Chapter 18 - The GraveMy father's grave.

The fake grave.

The place where everyone had cried.

The place where I had said goodbye.

Police opened it under court supervision.

The coffin was empty.

Not completely.

Inside was a metal cylinder.

My father's name engraved on it.

The cylinder contained a storage device.

Encrypted.

Mara worked for hours.

Finally, it opened.

Inside were files my father had hidden eight years earlier.

One video.

One document.

One list.

The video showed Mom meeting Victor.

Then Amanda.

Then Robert.

But the final recording was different.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"Claire, if you're watching this, everything has gone wrong."

He paused.

"The person who started Project Harbor was your mother."

Mom closed her eyes.

"But the person who transformed it into what it became was me."

I stared.

"What?"

Dad continued.

"I realized too late that Victor had connections everywhere."

"So I created a false network."

"Fake companies."

"Fake debts."

"Fake identities."

"I used your name as a shield."

My breath caught.

"You were never supposed to carry the debt."

"You were never supposed to sign."

"Your mother, Amanda, and Robert were supposed to maintain the illusion."

"They failed."

He looked exhausted.

"I disappeared because I believed I could destroy Victor alone."

"I was wrong."

The video ended.

I turned toward Dad.

"You used me."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"All these years."

"Yes."

"I thought you were dead."

"I know."

"You let me mourn you."

"I know."

My voice broke.

"Why?"

"Because if Victor knew you mattered to me, he would have killed you."

I stepped away.

Mom began crying.

Amanda looked down.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But nobody could give me back eight years.

Then Mara interrupted.

"Claire."

She held up the final document.

"This changes everything."

"What?"

She pointed to the signature.

The original transfer agreement.

It wasn't mine.

It wasn't forged.

It belonged to Victor.

He had signed the entire structure himself.

Meaning the companies legally belonged to him.

And the fraud trail attached to him.

The false documents in my name were obvious decoys.

Victor had been trying to make me sign because he needed a legitimate transfer out of his own name.

We didn't need to prove I wasn't guilty.

We only needed the original.

And now we had it.

The police arrested Victor on the spot.

Robert followed.

My uncle too.

Amanda was taken for questioning.

Mom surrendered voluntarily.

Everything collapsed in one afternoon.

But as the officers loaded Victor into the car, he looked at me.

"You think this is over?"

I said nothing.

He smiled.

"Your father never told you the real reason he created Project Harbor."

Then he leaned closer.

"Ask him who funded the first company."

He laughed as the door closed.

I turned toward Dad.

His face had gone pale.

"Who funded it?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at the document.

At the original account.

The source of the first transfer.

It came from an institution I'd never heard of.

Then I saw the account holder.

My name.

Not Claire Carter.

My full legal name.

The account had been opened the year before I was born.

Dad whispered:

"You weren't the target."

"What was I?"

May you like

He looked at me.

"The successor."
