Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN THE MIRRORGabriel fired.
The bullet hit the steel frame.
The corridor outside was empty.
He grabbed Chloe and pulled her behind him.
Beatrice stood frozen.
“Ma, stay down.”
A second shot came from somewhere above.
Glass shattered.
Gabriel dragged both women deeper into the room.
“There's another exit.”
He pushed a bookshelf.
It moved.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Chloe followed Beatrice inside.
They emerged into another corridor.
Gabriel locked the hidden entrance behind them.
“Who's attacking us?”
“I don't know.”
“You're Gabriel Costello. You always know.”
He looked at her.
“Not tonight.”
Then a phone began ringing.
Not Gabriel's.
Chloe's.
She stared at the screen.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“Leo told you the truth.”
Chloe froze.
“Who are you?”
“You need to leave Gabriel.”
“Why?”
“Because he has already chosen who dies.”
The line went dead.
Gabriel took the phone.
“Who was that?”
“I don't know.”
Beatrice suddenly pulled Chloe toward a mirror.
She pointed at it.
Chloe frowned.
“What?”
Beatrice tapped the glass.
Then signed:
Behind.
Chloe turned.
Nobody.
Gabriel looked at Beatrice.
“What are you seeing?”
Beatrice pointed at the mirror again.
Gabriel stepped closer.
There was a faint fingerprint on the glass.
From the other side.
The mirror shifted.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a woman.
Alive.
Weak.
Terrified.
Chloe stared.
The woman looked directly at Gabriel.
“Your father told me you would never find me.”
Gabriel's face went white.
“Who are you?”
She stepped into the light.
Beatrice gasped.
Her hands trembled.
Chloe looked at her.
“Who?”
Beatrice signed one word.
Lena.
Gabriel's eyes widened.
“Lena died fifteen years ago.”
The woman shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed at Chloe.
“Your mother did.”
Chloe stopped breathing.
“My mother?”
Lena nodded.
“Your mother wasn't killed in an accident.”
Gabriel looked at Chloe.
May you like
Lena whispered:
“She was murdered.”
