CHAPTER 14: THE LAST MEMORY

The screaming did not stop.
Hundreds of voices filled the chamber.
Some cried Daniel's name.
Some screamed for help.
Some begged him to remember.
And some were laughing.
Daniel stood completely still.
Emily was in front of him.
Her eyes were no longer black.
They were brown again.
But Daniel knew something was wrong.
“Emily?”
She smiled.
“Daddy.”
Her voice sounded normal.
Almost.
Daniel slowly approached.
“Are you still my daughter?”
Emily nodded.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
She looked confused.
“Why wouldn't I be?”
Daniel glanced at Thomas.
Thomas was still holding the gun.
“Don't shoot.”
Thomas didn't lower it.
“If that's Elias…”
“It isn't.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she called me Daddy.”
Thomas stared at Emily.
“That proves nothing.”
Emily suddenly turned toward him.
“You killed my grandmother.”
Thomas froze.
Daniel's eyes widened.
“What?”
Emily continued.
“You killed Elena.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
“You remember.”
“I never killed her.”
“You did.”
Thomas's face went pale.
“I tried to save her.”
Emily smiled.
“You remember the gun.”
Thomas lowered the weapon.
Daniel stared at him.
“What gun?”
Thomas couldn't answer.
Emily walked closer.
“You shot her.”
Thomas's hands began shaking.
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
“No.”
“You were afraid she would tell Daniel.”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“What did she know?”
Emily whispered:
“That you were not his father.”
Daniel froze.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Silence.
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“Is that true?”
Thomas finally opened his eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“You weren't my father.”
“No.”
“Who was?”
Thomas looked toward Elias's body.
Daniel followed his gaze.
Elias was lying motionless on the floor.
Thomas whispered:
“Him.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“No.”
“You were born from his blood.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“That thing is my father?”
“Biologically.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't believe you.”
“You shouldn't.”
Thomas looked at Emily.
“Because he wasn't your only father.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas pointed toward the walls.
“Your body came from Elias.”
He pointed toward Daniel.
“But your mind came from Elena.”
Daniel stared.
“My mind?”
Thomas nodded.
“Elena transferred her memories into you before she died.”
Daniel felt a strange pressure behind his eyes.
“She knew she was going to die.”
“Yes.”
“So she put herself inside me.”
“Yes.”
“That means…”
Thomas nodded.
“Part of your mother has been inside you your entire life.”
Daniel touched his chest.
A strange warmth spread through him.
He suddenly heard a woman's voice.
Not Emily.
Not Sarah.
Not Evelyn.
A voice he had never heard while awake.
Daniel.
He froze.
“Mom?”
The room went silent.
Sarah stared at him.
“What?”
Daniel looked around.
“I heard her.”
Thomas whispered:
“Elena.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The voice came again.
You finally remembered.
Tears filled Daniel's eyes.
“Mom?”
I am sorry.
Daniel's breath trembled.
“Why?”
Because I left you alone.
“You didn't.”
I did.
“No.”
I couldn't protect you.
Daniel clenched his fists.
“Who killed you?”
Silence.
Then:
I did.
Daniel's eyes opened.
“What?”
Thomas stared.
“No.”
Daniel heard Elena again.
I chose to die.
“Why?”
Because Elias had already entered you.
Daniel's blood ran cold.
If I survived, he would have taken your body.
Daniel looked at Elias.
“So you sacrificed yourself.”
Yes.
“Then why did everyone say I killed you?”
Because I needed you to believe it.
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
Because guilt was the only thing that could hide me from Elias.
Daniel's heart raced.
“You hid inside my guilt.”
Yes.
“So all those memories…”
Were mine.
Daniel began crying.
His mother's voice softened.
I have been watching you your entire life.
Daniel covered his mouth.
“I thought I was alone.”
You never were.
Emily suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Daddy.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
Emily was crying.
“She says she's sorry.”
Daniel stared.
“You can hear her?”
Emily nodded.
“She is inside me too.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Emily touched her chest.
“She moved.”
“Who?”
“Grandma Elena.”
Daniel looked at Thomas.
Then at Emily.
Then at the walls.
Everything was connected.
The memories.
The children.
The copies.
The deaths.
The resets.
And suddenly Daniel understood the one thing Evelyn had been afraid of.
Not Emily's ability to remember.
But the combination.
Daniel and Emily.
Father and daughter.
Two memory carriers.
One original consciousness.
Evelyn had spent decades trying to create it.
But she had accidentally created something she couldn't control.
A complete human memory.
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
“Evelyn!”
No answer.
“EVELYN!”
Her voice came from somewhere above.
“You finally understand.”
Daniel looked up.
“Come down here.”
“No.”
“Why are you afraid?”
“Because you're no longer alone.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“You've been afraid of me all along.”
“No.”
She paused.
“I was afraid of her.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Why?”
“Because she carries the original.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“The original what?”
“The original memory.”
“What memory?”
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“The memory of the first death.”
Daniel looked toward Thomas.
“What first death?”
Thomas shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Evelyn answered:
“The death that created the Morgans.”
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
“What died?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Humanity.”
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“The first experiment wasn't about immortality.”
“Then what was it?”
“Survival.”
“From what?”
Evelyn's voice became faint.
“From the thing that came before us.”
Daniel looked at Elias's body.
“You mean him?”
“No.”
“What then?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Something older.”
The chamber suddenly shook.
The floor cracked again.
This time, the crack spread beneath Emily.
Daniel grabbed her.
“Move!”
He pulled her backward.
A dark shape rose from beneath the floor.
Not a person.
Not a machine.
Something enormous.
Something that had been buried beneath the house for generations.
Thomas raised his gun.
“What is that?”
Evelyn screamed:
“RUN!”
The walls began collapsing.
Daniel grabbed David.
Sarah grabbed Emily.
Thomas fired.
The bullets disappeared into the darkness.
The creature continued rising.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“What does it want?”
Emily stared at the thing.
Her face went pale.
Then she whispered:
“It wants me.”
Daniel held her tighter.
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“No, Daddy.”
“What?”
She looked at him.
“It doesn't want me.”
“Then what?”
“It wants you.”
Daniel froze.
The creature stopped moving.
Its head slowly turned toward him.
Daniel felt something enter his mind.
A thousand memories exploded at once.
His birth.
Elena's death.
Sarah's first death.
Emily's birth.
David's birth.
Every Daniel.
Every Evelyn.
Every reset.
Every lie.
Then one final memory.
A room.
Empty.
White.
A table.
A newborn baby.
Daniel.
And someone standing beside him.
Not Elias.
Not Evelyn.
Not Thomas.
A woman.
Daniel couldn't see her face.
But he heard her whisper:
“Remember the promise.”
The baby opened his eyes.
And the woman smiled.
Daniel suddenly understood.
He hadn't been created to become Evelyn.
He hadn't been created to become Elias.
He hadn't even been created to carry memories.
He had been created to destroy them.
The woman had built him as a weapon.
A weapon against the Morgan family.
Daniel opened his eyes.
The creature stopped.
The house went silent.
Evelyn screamed from upstairs:
“DON'T REMEMBER!”
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then at Sarah.
Then at David.
And finally at the creature.
“I remember.”
The creature recoiled.
Thomas stared.
“What did you remember?”
Daniel's voice was calm.
“The reason this house was built.”
Thomas whispered:
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward the walls.
“To keep something inside.”
The creature suddenly screamed.
Every window in the house shattered.
Evelyn screamed again.
“DANIEL, DON'T!”
Daniel looked up.
“Why?”
Evelyn's voice broke.
“Because if you destroy the memories…”
A pause.
“…the thing beneath the house will be free.”
Daniel stared at the creature.
Then at Emily.
His daughter was crying.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“Don't destroy them.”
“Why?”
She pointed toward the darkness.
“Because they're not memories.”
Daniel froze.
“What are they?”
Emily whispered:
“They're people.”
The creature moved.
The floor disappeared.
Daniel, Emily, Sarah, David, and Thomas fell into darkness.
And as they dropped...
Daniel heard Elena's final whisper.
May you like
“Now you know why I had to die.”
Then everything went black.
