Chapter 9 - The Child They Were Fighting OverSophia knew more than anyone realized

Lucia held Sophia like she was terrified the child might disappear again.
Dante couldn't stop staring at them.
For three days, he'd believed his daughter had been abandoned.
Now the woman he loved was standing in front of him.
Alive.
But something was wrong.
Lucia looked frightened.
Not relieved.
Frightened.
"Why did you come back?"
Dante asked.
Lucia looked at him.
"Because they found her."
"Who?"
"The people who took me."
"You escaped."
"No."
She shook her head.
"They let me go."
That sentence changed everything.
Dante's face hardened.
"Why?"
"Because they wanted me to lead them to Sophia."
Silence.
I looked at the little girl.
She was hugging her father now.
"What does Sophia have?"
Lucia looked at me.
"Everything."
She explained.
When Sophia was born, Dante's father had discovered the ledger contained more than payments.
It contained inheritance records.
Ownership structures.
Secret identities.
Hidden accounts.
And one final document.
A succession clause.
A clause stating that if the Russo bloodline was ever compromised, all protected assets would transfer to the youngest direct heir.
Sophia.
"She's the legal owner?"
Dante asked.
Lucia nodded.
"Of what?"
"Everything."
Dante stared at his daughter.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does if someone planned for the family to fall."
Then Lucia said the part that scared me most.
"Someone has already tried to kill Sophia twice."
Dante's face turned cold.
"Who?"
"We don't know."
I thought of the photograph in the apartment.
The shoe.
The basement.
Someone had access to everything.
Then Sophia tugged my sleeve.
"Elina."
I knelt.
"What?"
She pointed at my necklace.
"Mommy said never let them take it."
I looked at Lucia.
She nodded.
"The necklace contains the final key."
My fingers tightened around the pendant.
"Key to what?"
"A vault."
"Where?"
"Under Bellanote."
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
Lucia looked at Dante.
"You have to destroy it."
"Why?"
"Because whoever opens that vault can control the entire Russo organization."
Dante stood.
"I'll destroy it tonight."
"No."
Lucia grabbed his arm.
"That's what they want."
"Who?"
She looked toward the darkness.
"The person who replaced Victor."
Everyone went quiet.
Matteo stepped forward.
"Victor wasn't the mastermind."
Dante looked at him.
"Then who was?"
Matteo pulled out another photograph.
A family dinner.
Dante.
Matteo.
Their father.
Victor.
Lucia.
And a woman I didn't recognize.
I stared.
"Who is she?"
Lucia whispered:
"My aunt."
I looked at her.
"She's been dead for twenty years."
"That's what everyone believes."
Then Lucia pointed at the photograph.
"Look at the man standing behind her."
I did.
A young man in a suit.
I didn't recognize him.
Then Dante did.
His expression collapsed.
"That's impossible."
"Who?"
Dante couldn't answer.
Matteo did.
"Tony."
My heart stopped.
Tony had been in that photograph.
Twenty years younger.
Standing beside Dante's father.
Watching.
Waiting.
And suddenly the entire story changed.
May you like
Tony wasn't an employee.
He had been there from the beginning.
