Chapter 2: The Web of Lies

The wedding was postponed indefinitely.

By morning, the Hart estate transformed into something resembling a courtroom.

Independent investigators arrived.

Financial experts reviewed decades of transactions.

What they uncovered shocked everyone.

Millions of dollars had disappeared from Margaret Hart's accounts.

Properties had quietly been transferred.

Charitable foundations had been emptied.

Every trail led to Victor Crane.

"You manipulated a grieving mother," Evelyn said during the family hearing.

Victor slammed his hand against the table.

"You have no idea what this family is really like!"

"No," Evelyn answered softly. "I know exactly what pain this family caused. I grew up watching my mother work three jobs while hiding letters from the man she loved because she didn't want me to hate people I'd never met."

Margaret finally spoke.

"I destroyed my own son's happiness because of pride."

She turned toward Evelyn.

"Can you ever forgive me?"

Evelyn remembered nights without electricity.

Birthdays with homemade cakes.

Watching her mother cry quietly after reading old letters.

Forgiveness did not come easily.

But hatred had already stolen too many years.

"I don't know if I can forgive everything," Evelyn admitted. "But I don't want revenge."

Victor attempted one final escape.

However, investigators presented undeniable evidence of fraud and embezzlement.

The once-powerful lawyer was escorted away in handcuffs while reporters documented his downfall.

As he passed Evelyn, he hissed, "You ruined everything."

Evelyn looked at him without anger.

"No," she replied. "You did that yourself."

Outside the estate, rain began to fall.

Inside, for the first time in decades, the Hart family spoke honestly.
