Chapter 1 - THE VOICE INSIDE THE WALLElena had worked for the wealthy Vance family for nearly three years.

She knew the mansion better than anyone.

She knew which staircase creaked after midnight, which windows rattled whenever the wind came from the east, and which doors were always locked no matter how much dust gathered around their handles.

She knew Arthur Vance's habits.

She knew his late-night coffee.

She knew the sound of his shoes crossing the marble floor when he was angry.

She even knew the difference between the silence of an empty room and the silence of a room where someone was hiding.

That afternoon, however, the entire mansion felt wrong.

Seven-year-old Leo Vance had been missing for six hours.

Police officers had searched the gardens.

They had checked the guesthouse, the garage, the lake, the surrounding road and every room inside the mansion.

Nothing.

No footprints.

No ransom note.

No broken window.

No sign of forced entry.

Arthur Vance had been locked inside his study for almost an hour, refusing food or water.

His voice had become hoarse from repeating the same sentence to police.

“Find my son.”

Victoria, Arthur's new wife, stood near the grand staircase.

She looked strangely calm.

Too calm.

Elena noticed it because everyone else was falling apart.

Victoria wasn't crying.

She wasn't shaking.

She wasn't even asking questions.

She was simply watching.

Watching the police.

Watching Arthur.

Watching Elena.

Then Elena heard something.

Scratch.

She stopped pushing the mop.

Scratch.

Her eyes moved toward the wall beneath an old American flag painting.

It was a strange place for a sound.

There was no vent there.

No plumbing.

No electrical panel.

She waited.

Scratch.

Elena slowly walked closer.

The sound came again.

Scratch.

She pressed her palm against the wall.

Cold plaster.

Nothing.

Then she pressed her ear against it.

At first, she heard only her own breathing.

Then came a whisper.

“Help me…”

Elena's blood turned cold.

She pulled away.

“Leo?”

Silence.

She leaned against the wall again.

A child's voice answered.

“It's dark.”

Elena's heart began pounding.

“Leo, is that you?”

“I want my dad.”

She spun around.

“Someone call the police!”

But then she remembered.

The officers were outside in the garden.

Arthur was in the study.

Victoria was at the staircase.

No one was coming fast enough.

Elena looked at the wall.

Then at the heavy hammer sitting in the utility closet.

She ran.

Seconds later, she returned carrying a sledgehammer.

Victoria stepped forward.

“What are you doing?”

Elena ignored her.

The whisper came again.

“Please…”

Elena raised the hammer.

CRASH!

The plaster shattered.

Dust exploded across the hallway.

Arthur stormed out of his study.

“Elena! What are you doing to my house?”

“I heard your son!”

Arthur froze.

“My son?”

“He's behind this wall!”

Arthur's face drained of color.

Then came a muffled cry from inside.

“Dad!”

Arthur rushed forward.

“Leo!”

But Victoria suddenly screamed.

“Arthur, stop her!”

Elena turned.

“Stay back!”

Arthur looked at Victoria.

There was something in her face.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not fear for Leo.

Fear of what Elena might uncover.

“Victoria,” Arthur said slowly, “how did you know there was something behind that wall?”

Victoria's lips parted.

“I didn't.”

“You told me to stop her before you even saw inside.”

“I was scared!”

Arthur stared at her.

Then another voice came from behind the broken plaster.

“Dad…”

Arthur dropped to his knees.

He reached into the opening.

“Leo! I'm here!”

A tiny hand appeared through the darkness.

Arthur grabbed it.

Elena helped widen the hole.

Finally, Leo crawled through.

His clothes were covered in dust.

His cheeks were wet with tears.

Arthur pulled him into his arms.

“You're safe.”

Leo clung to him.

But then he whispered something that made Arthur go rigid.

“She put me here.”

Arthur slowly looked toward Victoria.

“You trapped my son inside a wall?”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

Leo buried his face against his father.

“It was her.”

Arthur stood.

Victoria stepped backward.

“She said nobody would find me.”

Arthur's voice became dangerously quiet.

“You did this for money?”

“It was supposed to secure our future!”

Arthur pointed toward the front door.

“Get out of my house before I call the police.”

Victoria didn't move.

Because Elena was still staring into the broken wall.

The flashlight beam from one of the officers revealed a narrow cavity running much deeper than expected.

There were scratches along the interior.

A small blanket.

An empty water bottle.

And something else.

A metal box.

Half hidden behind a wooden beam.

Elena stared at it.

Victoria noticed.

For the first time, all the color disappeared from her face.

“Don't touch that,” Victoria whispered.

Arthur turned.

“What is it?”

Victoria said nothing.

Elena reached toward the box.

And from somewhere deeper inside the wall came another sound.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Then a second child's voice whispered:

“Please… don't let her find me.”

May you like

Elena slowly looked up.

Leo wasn't the only one trapped.
