CHAPTER 15: THE LAST DOOR

Daniel woke to the sound of water dripping.

One drop.

Then another.

Then another.

He opened his eyes.

Darkness.

For several seconds, he couldn't remember where he was.

Then he heard a child's breathing.

“Emily?”

“Daddy?”

Daniel immediately sat up.

His head throbbed.

He reached forward.

His hand found Emily's.

She was beside him.

Alive.

Daniel pulled her close.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“David?”

A weak voice answered from nearby.

“Daddy?”

Daniel turned.

David was lying against a stone wall.

Sarah was beside him.

She looked exhausted, but alive.

Daniel exhaled.

“Thank God.”

Then he noticed someone else.

Thomas.

He was standing several feet away.

His gun was gone.

His face was covered in blood.

But he was smiling.

Daniel stood.

“What happened?”

Thomas looked around.

“We're beneath the house.”

Daniel stared.

“Where?”

“The original chamber.”

Daniel looked at the walls.

There were no photographs.

No machines.

No screens.

Only stone.

Thousands of names had been carved into the walls.

Daniel moved closer.

The first name caught his attention.

ELIAS MORGAN.

Below it:

ANNA MORGAN.

Then:

THOMAS MORGAN.

Then:

ELENA.

Then dozens more.

Daniel touched the wall.

“What is this?”

Thomas answered:

“A cemetery.”

Daniel frowned.

“There are no bodies.”

“That's the point.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“They stored the memories here.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Whose memories?”

“Everyone.”

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Everyone who died?”

Thomas nodded.

“The Morgan family believed death was a temporary condition.”

Daniel looked around.

“They were wrong.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the names.

“They were right.”

A low vibration moved through the floor.

Emily grabbed Daniel's hand.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“The house is listening.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

She pointed at the wall.

One of the names was changing.

Letters rearranged themselves.

Daniel watched in disbelief.

The stone carved a new name.

DANIEL MORGAN.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

STATUS: ALIVE.

Daniel stepped backward.

“What happens when it says dead?”

Thomas answered:

“The memory leaves.”

“Where does it go?”

Thomas looked toward the darkness.

“Into the thing beneath us.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“So that's what it is.”

Thomas nodded.

“Every person who died here became part of it.”

Sarah stared at the walls.

“That's why it sounded like voices.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“And she can hear them.”

Thomas nodded.

“She can hear everyone.”

Emily suddenly looked frightened.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“They're scared.”

“Who?”

“All of them.”

Daniel crouched beside her.

“Why?”

Emily looked toward a huge stone door at the end of the chamber.

“Because it's waking up.”

Daniel stood.

“What is behind that door?”

Thomas whispered:

“The first memory.”

Daniel walked toward it.

Sarah grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“Because once you open it, you can't go back.”

Daniel looked at her.

“We already can't.”

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't want to lose you again.”

“You won't.”

“You don't know that.”

Daniel gently touched her face.

“This time I remember.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Remember what?”

“You.”

Sarah began crying.

Daniel kissed her forehead.

Then he turned toward the door.

Emily followed.

“No.”

Daniel looked down.

“Stay with Mommy.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because she can't open it.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who can?”

Emily pointed at him.

“You.”

Daniel placed his hand against the stone.

The door immediately began glowing.

A voice came from inside.

His mother's voice.

Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

“Mom.”

Open the door.

Daniel pushed.

The door moved.

Slowly.

Stone scraped against stone.

A blast of freezing air rushed out.

Inside was a room.

Small.

Almost empty.

There was only one chair.

One table.

And one mirror.

Daniel stepped inside.

His reflection appeared.

But it wasn't his reflection.

It was a little boy.

Three years old.

Standing in the same room.

Daniel stared.

The child looked frightened.

“That's me.”

Elena's voice whispered:

Yes.

The little boy looked directly at Daniel.

Then spoke.

“I remember you.”

Daniel froze.

The child's voice was his own.

“You were there.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where?”

“When Mom died.”

Daniel's chest tightened.

“I didn't kill her.”

The child shook his head.

“You did.”

Daniel froze.

“But Elias controlled me.”

The child shook his head again.

“No.”

“What?”

“You chose.”

Daniel stared.

“I was three days old.”

“You weren't.”

Daniel's breath stopped.

The child smiled.

“You were twenty.”

Daniel felt dizzy.

“What?”

“You were already grown.”

The room changed.

The walls disappeared.

Daniel suddenly saw the truth.

He wasn't remembering a baby.

He was remembering himself at twenty years old.

Standing over Elena.

Holding the syringe.

But this time he could see what happened before.

Elias had been inside him.

But Daniel had invited him.

Daniel watched himself make a choice.

He had agreed to the transfer.

Because Elias promised him something.

Sarah.

A life with her.

Daniel whispered:

“I chose.”

The child nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I betrayed my mother.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because you didn't know.”

“Know what?”

The child pointed toward the mirror.

Daniel looked.

The reflection changed.

He saw Elena.

She was standing beside him.

Alive.

She looked exactly as he remembered.

Daniel's breath caught.

“Mom.”

She smiled.

“My son.”

Daniel reached toward the mirror.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I was.”

“Then how are you here?”

“I am a memory.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You're more than that.”

Elena smiled.

“I am whatever you need me to be.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Why did you leave me?”

“Because I had to hide you.”

“From Elias?”

“From yourself.”

Daniel frowned.

“I don't understand.”

“You were stronger than Elias.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“You were never his vessel.”

“Then what was I?”

“My son.”

“That can't be enough.”

“It was.”

Elena touched the mirror.

“You were the only person who could destroy the memory system.”

Daniel stared.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you had to choose it.”

“What?”

“Freedom.”

Elena looked toward the door.

“The Morgans spent generations trying to defeat death.”

“And?”

“They became prisoners of memory.”

Daniel understood.

“They couldn't die.”

“No.”

“They couldn't forget.”

“No.”

“They couldn't move on.”

Elena nodded.

“That is why this house exists.”

Daniel looked at the walls.

“So how do I end it?”

Elena smiled sadly.

“You already know.”

Daniel looked at the mirror.

“I have to destroy the memories.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“You have to let them go.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

“Stop remembering.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“But if I stop remembering, I'll forget you.”

“Yes.”

“I'll forget Sarah.”

“Yes.”

“Emily.”

“Yes.”

“David.”

“Yes.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I can't.”

Elena smiled.

“That is why you're the only one who can.”

Daniel looked toward the door.

Emily was standing there.

She was crying.

“Daddy?”

Daniel walked toward her.

She hugged him.

“I don't want you to forget me.”

Daniel held her tightly.

“I won't.”

“You said you remembered.”

“I do.”

“Then why are you crying?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because remembering isn't the same as living.”

Emily didn't understand.

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“I love you.”

She smiled.

“I love you too.”

Daniel stood.

He looked at Sarah.

She was crying.

“Don't do this.”

Daniel walked toward her.

“What if I forget you?”

“You will.”

“Then I'll find you again.”

Sarah shook her head.

“How?”

Daniel smiled.

“I'll choose you.”

Sarah broke down.

Daniel held her.

Then he looked at David.

His son was awake.

“Daddy?”

Daniel knelt.

“I love you.”

David hugged him.

“I love you too.”

Daniel stood.

Thomas watched silently.

Daniel looked at him.

“What happens to you?”

Thomas smiled.

“I've been waiting a long time.”

“For what?”

“To die.”

Daniel understood.

“You're free too.”

Thomas nodded.

Daniel turned toward the door.

The voices began screaming.

Thousands of people.

Thousands of memories.

Everyone who had been trapped beneath the house.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he spoke.

“You can go.”

The chamber went silent.

The walls began cracking.

Names disappeared.

One by one.

Elias.

Anna.

Thomas.

Elena.

Sarah.

Daniel.

Every name.

Every memory.

Every life.

The creature beneath the house began screaming.

The sound shook the earth.

Daniel held Emily's hand.

“Run.”

They ran.

Sarah grabbed David.

Thomas followed.

Behind them, the chamber collapsed.

The house shook.

Windows shattered.

Walls cracked.

The entire Morgan estate began sinking into the earth.

Daniel reached the front door.

They escaped into the storm.

Behind them, the house collapsed completely.

Silence.

Rain fell over the ruins.

Daniel stood there.

Breathing.

Alive.

Emily held his hand.

Sarah held David.

Thomas stood several feet away.

Then Thomas smiled.

His body began fading.

Daniel stared.

“Thomas?”

The older man looked at him.

“You finally chose them.”

Daniel nodded.

Thomas smiled.

“Good.”

Then he disappeared.

Not violently.

Not painfully.

Just...

gone.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She walked toward him.

“Do you remember me?”

Daniel stared at her.

A strange sadness filled his chest.

“I don't know.”

Sarah froze.

Daniel touched her hand.

“But I know I love you.”

She smiled through tears.

“That might be enough.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

Something about her felt familiar.

But he couldn't remember why.

She hugged him.

He held her.

Then a strange voice whispered inside his head.

Not Elena.

Not Elias.

Not Evelyn.

His own.

There is still one memory left.

Daniel froze.

He looked toward the ruins.

Sarah noticed.

“What is it?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Because beneath the collapsed house...

one light had appeared.

A tiny red light.

Blinking.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Emily suddenly whispered:

“Daddy.”

Daniel looked down.

“What?”

She pointed toward the ruins.

“Someone is knocking.”

Daniel listened.

At first, nothing.

Then:

BANG.

Daniel's face went pale.

Another.

BANG.

Sarah grabbed his arm.

“What is that?”

Daniel stared at the collapsed house.

Then came a third.

BANG.

A voice followed.

A woman's voice.

Clear.

Calm.

Alive.

“Daniel.”

He knew that voice.

He had heard it before.

But she was supposed to be dead.

Daniel whispered:

“Evelyn.”

The ruins shifted.

A hand emerged from beneath the stones.

Then another.

And finally, a woman pulled herself from the darkness.

Evelyn Morgan stood beneath the rain.

Blood covered her face.

She smiled.

“You thought it was over.”

Daniel stared.

Evelyn looked at Emily.

Then at Sarah.

Then back at Daniel.

“No.”

Her smile widened.

“This was only the first door.”

Behind her, deep beneath the ruined house...

another door slowly opened.
