Chapter 13 - The Betrayal That Looked Like LoveIsabella stood frozen.

Nathan was gone.

The vault door remained locked.

Victoria was bleeding from her forehead.

Marcus shouted,

“Where did he go?”

Nobody knew.

Isabella stared at the floor.

A hidden panel stood open.

A tunnel.

Nathan had escaped through it.

Victoria looked at her.

“I told you.”

Isabella ignored her.

“No.”

“Isabella.”

“He wouldn't.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You still defend him?”

“He saved me.”

“And betrayed you.”

“He saved our daughter.”

“By handing the ledger to Ethan.”

Isabella looked down.

The ledger was gone.

Her husband was gone.

Her daughter was still a prisoner.

Everything Ethan wanted had fallen into his hands.

Then Marcus found something.

A note.

Under the vault desk.

Isabella opened it.

Four words.

TRUST THE FIRST LIE.

She frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria looked terrified.

“It's your father's code.”

“What code?”

“He used to hide instructions inside contradictory statements.”

Marcus examined the note.

“There are three layers of ink.”

He used a chemical scanner.

Words appeared.

NATHAN NEVER TOOK THE LEDGER.

Isabella stared.

“Then what happened?”

A second layer appeared.

THE PERSON WHO TOOK IT WANTED YOU TO BLAME HIM.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.”

Isabella turned.

“You know something.”

Victoria didn't answer.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“Talk.”

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“I saw Nathan leave.”

“When?”

“Before the lights went out.”

“Then why didn't you say?”

“Because someone told me if I did, they would kill my son.”

Isabella stared.

Victoria's son was twelve.

“They have him?”

Victoria nodded.

“Ethan has him too.”

“So you helped them.”

“I had no choice.”

Isabella looked at her.

“There's always a choice.”

Victoria shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

“I do now.”

Then another hidden message appeared.

THE LEDGER IS A DECOY.

Isabella froze.

Marcus said,

“Your father knew they'd steal it.”

“Then where is the real ledger?”

Isabella remembered her father's journals.

The ledger is the weapon.

The names are more valuable than the money.

She thought about the wedding ring.

The flash drive.

The basement.

Her mother's recording.

Everything had been pointing somewhere.

Not to the ledger.

To something inside the ledger.

She searched the vault shelves.

Behind the fake ledger's compartment was a small metal box.

Inside was a key card.

One word:

BELLWETHER

Marcus frowned.

“What is Bellwether?”

Victoria answered,

“A private intelligence system.”

Isabella looked at her.

“You know it?”

“Eclipse built it.”

“What does it do?”

“It predicts threats.”

“That's impossible.”

“Not when you own hospitals, banks, law firms and surveillance networks.”

Victoria stared at the key card.

“Bellwether knows everything about everyone.”

Isabella's stomach tightened.

“Then it knows where Ava is.”

“Yes.”

They activated the system.

A screen appeared.

Hundreds of profiles.

Names.

Locations.

Financial data.

Medical records.

Then:

SUBJECT: AVA HART

Location:

BLACKWOOD PRIVATE ESTATE

Isabella's breath stopped.

“My daughter.”

Marcus immediately prepared to move.

But another profile appeared.

SUBJECT: ISABELLA HART

Status:

HIGH VALUE

Threat level:

ELIMINATION AUTHORIZED

Isabella stared.

Below it was a command.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED

Two names were listed.

Ethan Hart.

And...

Nathan Blackwood.

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus looked at her.

“He may have authorized your death.”

She couldn't breathe.

Then the system displayed the authorization date.

Tomorrow.

But there was another line beneath it.

SECOND AUTHORIZER PENDING

The second authorization had not been completed.

Isabella stared.

“Who has to approve it?”

The system revealed a name.

VICTORIA BLACKWOOD.

Victoria stepped backward.

“I won't.”

Isabella looked at her.

“You don't have to.”

Victoria stared.

“Why?”

“Because I finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

Isabella pointed to the screen.

“They don't need me dead yet.”

Victoria frowned.

“Then why authorize elimination?”

“Because they expect me to run.”

“But I won't.”

Isabella's eyes hardened.

“I'll walk straight into them.”

Marcus objected.

“No.”

“I have to.”

“You'll be captured.”

“Exactly.”

Victoria stared at her.

“What are you planning?”

Isabella looked toward the security cameras.

Then she smiled for the first time that night.

“They think I'm the victim.”

She picked up the flash drive.

“They've forgotten I'm my father's daughter.”

Later that night, Isabella deliberately entered the estate alone.

Ethan was waiting.

Ava stood beside him.

The girl looked exactly like Isabella.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

Same stubborn chin.

“Mom?”

Isabella's heart broke.

“Yes.”

Ava ran toward her.

Ethan blocked her path.

“First, you answer one question.”

“What?”

“Did Nathan tell you the truth?”

Isabella looked at him.

“No.”

Ethan smiled.

“Good.”

He stepped aside.

“Because your husband was never the man you thought.”

Then Nathan appeared behind him.

Alive.

Uninjured.

Holding a gun.

He pointed it directly at Isabella.

Ava screamed.

“Dad, don't!”

Nathan's eyes met Isabella's.

And whispered:

May you like

“I'm sorry.”

Then he pulled the trigger.
