Chapter 14 - The Hotel RoomTuesday night, I gathered everyone I trusted.

Which, after everything, wasn't many.

Mara.

Daniel.

My friend Emily.

And eventually Amanda.

She arrived alone.

No Mom.

No husband.

No children.

She looked exhausted.

"I want out."

"Out of what?"

"Everything."

I stared at her.

"You've been stealing my identity."

"I know."

"You've been lying to me for years."

"I know."

"Why should I trust you now?"

"Because Victor threatened my children too."

That silenced me.

She put a flash drive on the table.

"What's this?"

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"Who ordered the identity theft."

I inserted it.

Folders appeared.

Payments.

Emails.

Encrypted messages.

Then I saw a familiar name.

Not Victor.

Not Robert.

Not Mom.

Someone else.

Someone in our family.

My uncle.

He had worked for my father's company.

He had been the person everyone trusted.

Mara opened the files.

"The money went through him."

Amanda nodded.

"He was the one who introduced Victor to Dad."

I felt dizzy.

"And Robert?"

"Robert became involved later."

"Mom?"

"Mom helped cover the original crime."

"And you?"

"I cleaned the accounts."

I stared at her.

"So everyone helped."

Amanda's eyes filled with tears.

"Except you."

That hurt more than anything.

Because she was right.

For eight years, I had been the only person unaware of the machinery surrounding my life.

Then another folder appeared.

THURSDAY_FINAL.

Inside was a document.

A legal agreement.

It required my signature.

Once signed, ownership of every company would transfer to me.

And liability.

All of it.

The document was dated Thanksgiving morning.

Underneath was an instruction.

After Claire signs, eliminate all original records.

I looked at Amanda.

"They planned to kill me."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"You've known this for years."

"Yes."

"And you let me come?"

"We thought you could survive once you understood."

I stood.

"I almost let my children sleep on a floor because I thought you were my family."

Amanda cried.

"We are."

"No."

I pointed at the flash drive.

"Family doesn't build a prison around someone and call it protection."

She looked down.

"Claire."

I walked away.

Then my phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

"Claire?"

His voice sounded weak.

"I'm sorry."

"Where are you?"

"Not far."

"Can you come alone?"

"No."

"Please."

"Why?"

"Because I finally know who has the list."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I thought your mother had it."

"She doesn't."

"Then who?"

Dad's voice shook.

"You do."

I looked at the metal box.

"Yes."

"No."

"What?"

"The box is a decoy."

I froze.

"The real list was never in your father's house."

"Then where is it?"

Dad whispered:

"Inside the guest room."

I stopped breathing.

The room my mother gave to Amanda.

The room I was supposed to sleep in.

The room they had deliberately taken from me.

The room I had walked away from.

And suddenly I understood.

They hadn't wanted Amanda in the guest room because she had four people.

May you like

They wanted Amanda in the guest room because something was hidden there.

Something my father had expected me to find.
