CHAPTER 11: THE WOMAN WHO GAVE BIRTH TO ME

I stared at the photograph until the words blurred.

SHE IS YOUR REAL MOTHER.

My hands began to shake.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

The woman who had delivered my son.

The woman who had known about my daughter.

The woman who had walked into my life tonight carrying ten years of secrets.

My mother.

I looked at Marcus.

“Tell me this is a lie.”

He didn't answer.

I looked at Evelyn.

She stood near the emergency exit, completely still.

Her face had gone white.

“Evelyn.”

She closed her eyes.

I walked toward her.

“Are you my mother?”

She didn't speak.

“Answer me.”

Her lips trembled.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed whatever remained of the world I thought I knew.

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“My mother died when I was six.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“No.”

I stared.

“She wasn't your mother.”

“My father told me she was.”

“Your father lied.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted you hidden.”

“From whom?”

“From Black Meridian.”

I stepped closer.

“You delivered me?”

She nodded.

“And my son?”

“Yes.”

“My daughter?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“This is insane.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You watched me grow up.”

“I watched from a distance.”

“You knew my father.”

“I did.”

“You knew Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Richard.”

“Yes.”

I pointed toward the photograph.

“And you knew all of this.”

She nodded.

“For twenty years.”

My voice broke.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your father made me promise.”

“He's alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

I felt betrayed by every person in the room.

“My entire life was a lie.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not all of it.”

“What part was real?”

She looked at my son.

“Your love for your children.”

That silenced me.

My daughter suddenly stepped closer.

“Are you really Grandma?”

Evelyn looked at her.

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.”

My daughter stared.

Then whispered:

“Why didn't you save me?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I tried.”

“You didn't.”

“I did.”

“Then why was I there for ten years?”

Evelyn couldn't answer.

My daughter turned away.

I understood her anger.

I felt it too.

I picked up the photograph again.

“Why did my father write this?”

“Because he knew you would eventually discover the truth.”

“Then why wait?”

“Because if Black Meridian learned who I was…”

She stopped.

“They would kill you.”

I looked at Marcus.

“And now?”

“They already know.”

The facility alarm continued.

01:12

Marcus checked his weapon.

“We need to leave.”

I nodded.

But before we moved, Evelyn grabbed my arm.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“There is something else.”

“What now?”

She looked at the black box.

“The archive isn't complete.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Your father split it into three parts.”

“The black box?”

“That's one.”

“What are the others?”

She looked at my son.

“The memory.”

Then at my daughter.

“The blood.”

Then she looked at me.

“And the final part…”

She touched my chest.

“…is you.”

I stared at her.

“What did he put inside me?”

“Not information.”

“Then what?”

“An access sequence.”

I felt sick.

“You're saying I'm a key.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does my son matter?”

“Because you can't activate it alone.”

“And my daughter?”

“She can.”

I looked at my daughter.

Evelyn continued:

“Your son carries the memory.”

“Your daughter carries the genetic marker.”

“And you carry the activation sequence.”

My mind raced.

“So the three of us together…”

“Can open the final archive.”

Marcus looked at his watch.

“We're out of time.”

I looked at the emergency exit.

“Where is Black Meridian headquarters?”

Evelyn answered.

“Under the Bennett estate.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The headquarters isn't overseas.”

“Then where?”

“Under your home.”

My blood ran cold.

“The estate?”

She nodded.

“They built the facility beneath it decades ago.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

The basement.

The hidden rooms.

The cameras.

The locked cellar.

The strange transfers.

They had never been hiding inside my home.

They had been underneath it.

I looked at Marcus.

“We need to go back.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that's exactly where they want you.”

“Daniel is there.”

“And probably Richard.”

“My father may be there.”

Marcus sighed.

“I know.”

“And my children need answers.”

He looked at them.

Then at me.

Finally, he nodded.

“Then we go together.”

We escaped through the emergency tunnel.

The tunnel led outside the hospital property.

Black SUVs waited.

Police officers surrounded us.

My daughter climbed into the vehicle.

My son sat beside her.

For the first time, the twins were together.

I sat across from them.

They held hands.

I couldn't stop looking at them.

Ten years.

Two children.

One stolen childhood.

And somehow, both were still standing.

The drive back to the estate was silent.

Until my son spoke.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“I remember Grandpa.”

I turned.

“What do you remember?”

“He told me something.”

“What?”

“He said…”

My son frowned.

“He said if you ever remembered the red room, you had to find the woman with the silver necklace.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She was sitting in the front seat.

She wore a silver necklace.

My heart stopped.

“That's her.”

Evelyn touched the necklace.

She looked frightened.

“What?”

I stared.

“You have the necklace.”

She nodded.

“Your father gave it to me.”

“When?”

“The night you were born.”

I felt a strange chill.

“What is it?”

Evelyn removed it.

The pendant was shaped like a small black circle with three vertical lines.

The Black Meridian symbol.

I stared at it.

“Why would my father give you that?”

“Because it's not a symbol.”

“What is it?”

“A key.”

Marcus immediately turned.

“A key to what?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“The headquarters.”

The SUV suddenly stopped.

Everyone lurched forward.

“What happened?”

Marcus looked outside.

His face changed.

“Roadblock.”

Black vehicles blocked the road.

Armed men stepped out.

Marcus shouted:

“Everyone stay down!”

Gunfire erupted.

Windows shattered.

I pulled both children onto the floor.

Evelyn grabbed the necklace.

“Claire!”

“What?”

“Take this!”

She threw it to me.

I caught it.

Then she pushed open the rear door.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting you out.”

“No!”

Evelyn jumped out.

She raised her hands.

The gunfire stopped.

A man stepped forward.

Richard.

He smiled.

“Dr. Shaw.”

Evelyn stood between him and the SUV.

“Let them go.”

Richard shook his head.

“You know I can't.”

“Then kill me.”

Richard looked at her.

“You've always been dramatic.”

She smiled.

“You've always been afraid.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“Where is the archive?”

Evelyn looked toward the SUV.

Then at me.

Her eyes said something.

I understood.

Run.

I grabbed my children.

“Go!”

We jumped out the opposite side.

Marcus followed.

We ran through the trees.

Bullets struck the ground behind us.

My daughter cried.

My son pulled her along.

“Come on!”

We reached an abandoned farmhouse.

Marcus locked the door.

Everyone was breathing hard.

Then my son looked at me.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Grandpa told me another thing.”

“What?”

He pointed at the silver necklace.

“He said never let Richard see it.”

I stared at the pendant.

“Why?”

My son whispered:

“Because it doesn't open the headquarters.”

He paused.

“It shuts it down.”

My heart pounded.

“Then why did Evelyn give it to me?”

My son looked at the necklace.

“Because she knew what you were going to do.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“You're going to destroy Black Meridian.”

I smiled.

For the first time that night, I wasn't afraid.

I looked toward the distant lights of my estate.

“They took my daughter.”

“They destroyed my marriage.”

“They stole ten years from my children.”

I closed my hand around the pendant.

“And they thought I would come back begging.”

Marcus checked his weapon.

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at him.

“I'm going home.”

My daughter stepped closer.

“We're coming.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

My son interrupted.

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

He pointed toward the necklace.

“It needs all three of us.”

Evelyn's words came back to me.

You. Your son. Your daughter.

The three keys.

The three pieces.

The three people Black Meridian had spent ten years trying to control.

I looked at my children.

Then I looked toward the estate.

“Then tonight…”

I whispered.

“…we take our home back.”

But before we could leave, Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Claire…”

“What?”

“The estate isn't empty.”

My heart stopped.

“Who is there?”

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Your father.”

I froze.

“And he's not alone.”

“Who is with him?”

Marcus stared at me.

“Daniel.”

I couldn't breathe.

Then another voice came through the phone.

Daniel.

Barely audible.

“Claire…”

I grabbed the phone.

“Daniel!”

His voice trembled.

“Don't come here.”

“Where are you?”

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“It's a trap.”

A gunshot exploded through the phone.

The call ended.

My daughter screamed.

My son froze.

And I realized the worst part.

Daniel hadn't told me not to come because he wanted me safe.

He had warned me because someone was standing beside him.

Someone whose voice I recognized.

My father's.

May you like

And he said:

“Bring the children home.”
