CHAPTER 14: THE WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN LYING BESIDE US

Every gun in the room turned toward us.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Evelyn smiled.
Not the frightened smile of an old woman.
Not the tired expression of a doctor who had carried too many secrets.
This was different.
Cold.
Precise.
Practiced.
I stepped backward.
“Evelyn…”
She raised one finger.
“Don't.”
My daughter grabbed my hand.
“She isn't Grandma.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You remember more than I expected.”
My son moved in front of his sister.
“You lied to Mom.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I lied to everyone.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“In the red room.”
“Yes.”
“You watched them take her.”
“Yes.”
He clenched his fists.
“You watched them take all of us.”
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“Why?”
Evelyn's expression didn't change.
“Because someone had to make sure the experiment survived.”
I stared at her.
“You weren't protecting us.”
“No.”
“You were protecting Project Mirror.”
“Yes.”
My stomach twisted.
“Then who are you?”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Someone your father trusted more than you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“That doesn't narrow it down.”
Evelyn tilted her head.
“You still think your father was in charge.”
My smile disappeared.
“What?”
“He wasn't.”
Silence.
The screens behind her flickered.
My father's face appeared.
He looked terrified.
“Evelyn.”
She turned toward the monitor.
“You should have stayed dead.”
My father whispered:
“You promised.”
“I promised nothing.”
“Release Claire.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what you've started.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I understand perfectly.”
She turned toward me.
“Your father spent twenty years protecting the archive.”
“And you?”
“I spent twenty years waiting for the right moment to take it.”
Marcus slowly raised his weapon.
Evelyn's men immediately aimed at him.
“Put it down.”
Marcus didn't move.
“Or what?”
Evelyn smiled.
“You'll find out.”
I stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Marcus looked at me.
I shook my head.
Not yet.
We needed answers.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why did you pretend to be my mother?”
“Because it was the easiest way to control you.”
“You knew I'd believe you.”
“You wanted to.”
“What?”
“After twenty years of lies, you wanted one person to tell you the truth.”
She stepped closer.
“And I gave you exactly what you wanted.”
I felt sick.
“You told me my father erased my memories.”
“He did.”
“You told me he kidnapped my children.”
“He did.”
“You told me you saved them.”
Evelyn laughed.
“That was the lie.”
My daughter whispered:
“You didn't save me.”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Your father.”
My daughter froze.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
I stared.
“My father protected her?”
“He tried.”
“Then why was she trapped underground?”
“Because Richard took control.”
I looked at the monitor.
My father closed his eyes.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father built Project Mirror.”
“But Richard took it.”
“Yes.”
“And you?”
“I worked for both.”
“Why?”
She smiled.
“Because I believed in the research.”
I looked at my children.
“You experimented on babies.”
“They weren't ordinary babies.”
“They were children.”
“They were keys.”
My son shouted:
“We aren't keys!”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You are.”
My daughter stepped forward.
“No.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You'll understand soon.”
The lights went out.
Gunfire erupted.
Marcus tackled me to the floor.
“DOWN!”
The room became chaos.
I grabbed both children.
“Stay with me!”
Adrian disappeared into the darkness.
Someone screamed.
A gunshot.
Then another.
Emergency lights came on.
Half the guards were down.
Marcus stood with his weapon raised.
“Move!”
We ran.
Behind us, Evelyn shouted:
“Don't let them reach the archive!”
We raced through a narrow corridor.
My daughter knew the way.
“Left!”
We turned.
“Down!”
We descended another staircase.
Adrian caught up with us.
“Where are we going?”
My daughter pointed ahead.
“The archive.”
Marcus looked at me.
“Why would she know?”
I didn't answer.
Because I was beginning to remember.
Not just fragments.
Everything.
The red room.
The hospital.
My father.
Daniel.
Richard.
Evelyn.
And the night I discovered the truth.
I had built Project Mirror.
Not for money.
Not for power.
For one reason.
To preserve memories.
My mother had developed dementia.
She had forgotten my name.
Forgotten my childhood.
Forgotten herself.
I wanted to create a system capable of storing human memories.
My father funded it.
Richard joined.
Evelyn became the medical director.
Daniel handled security.
It started as medicine.
Then they discovered something.
Children were better carriers.
Their brains were still developing.
Their neural pathways could be altered.
I had objected.
I had tried to shut it down.
That's when my father betrayed me.
He didn't erase my memories because I was dangerous.
He erased them because I was going to expose him.
And the children?
They were evidence.
Living evidence.
We reached the archive door.
My daughter touched it.
Nothing happened.
My son placed his hand beside hers.
The lock clicked.
Then Adrian placed his hand on the third panel.
The door opened.
Inside was a circular chamber.
At its center stood a transparent cylinder.
Inside was a small metal sphere.
Black.
Covered in thousands of tiny lines.
Marcus stared.
“What is that?”
I whispered:
“The archive.”
The sphere began glowing.
My son stepped forward.
His eyes suddenly went blank.
“Mom.”
I grabbed him.
“What happened?”
“I can hear them.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
His body trembled.
Memories began pouring into him.
Images appeared on the walls.
Executives.
Politicians.
Doctors.
Judges.
Police chiefs.
Bankers.
Celebrities.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Murder orders.
Blackmail.
Everything.
Marcus stared at the screens.
“This is enough to destroy half the country.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“This could destroy the entire network.”
“That's what they want.”
“Who?”
I pointed toward the sphere.
“Whoever controls it.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“We have to destroy it.”
My daughter shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Mom needs to see it first.”
I looked at her.
She was right.
I needed to know what I'd done.
The sphere opened.
A beam of light struck the wall.
A recording appeared.
Me.
Twenty years younger.
Standing in the red room.
I watched myself hold a newborn baby.
My father stood behind me.
Richard stood beside him.
Evelyn was at the operating table.
Daniel stood near the door.
Young me looked directly into the camera.
And said:
“If you're watching this, then I failed.”
My heart stopped.
The recording continued.
“I know they'll erase my memories.”
I watched myself place a small bracelet around the baby's wrist.
“That's why I'm leaving this.”
The camera moved closer.
I saw the baby.
My daughter.
But she wasn't the baby I remembered.
There was another infant beside her.
A tiny boy.
Adrian.
And another.
My son.
Three babies.
Then a fourth incubator.
Empty.
My younger self began crying.
“There's one child they don't know about.”
I stared at the screen.
My father looked furious.
Richard shouted:
“Stop the recording!”
But younger me continued.
“The fourth child isn't a key.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“She is the person who can destroy Project Mirror.”
The recording flickered.
A fourth baby appeared.
A little girl.
Alive.
Healthy.
My daughter gasped.
“That's her.”
I stared.
“Who?”
She pointed.
“That baby.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“No.”
My son stepped closer.
“Who is she?”
The recording showed younger me handing the baby to someone.
The person's face was hidden.
Then the camera angle changed.
The person turned.
I stopped breathing.
It was Daniel.
But Daniel wasn't alone.
Beside him stood another woman.
Victoria.
My husband.
And Victoria.
Together.
My daughter screamed:
“No!”
The recording continued.
Young me said:
“Daniel will take her somewhere safe.”
Victoria took the baby.
Then looked directly at the camera.
She smiled.
The recording ended.
I couldn't move.
Daniel had taken my child.
Victoria had helped him.
My husband had lied to me for ten years.
But then another file opened automatically.
FINAL MEMORY: CLAIRE BENNETT
The screen displayed one sentence:
YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FORGET WHY YOU CHOSE DANIEL.
I stared at the words.
Then the archive opened a final video.
Daniel appeared.
Not the Daniel I knew.
A younger Daniel.
He was holding the fourth baby.
He looked terrified.
And behind him stood Richard.
Richard said:
“Take the child.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Richard raised a gun.
“Take her.”
Daniel looked at the baby.
Then at Richard.
And whispered:
“If I take her, Claire will hate me forever.”
Richard smiled.
“She won't remember.”
Daniel's face broke.
“What about the child?”
Richard answered:
“She'll remember.”
The screen went black.
I felt my knees weaken.
My daughter grabbed me.
“Mom.”
I whispered:
“Victoria…”
My voice shook.
“She's not the woman who stole my family.”
I looked at the screen.
“She was the woman who helped save my daughter.”
Marcus frowned.
“But then why did she pretend otherwise?”
Before I could answer, the archive displayed one final message.
FOURTH SUBJECT STATUS: ACTIVE.
CURRENT IDENTITY: VICTORIA HALE.
I stared.
Victoria wasn't an accomplice.
She wasn't an enemy.
She was the fourth child.
The child everyone thought had disappeared.
My daughter.
My real daughter.
The one I had spent ten years hating.
The one I had believed was trying to destroy my family.
I looked at my children.
Then at Adrian.
Then at the screen.
A terrible realization hit me.
Victoria had spent years pretending to hate me.
Pretending to want my marriage.
Pretending to want my husband.
Pretending to destroy my family.
Because she was trying to stay close enough to protect us.
And now...
She was missing.
I turned toward Marcus.
“We have to find Victoria.”
He stared at me.
“Why?”
I pointed at the screen.
“She has the fourth key.”
Then the archive displayed one final line:
VICTORIA HALE HAS BEEN CAPTURED.
LOCATION: UNKNOWN.
WARNING: MEMORY EXTRACTION IN PROGRESS.
My heart stopped.
Evelyn's voice suddenly echoed through the chamber.
“You're too late.”
The doors slammed shut.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness...
Victoria screamed my name.
