Gun raised.

Christine was between us.

He fired.

She fell.

"Christine!"

I ran toward her.

Walter lowered the weapon.

Then Lucas tackled him.

They crashed into the server racks.

Mara dragged Christine away.

"She's alive!"

I looked back.

Lucas and Walter were fighting.

Walter slammed Lucas against the wall.

I grabbed him.

We hit the floor.

He looked at me.

"You could have been great."

I stared at him.

"I was."

Then I saw something in his hand.

A detonator.

My blood went cold.

"Walter."

He smiled.

The countdown began.

Thirty seconds.

I grabbed Jake.

"Everybody out!"

We ran.

Evelyn pulled Mara.

Lucas followed.

Christine was barely conscious.

We reached the exit.

Then Walter appeared behind us.

He was limping.

But smiling.

"Run."

I stopped.

He raised the detonator.

"Run, Ethan."

Then pressed it.

Nothing happened.

He looked down.

Confused.

The detonator was dead.

I stared.

"You forgot."

"What?"

I held up the device.

"When I built Harrow, I made sure the architect couldn't be killed by his own system."

Walter's smile disappeared.

"The detonator was connected to the database."

I dropped it.

"The database is gone."

For the first time, Walter looked afraid.

The facility exploded behind him.

The shockwave threw us outside.

I hit the ground.

Jake landed beside me.

For a few seconds, everything was silent.

Then I heard my son's breathing.

Alive.

I pulled him close.

He whispered:

"You came for me."

"I promised."

Across the parking lot, Christine was being loaded into an ambulance.

Mara stood beside me.

"You kept the promise."

I looked at the burning facility.

"No."

I looked at Jake.

"I finally understood it."

Then my phone vibrated.

One message.

From an unknown number.

YOU DESTROYED THE DATABASE.

A second message appeared.

BUT YOU FORGOT ONE COPY.

My stomach dropped.

A final message.

LOOK IN YOUR SON'S ROOM.

I looked at Jake.

He looked back at me.

May you like

And somewhere far away...

a screen turned on.
