Chapter 2 - The Door Behind the WallDante had faced men who could empty a room with a single threat.

He had watched seasoned killers lose their nerve when they realized they were trapped.
But he had never felt anything quite like the cold fury that settled inside him when he heard someone whispering about a child through his own wall.
He raised one hand, ordering silence.
Sophie held Bruno's collar with both hands. The dog's body had become rigid, his eyes fixed on the wardrobe.
Another sound followed.
A soft dragging noise.
Then nothing.
Dante stepped toward the wall.
“Get behind me, Sophie.”
She obeyed, pulling Bruno with her. The dog refused to move until Dante repeated the command in a low voice. Only then did Bruno retreat half a step, keeping his body between the girl and the wardrobe.
Dante drew his pistol.
He examined the wardrobe again, this time looking for anything that didn't belong. The rear panel was covered with scratches, but most were old. Near the bottom, however, he found a small brass screw with a freshly disturbed head.
Someone had removed it recently.
He pressed the wood beside the screw.
Nothing happened.
He pressed harder.
A small section of the panel shifted inward.
Dante stopped.
The wardrobe wasn't standing against a solid wall.
It was concealing a hidden entrance.
He motioned for Sophie to remain where she was. Then he placed his hand against the panel and pushed.
A narrow section of wood swung open with a quiet creak.
Beyond it lay darkness.
The passage was barely wide enough for a man to turn around. Old bricks lined the walls, and a single electrical cable disappeared into the ceiling. The air smelled of damp earth, dust, and cigarette smoke.
Dante stared into the opening.
He had owned the estate for eleven years. The property had undergone two renovations, an expansion, and a complete security overhaul after an attempted attack on his family.
Nobody had mentioned a passage behind the servants' rooms.
He stepped inside.
His shoes landed on a thin layer of dust disturbed by recent footprints. One set led deeper into the corridor. Another came back toward Sophie's bedroom.
Someone had been using the passage repeatedly.
Dante crouched beside the footprints.
The shoes were large, with a distinctive pattern on the soles. Near the wall lay the end of a cigarette, crushed under a heel.
Then he noticed a small strip of blue fabric caught on a protruding brick.
He pulled it free.
It was the same shade of blue as the blanket covering Sophie's bed.
His jaw tightened.
Behind him, Sophie spoke softly.
“That's where he goes.”
Dante turned.
She stood in the doorway, clutching the star pillow. Bruno pressed against her leg.
“You've seen someone in here?”
Sophie nodded.
“Not his face. Just his shoes.”
“How many times?”
She thought carefully.
“Lots.”
Dante felt the air leave his lungs slowly.
“Why didn't you tell your mother?”
“I did.”
“What did she say?”
“She said I was dreaming.”
The words landed harder than they should have.
He looked at the little girl. She wasn't crying. She wasn't demanding attention. She had simply learned that adults didn't always believe her.
“How long have you been hearing the knocking?”
Sophie pressed her lips together.
“Since the man came to fix the lights.”
“When was that?”
“Before my birthday.”
Dante's expression sharpened.
Sophie's birthday had been two months earlier.
Two months of someone moving through a secret passage beside her bedroom.
Two months during which his security team had reported nothing unusual.
A sharp sound echoed from deeper inside the passage.
Dante raised his pistol and moved forward.
“Stay there.”
But Sophie took one step after him.
“Mr. Dante?”
He turned sharply.
“Don't move.”
She froze.
For the first time, real fear crossed his face. Not fear of the intruder.
Fear of what might happen if he failed to keep this child safe.
He closed the hidden panel and pushed the wardrobe back into place.
Then he called Rossi.
“Bring two men to the servants' wing. Armed. No sirens, no noise.”
“Understood.”
“And get me every renovation record from the last fifteen years. I want the original architectural plans, every contractor, every maintenance order. Everything.”
“Yes, boss.”
Dante ended the call.
“Can I go with Bruno to your room?” Sophie asked.
“Yes.”
“Will you come too?”
The question caught him off guard.
“I have work to do.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Okay.”
She said it without complaint.
That somehow made it worse.
Dante glanced at the untouched star pillow in her hands.
“Tell you what. I'll have a guard outside your door tonight. Nobody will enter without my permission.”
Sophie considered this.
“Will the guard hear the knocks?”
“He'd better.”
A tiny smile appeared on her face.
“Then maybe I'll sleep.”
Dante walked her back to bed. Bruno circled once before lying across the doorway, his massive head resting on his paws.
Sophie climbed beneath the blanket.
“Mr. Dante?”
“Yes?”
“Don't tell the man I told you.”
Dante felt his blood turn cold.
“Why?”
She looked toward the wardrobe.
“Because last time, he got angry.”
Dante leaned closer.
“What did he do?”
“He broke my blue cup.”
Her voice grew smaller.
“Then he told me that little girls who talk too much sometimes lose things they love.”
For one terrible moment, Dante couldn't speak.
A five-year-old had been threatened inside his home, and the man responsible had apparently been doing it long enough for her to think silence was her safest option.
Dante gently tucked the blanket around her shoulders.
“You don't have to protect him from me.”
Sophie didn't answer.
Her eyelids were already growing heavy, Bruno's breathing steady beside her bed.
Dante stood and stepped into the corridor.
Two armed guards arrived at a run, followed by Rossi.
Dante pointed to the wardrobe.
“Open it.”
The guards pulled the furniture away from the wall and exposed the hidden panel.
One of them slipped inside with a flashlight.
He returned less than a minute later, pale beneath his olive skin.
“Boss.”
“What?”
The man held out a small object.
A black plastic camera.
Its red recording light had been switched off.
“It was attached to a bracket inside the passage,” the guard said. “It's facing directly into the child's bedroom.”
Dante stared at the camera.
Someone hadn't merely been hiding in the walls.
Someone had been watching Sophie sleep.
Then Rossi's radio crackled.
A voice came through, breathless and confused.
“Security room to Rossi. We have a problem.”
Rossi lifted the radio.
“What problem?”
“Someone accessed the internal surveillance system ten minutes ago.”
“Who?”
The answer came after a short pause.
“The system says the access code belonged to Dante Moretti.”
Every guard in the corridor went still.
Dante slowly turned toward Rossi.
His own security code had opened the surveillance room.
His own credentials had disabled the camera coverage.
And someone had been walking through a secret passage to watch the daughter of his housekeeper.
Dante slipped the pistol back beneath his jacket.
“Seal the estate,” he ordered. “Nobody goes home tonight.”
May you like
He looked at the camera again.
“Especially not the person who thinks he's me.”
